Chapter 1: The Girl in the Rain The city never truly slept. Even at midnight, lights from towers glowed against the dark sky, streets hummed with distant traffic, and rain painted the sidewalks silver. In the center of it all stood Lena Vale, twenty-five years old, wrapped in a long black coat, staring at the skyline from the rooftop of her apartment building. No one really knew Lena. Neighbors called her polite but distant. Coworkers said she was beautiful but impossible to read. She smiled often, but it never reached her eyes. She carried secrets the way others carried handbags—always close, never opened. Tonight, the wind tangled her dark hair as thunder rolled across the city. She should have gone inside. Instead, she waited. And then she heard footsteps behind her. “You always come here when it rains.” The voice was warm, familiar. Lena turned slowly. Elias Hart stood near the rooftop door, holding two cups of coffee. His shirt was damp from the storm, curls falling over his forehead. He looked like the kind of man people trusted instantly. Lena had spent two years trying not to trust him. “You followed me,” she said. “I brought coffee. That sounds kinder.” He held one cup toward her. She hesitated, then took it. Their fingers brushed. A dangerous mistake. Elias watched her carefully. “You disappeared again this week.” “I was busy.” “You always say that when you’re lying.” She looked away. The city lights blurred in the rain. “You don’t know enough about me to call me a liar.” “No,” he said softly. “But I’d like to.” Something tightened in her chest. Before she could answer, another voice cut through the storm. “I was wondering where you’d gone.” Both turned. A tall man stepped from the shadows near the stairwell. He wore a dark suit untouched by rain, as if the storm itself avoided him. His silver eyes landed on Lena first. Then Elias. Then back to Lena. “Who is this?” Elias asked quietly. Lena’s face lost all color. The stranger smiled, slow and sharp. “My name is Adrian Cross,” he said. “And Lena belongs with me.” Silence crashed louder than thunder. Elias took a step forward. “I think Lena can speak for herself.” Adrian ignored him. His gaze never left Lena. “You left without saying goodbye,” Adrian said. “That hurt.” Lena’s voice came cold and low. “You should have stayed gone.” Elias looked between them. “Lena… who is he?” Her hands trembled around the coffee cup. “A mistake,” she whispered. Adrian’s smile deepened. “No,” he said. “I’m the reason your heart still beats faster when it storms.” Lightning split the sky. And for the first time in years, Lena looked afraid.
