Chapter 25: The Price of Love
Silver fire vanished inside the Ash King.
For one impossible second, the monster froze mid-stride.
Then cracks of white light spread through its iron body like lightning trapped beneath stone.
It screamed with two voices—
Cassian’s rage.
Something older’s hunger.
The cathedral shook violently.
Elias covered his head as chunks of ceiling rained down.
“I hate endings!”
Adrian staggered upright, horror overtaking pain.
“Lena!”
He ran.
The red cracks on his chest flared with every step.
Selene caught his arm.
“If you go near that blast, you die.”
He tore free.
“Then move.”
The Ash King clawed at its own chest as light burned outward from within.
Lena’s voice echoed through the hall.
Not loud.
Everywhere.
No more cages.
The monster split open.
A column of silver flame erupted through the roof and into the storm sky.
Iron melted.
Walls shattered.
The sealed cathedral doors burst outward into the street.
The city lights flickered block after block.
Then silence.
Where the Ash King had stood, only drifting ash remained.
And at the center of the ruin—
Lena knelt on the cracked floor.
Head bowed.
Motionless.
Adrian reached her first.
He dropped beside her, hands shaking as he touched her face.
Warm.
Alive.
But fading.
Her eyes opened slowly.
Gray smoke drifted upward from her skin.
Adrian’s voice broke.
“What have you done?”
“What you taught me,” she whispered. “I chose.”
He closed his eyes in pain.
“No. I taught you all the wrong things.”
She lifted trembling fingers to his cheek.
“You learned too.”
The red cracks on his chest were disappearing.
Transferred.
Silver lines now burned across Lena’s arms and throat.
Selene approached, pale for once.
“The gate accepted her.”
Elias stared. “Meaning what?”
Selene’s voice was quiet.
“She becomes the seal.”
Adrian turned sharply.
“No.”
“It is already done.”
Lena’s breathing slowed.
The floor beneath her glowed with ancient symbols.
Stone was binding to her light.
Elias knelt on her other side.
“There has to be another way.”
She smiled weakly at him.
“You always wanted one.”
“That’s because this one is terrible.”
Despite everything, she laughed softly.
Adrian gathered her carefully into his arms.
“I will tear every gate apart.”
“You’ll try,” she said. “And complain beautifully.”
Tears finally fell from eyes that had watched wars without blinking.
“I cannot lose you.”
“You already changed for me,” Lena whispered. “Now live for me.”
The symbols brightened.
Wind spiraled through the broken roof.
Selene stepped back first.
Then Elias.
Adrian did not move.
Lena kissed him once.
Then touched Elias’s hand.
Then looked at all three of them.
“No more choosing,” she said.
Light swallowed her.
Adrian cried out as her body dissolved into silver fire inside his arms.
The flames rushed downward into the cathedral floor.
The cracks sealed.
The symbols faded.
And where Lena had been—
only a single silver pendant remained.
No black stone.
No chain.
Just light captured in crystal.
Rain began to fall through the ruined roof.
Adrian stared at the pendant in his shaking hand.
Elias turned away, unable to speak.
Selene lowered her eyes.
For the first time in centuries—
the city was quiet.
And the woman both worlds tried to claim
had chosen neither.
