Chapter Eighteen

The next morning arrived with a low hum of activity across the pack lands. Warriors from all four allied packs were already awake, moving through warm‑ups, patrol rotations, and strategy briefings. The air felt charged — not chaotic, but purposeful. Focused. Ready. I stepped out onto the balcony outside my room, letting the cool breeze brush across my face. Selena stretched inside me, alert but calm. Today feels important, she murmured. I didn’t know what she meant, but I trusted her instincts. They had never failed me. A soft knock sounded behind me. “Come in,” I called. Kayden stepped through the doorway, his expression warm but serious. “Morning, princess.” “Morning,” I said, turning to face him. “You’re up early.” He shrugged lightly. “Couldn’t sleep. Too much on my mind.” I walked toward him. “About the war?” “About everything,” he admitted. “The war. The traitor. The DNA test. Jonah. You.” I reached out and took his hand. “We’ll get through it.” He squeezed my fingers gently. “I know. But I don’t like seeing you pulled in so many directions.” I smiled softly. “I’m not being pulled away from you.” Kayden’s shoulders relaxed. “Good.” Jayden and Hayden joined us moments later, each greeting me with a warm kiss on the forehead. Their presence grounded me instantly. “We’re meeting the Alphas in the strategy room,” Jayden said. “They want to finalize the defensive formations.” “And Jonah wants you there,” Hayden added. “He said it’s important.” Selena perked up. We should go. I nodded. “Let’s go.” The strategy room was filled with maps, charts, and diagrams. Alpha Jonah stood near the largest map, tracing a line along the border with Midnight Moon. Hunter and Leon flanked him, each wearing expressions of deep concentration. Jonah looked up when we entered. “Zendrea. Good. I wanted you to see this.” I stepped closer, my mates forming a protective triangle around me. Jonah pointed to a marked area near the border. “This is where the crescent moon symbol was found.” I swallowed. “The healer’s mark.” “Yes,” Jonah said. “And last night, another symbol appeared.” He handed me a small piece of parchment. On it was a simple drawing — a crescent moon intertwined with a flame. “What does it mean?” I asked. Jonah’s voice softened. “It’s a family mark.” My breath caught. “Family?” He nodded. “It’s used only by the Alpha’s bloodline. My bloodline.” Selena surged forward, her energy buzzing. Ours, she whispered. Jayden stepped closer, his voice gentle but firm. “What are you saying?” Jonah met his gaze. “Someone from my family was here. Recently. And they left this mark intentionally.” Hayden frowned. “Why?” “To show they found her,” Jonah said quietly. “Or at least… found a trace.” My heart pounded. “A trace of me?” Jonah nodded. “If you are Marisol, then your wolf carries our bloodline. Your scent would be familiar to them. They may have sensed it.” I stared at the parchment, my fingers trembling slightly. The symbol felt familiar — not visually, but emotionally. Like something buried deep inside me recognized it. Kayden stepped closer, his voice low. “What does this mean for us?” Jonah sighed. “It means they’re close. And it means they’re still searching.” Jayden’s jaw tightened. “If they come here, they’ll be walking into a war zone.” Jonah nodded. “I know. Which is why we need to be ready.” He turned back to the map. “Midnight Moon and Red Dawn are moving faster than expected. Their forces have doubled in the last week.” Hunter crossed his arms. “They’re preparing for something big.” Leon added, “And they’re not hiding it.” Jonah looked at me again. “Zendrea… if you are Marisol, they may try to use you.” My stomach twisted. “Use me how?” Jonah hesitated. “As leverage. As a bargaining chip. As a way to weaken our alliance.” Jayden stepped in front of me, protective. “They won’t touch her.” Hayden added, “Not while we breathe.” Kayden’s voice was low and dangerous. “They’ll die before they get close.” Jonah nodded. “I know. But we need to prepare for every possibility.” I swallowed hard. “What do we do?” Jonah pointed to the map. “We strengthen the borders. Increase patrols. Train harder. And wait for the DNA results.” Selena pressed forward. We need to know. I nodded. “When will the results be ready?” Jonah’s expression softened. “The doctor said tomorrow.” Tomorrow. My heart raced. Tomorrow, I would know whether I was Marisol — whether I belonged to Jonah’s family, whether I had parents out there who had been searching for me for twenty‑one years. Jayden touched my arm gently. “Whatever the results say, you stay with us.” “I know,” I whispered. Jonah stepped closer, his voice soft. “Zendrea… may I show you something?” I nodded. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small folded piece of paper. When he opened it, I saw a drawing — a baby wrapped in a blanket, with a crescent moon above her head. “This was drawn by my mother,” Jonah said quietly. “The day Marisol disappeared.” My breath caught. “She drew this?” “Yes,” Jonah said. “She said she wanted to remember her face. Her eyes. Her smile.” I stared at the drawing, my chest tightening. The baby had my eyes. My chin. My nose. Selena whispered, It’s us. Jonah’s voice softened. “If the DNA test confirms it… she’ll want to see you.” I swallowed hard. “And if it doesn’t?” Jonah smiled gently. “Then I will still consider you family.” Jayden wrapped an arm around my shoulders. “Let’s take a moment.” I nodded, leaning into him as Hayden and Kayden closed in protectively. Jonah watched quietly, his expression full of hope and something like grief. Tomorrow would change everything. And I wasn’t sure whether I was ready — but I knew I wasn’t alone.
