chapter 1
Everyone in the class watched as the teacher talked and said the things they needed to hear.
“Today, human behavior and the ability to predict it is without a doubt the most rewarding skill in the world. With the attention span we have today, no topic lasts too long, so we need to be able to understand people’s interests. And our special guest today is an expert at it.”
Shea looked at her notebook as she listened to what the teacher said and took notes. Her studies were important to her.
Just then, one of her friends pulled her sleeve. She turned and looked at her friend unhappily.
“Who do you think it is?” Her friend whispered at her, ignoring Shea’s gaze.
“This person is young, like you, but in his short years, he has amassed an unimaginable fortune, has been the protagonist of extraordinary negotiations with winnings of more than one hundred million dollars….” The teacher continued speaking.
She shrugged her shoulder and returned her gaze to the front.
“Being so young, his reputation has expanded rapidly to be known as the mind reader! Everyone join hands for our honorable guest, Mr. Ekul!” The teacher announced.
Upon hearing the name, many people who knew Mr. Ekul were surprised. Then he entered the room.
Upon seeing him, all the applause became much louder. The man wore a black suit and a navy blue vest without a tie.
He walked towards the teacher and greeted him as if they were familiar with each other.
After that, the teacher left Mr. Ekul in front.
Mr. Ekul took off his jacket, leaving him with his perfect white shirt. He rolled up his sleeves as he looked at everyone in the class.
Shea watched him. When their eyes met, a small smile spread across the young woman’s face.
Just then, Ekul took a deep breath. He sat on the desk and looked in all directions with arms crossed over.
“What is the most powerful force in the world?” He asked. No greeting them whatsoever.
They all looked at each other as they all began to speculate what could be the correct answer.
Ekul glanced at the teacher, who was about to speak but was halted when someone raised his hand, which caught Mr. Ekul’s attention.
“The money!” The young man answered with great confidence. He was not much younger than Ekul.
“And why do you think so?” Ekul asked with a small smile.
“Because with money, you can do everything you want!” The young man responded firmly.
Ekul nodded. He looked at the class and asked, “Everyone agrees with that statement?”
Shea breathed, she wasn’t shy, but she wasn’t too outgoing either. In her mind, the possibility of embarrassing herself was present.
Mustering up her courage, she raised her hand and said, “I do not agree!”
They both looked at each other, and a kind of tension appeared between them. Shea did not like the thought that she was feeling attracted to him.
Ekul smirked as he stared at her with a smile. Shea could also feel that everyone else was looking in her direction, which felt really uncomfortable.
“And tell me, why don’t you agree?” Ekul asked.
She glanced at the young man, who had given the answer earlier, before responding, “There are things that money can’t buy!”
The young man let out a loud and arrogant laugh before he asked mockingly. “Where did you get that phrase? From one of the stickers in your notebook?”
The teacher frowned and was going to intervene, but Ekul shook his head, letting the situation continue.
Shea looked at Ekul. It was clear that he wasn’t going to jump to save her, and for some reason, that made her angry.
“Yes, those stickers on my notebook, he said. Maybe money is so important to you because it’s the only way to get what you want,” she coldly and firmly responded to the young man.
The young man smirked and replied, “It’s the only way we all have to get what we want... or are you going to tell me you wouldn’t date me if I were a millionaire!”
She shook her head and casually replied, “I wouldn’t go out with you even if you were Ekul—”
Shea immediately halted and then covered her mouth. She wasn’t thinking.
Seeing her like this made everyone laugh.
“Yeah!” All idiots say that...until you have the money!” The young man said while glaring at Shea.
Shea was not intimidated. She grinned and said, “Maybe, but as long as you’re broke, you’ll be alone! And you will not be able to verify what you say!”
The angry young man suddenly stood up. He was clearly offended. It was like he was ready to fight at Shea at that time.
Ekul raised his hand and said, “If it’s not money, then what is the most powerful force in the world, miss... What’s your name, miss?” He was staring at Shea seriously.
“Shea,” she replied.
“Beautiful name,” he said, smiling. “Tell me, Miss Shea, what is the most powerful force in the world?”
She breathed hard before replying, “Irrational violence.”
Everyone turned to look at her, stunned. Ekul smiled. His eyes that were focused on her glinted with interest for a moment before they disappeared.
No one seemed to notice it, as everyone else attention was on Shea. They did not expect the girl to provide that kind of response.
“Is she sure about that?” Ekul asked.
She nodded firmly, “Very sure!”
Ekul began to walk toward where she was sitting. Everyone watched him do so.
As he walked, he said, “Does that mean, according to your belief, all the billions of dollars that have been spent on building a civilization where we can all live with peace of mind is irrelevant in the face of irrational violence?”
When Ekul finished speaking, he was already next to Shea.
Shea saw how tall and muscular he was. She held her breath for a couple of seconds before responding, “That’s exactly what I’m saying.”
“Then what good is society?” He questioned, looking at her.
“A lot!” Shea smilingly explained, “Society protects us from people who can hurt us, but that protection is based on a contract that we all accept at birth. We follow the rules that this Society dictates because it benefits us. But what if we irrationally try to break the rules? Then who protects us?”
Shea smirked and stared at Ekul before continuing, “Let’s say, at this moment, Ekul, I killed you. Not even your money or your millions or your fame would change the fact that you are dead!”
He stared at her. Ekul was impressed with the character that the young woman showed.
“You’d go to prison if you tried something like that!” Ekul replied, smiling.
She nodded, “Yeah, I’d probably have a hard life. Still, dead won’t care!”
“And that is why irrational violence is the most powerful force,” he said with understanding.
“If I can make the economic order of our country change by an irrational act, what would you call that, Mr. Ekul?” Shea asked, smiling.
Ekul grinned and replied, “A very exciting first date!”
Everyone burst out laughing at the joke. However, Ekul and Shae stared at each other as if no one seemed to be interested in letting go.
But Ekul looked away first. He looked at the rest of the class and said, “She is right. Violence is an unstoppable force in this world as long as it is irrational. However, if we rationalize it, we will all be subject to real rules. That is the key to knowing people’s behavior. Know the rules of the game!”
The class continued. Ekul gave a masterful presentation of what they were talking about.
Shea was distracted. She was scared but seriously interested in Ekul.
When the class ended, all her friends congratulated her for her excellent participation. Shea was somewhat happy about what happened. Her friends were waiting for her to leave when Ekul walked among the remaining students.
“I must say, you did something today that not many people do,” Ekul said, smiling at her.
The others that saw this subconsciously moved away from them. Ekul was clearly not there for them.
“What thing?” Shae asked, somewhat shy.
He got closer and said, “Amaze me!”
She lowered her head when she felt her face heat up. Damn, I’m blushing? This is so embarrassing! Shae complained to herself.
Her thoughts cut off when she heard him speak.
“I know this is a dare, but. Would you agree to go out to dinner with me?”
Her eyes widened, surprised. Shae looked back at the man, and she saw him patiently waiting for her answer.
His voice was not really so low, causing the others to hear him as well. Everyone was stunned when they heard him.
“I think... But why me?” Shae asked while looking around nervously.
“Because money can’t buy you, according to yourself,” Ekul replied, seriously.
“No, I’m not for sale, Mr. Ekul!” Shea replied while looking at him with a frown. “I appreciate her invitation, but I’m afraid I can’t accept it. I’m very busy!”
As soon as she was done speaking, she hurriedly left.
Ekul watched her leave with a smile. He knew that this was a cautious woman, and it had been a very long time since he had seen someone like her.
“You’re interesting, Shea,” Ekul mumbled to himself. He was now determined to get to know more about the girl who impressed him and rejected him.
