Chapter 4Jason, August–December 1976 Gavin’s junior year at Chapel Hill High School started on a late August Wednesday morning. The daily reminder had been broadcast over the intercom (that morning it was the Know the Enemy message), the oath of allegiance had been recited, and Mrs. Zorn, the homeroom teacher, had read the Morning Prayer. The Imperial flag had been dipped three times. The students had been told for the fifth time that the new Automatic Reporting Machine, the ARM, in front of the school was out of order and would be fixed by tomorrow. In the meantime, students can come to the office to make reports. If any suspicious people were seen anywhere near the ARM, students were to report them immediately. Mrs. Zorn passed out schedules and insurance forms and those with scheduling
