Chapter 1: Home coming
The snowflakes drifted lazily from the sky, settling on the narrow streets of Ashford, a small town nestled near the snowy mountains. Hana Malik’s boots crunched against the fresh layer of snow as she walked down the familiar cobblestone path, her breath a cloud in the chilly winter air. The town had barely changed in the five years since she left, and yet, everything felt different now. She wasn’t the same person who had hurried away to find excitement and new horizons. She was different—wiser, more guarded, and, above all, broken. Her heart still ached from the divorce. The life she had once dreamed of had unraveled too quickly, too painfully, leaving her with only memories of a love that was supposed to last forever. It was supposed to be her happy ending, but like so many others, it turned into a painful chapter she had to leave behind. But that was over now. Hana had come back to Ashford for a reason—she needed peace. A quiet Christmas with her daughter, Emma, away from the hustle and the noise of the world. She didn’t want any distractions. She didn’t want anything that could remind her of what she had lost. “Hana!” Emma’s voice called out from the porch as Hana approached the front door of her childhood home. The eight-year-old stood, bundled in a puffy coat and scarf, her eyes bright with excitement. Hana’s heart swelled with love for her daughter, the one person who had kept her grounded during the past few turbulent months. “Ready for Christmas, sweetie?” Hana smiled, kneeling down to embrace her daughter. “Can we build a snowman? And maybe bake cookies for Santa?” Emma asked eagerly, her eyes sparkling with the kind of innocent joy that only a child could possess. “We’ll do all of that and more,” Hana promised, standing back up and brushing the snow off her coat. But before she could open the door, she heard footsteps crunching behind her. Turning around, she found herself face to face with a figure she hadn’t expected to see in Ashford—a man who had once been so important to her. “Rayyan,” she whispered, feeling her pulse quicken. Rayyan Adeel stood in front of her, looking every bit as striking as he had all those years ago. His tall, athletic frame was draped in a sleek winter coat, his dark hair tousled in a way that seemed effortless, and his piercing green eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. It had been over a decade since they last spoke, and yet, here he was, standing in her childhood town as if nothing had changed. But of course, everything had changed. “Hana,” Rayyan said, his voice low and smooth, just like she remembered. “I didn’t expect to see you here.” “I didn’t expect to see you either,” Hana replied, trying to mask the surprise in her voice. The last time she’d heard of Rayyan, he was off at university, then managing the family business. He’d always been destined for great things. A legacy that had been handed to him. The rich heir to a legacy. But she never imagined he would return to Ashford, and especially not this time of year. Rayyan’s eyes softened as they lingered on her. “It’s been a long time. I’m glad you’re back.” Hana forced a smile, her heart a tangled mess of emotions. She had no idea why he was here, but she knew this town, and her past, were full of ghosts. And Rayyan—he was one of them.
