The camp was quiet. Everyone had turned in hours ago. Titus lay on the hard ground with his arm around Jade, keeping her body tucked in against his own for warmth. The sound of movement drew Titus from his sleep. He lifted his head and looked around for the source of the sound. It was dark, and the fires were dwindling, nothing more them smouldering embers. He heard it again—movement coming from the trees. Titus eased Jade out of his arms and got to his feet quietly. He drew his sword and started toward the source of the sound. He stepped into the darkness of the trees. Ready to defend himself, he moved farther into the woods lining the camp. A twig snapping startled him. Whatever it was, it was moving.
