Chapter 1: "fresh Start"
I woke up suddenly, my heart racing. The sound of Jake's noisy snores reverberated throughout the bedroom, each inhale acting as a constant reminder of the creature lying just a couple of feet from me. Moonlight filtered through the transparent curtains, casting eerie shadows on the living room floor. This was the end. My opportunity to flee. I slowly got up from the uncomfortable couch, feeling pain in my ribs. I stopped in my tracks as the floorboards creaked beneath me. Jake's snoring paused briefly before returning to its consistent pattern. I let out a shaky exhale. Sneaking over to the hallway closet, I took out the tiny suitcase I had previously stashed there. I struggled with the zipper as my shaky fingers inspected the small contents again. Some change of clothing, personal hygiene items, and the money I had been saving for several months. It may not have been a lot, but it was everything I possessed. Walking past the hallway mirror, I noticed my reflection. The woman staring back at me was hardly familiar. Sparse brown hair surrounded a thin face, with prominent dark circles under dull eyes. The yellow-green bruise on my cheekbone stood out vividly against my pale skin as it slowly faded. Jake's most recent "training" in following orders. I tensed my jaw. This is the end. I have had enough of being his target for physical and verbal abuse and feeling like his property. I lifted the suitcase, its heaviness unimportant compared to the load I had been bearing for a long time. My phone vibrated in my pocket, making me almost drop everything. Using trembling hands, I retrieved it and noticed a message from a job-hunting application I had downloaded. "Live-in position available with the Stone family for a nanny." I stopped breathing. It appeared unreal - a job and a secure accommodation, combined. I selected the entry, quickly reading the information. The location was hours away in a town that Jake could not easily access. The payment received for work done. This could be my ticket out. I hesitated for only a moment before hitting "Apply." My fingers flew across the screen as I filled out the application, trying to make myself sound qualified despite my lack of formal childcare experience. I agonized over every word of my hastily written cover letter, hoping to convey reliability and warmth. The bones in my wrist, not long healed from Jake's last explosion of rage, ached as I typed. I pushed through the discomfort, knowing this might be my only shot at freedom. Application sent, I tucked the phone away and gripped the suitcase handle. Dawn was breaking, pale light creeping across the apartment. My gaze swept over the place I'd once thought would be a love nest, taking in the overturned furniture and shattered dishes - remnants of Jake's most recent rampage. A lump formed in my throat. How had I let things get this bad? No. I couldn't think like that. This wasn't my fault. Jake was the monster, not me. Inhaling deeply, I looked away from the ruins of my previous life. I cautiously pushed the front door open, wincing at each squeak and groan. The hallway before me was both welcoming and daunting due to its emptiness. Gradually, placing one foot in front of the other. I reached the stairwell without any problems, my steps resonating in the quiet of the early morning. Five flights down, and I was in the lobby. My chest tightened as I approached the main doors, half-expecting Jake to materialize and drag me back upstairs. However, nobody intervened as I walked onto the pavement. The cool breeze gently touched my face, signaling a fresh start. I greeted myself with a brief grin as I hurriedly headed to where I had left my car the night before. The old, battered sedan appeared insignificant, yet it represented freedom at that instant. I positioned my bags in the rear and got comfortable in the driver's seat, my hands shaking as I started the engine. I quietly said, "Time to leave, time to leave," while starting the car. The engine produced two spluttering sounds before starting with a roar. I chuckled in relief and fought back the urge to cry. As I drove off, I repeatedly looked in the rearview mirror, anticipating Jake's truck to be following closely. Still, as I made my way through the waking city, the road behind me stayed deserted. I didn't have a specific place I wanted to go, just somewhere far away, but applying for a job with the Stone family seemed like a chance at a fresh start. As the miles passed, I held onto that hope tightly. Two hours later, I needed to stop because I was hungry and the fuel tank was nearly empty. Upon arriving at a small gas station by the highway, my nervousness increased as I observed the nearly empty parking area. "You're making good progress. Your location is unknown to him," I assured my self as I fumbled with my wallet. A truck, closely resembling Jake's, arrived at the gas station in front of me. My heart jumped, and I quickly ducked down, hoping I had not been noticed. Looking out the window, I saw the driver briefly - an elderly woman with gray hair. I let out a shaky breath, chastising myself for getting overly agitated. Nonetheless, I was left feeling uneasy by the event. I quickly fueled up and picked up some snacks, always checking behind me. Back driving again, I gripped the steering wheel tightly, unable to shake the sensation of someone watching me. The sharp sound of my phone disrupted the anxious quiet. I yelped, swerving slightly before regaining control. Fishing the device from my pocket, my stomach dropped at the sight of an unknown number. Jake. He knows. He's found me somehow. My thumb hovered over the "Decline" button. But what if ignoring him only made things worse? Steeling myself, I answered. "H-hello?" "Hello, is this Clara Rain?" a crisp female voice asked. I blinked in confusion. "Yes, this is she." "Wonderful. This is Amelia Hodges, assistant to Alexander Stone. I'm calling regarding your application for the nanny position. Mr. Stone was quite impressed with your qualifications and would like to schedule an in-person interview. Would you be available to come in this afternoon?" My mind reeled, hope blooming in my chest. "Y-yesy! I can be there in..." I glanced at the GPS on my phone, "about three hours?" "Perfect. I'll send you the address and some additional details shortly. We look forward to meeting you, Ms. Rain." I hung up, a giddy laugh bubbling up. This was happening. I had a shot at a new life, a chance to reinvent myself far from Jake's reach. As I drove, billboards for Stone Enterprises began appearing with increasing frequency. Each one showcased Alexander Stone's handsome face, touting his business acumen and philanthropic efforts. The man's influence was clear, his wealth and power evident in every carefully crafted advertisement. A tiny part of me wondered if I was jumping from one controlling situation into another. But I quickly shoved that thought aside. The Stones represented safety and stability – everything I'd been lacking for far too long. The GPS led me away from the highway and onto twisty rural roads. Upon reaching the peak of the hill, Stone mansion came into view. The size of the location left me amazed. Iron gates protected the long driveway that led to a grand mansion that looked like it came from a movie. I straightened my wrinkled shirt and messed up my untidy hair, knowing well how disheveled I looked. After spending numerous hours behind the wheel and crashing on the sofa for the entire night, I appeared far from professional. However, there was no way for me to go back at this point. This was my only opportunity to improve my life. As I approached the gate, my hands shook when I pushed the intercom button.
