Secrets in the Storm

Chapter 2: Secrets in the Storm Rain poured harder, turning the rooftop into glass beneath their feet. Lena stood frozen between the two men. One was the future she had been afraid to want. The other was the past she could never escape. Elias broke the silence first. “Lena,” he said carefully, eyes still on Adrian, “tell me what’s going on.” She opened her mouth, but no words came. How could she explain Adrian Cross? How could she explain the years she spent trying to forget him? Adrian stepped closer, his shoes silent against the wet concrete. “You don’t need to explain anything to him.” Elias moved in front of Lena without thinking. “She doesn’t need your permission either.” Something dark flashed in Adrian’s silver eyes. The air around them changed. The wind sharpened. The rain seemed to pause in midair. Lena’s heart dropped. “Stop,” she said sharply. Both men looked at her. She stepped between them, forcing calm into her voice. “Not here. Not tonight.” Adrian’s jaw tightened. “You’re protecting him.” “I’m preventing a disaster.” Elias frowned. “Can someone tell me why it suddenly feels like the temperature dropped ten degrees?” Lena looked at him, pain in her expression. Because you don’t belong in this world, she thought. But Adrian answered first. “Because,” he said smoothly, “you’re standing near something dangerous.” Elias laughed once, without humor. “You mean you?” Adrian smiled. “Exactly.” Lena grabbed Elias’s wrist. “Go home.” He stared at her. “Not until you tell me who he is.” Her fingers tightened. “Please.” It was the first time Elias had ever heard her beg. That frightened him more than Adrian ever could. He searched her face and saw something he had never seen there before. Fear. Real fear. Slowly, reluctantly, he stepped back. “This isn’t over,” he said quietly. “It can be,” Adrian replied. Elias ignored him. His eyes stayed on Lena. “When you’re ready to tell me the truth,” he said, “I’ll listen.” Then he walked to the rooftop door and disappeared down the stairs. The moment he was gone, Lena turned on Adrian. “Why are you here?” He took another step closer. “Because you ran.” “I survived.” “You abandoned me.” “I escaped you.” For the first time, Adrian’s expression cracked. Anger mixed with something deeper. “You think I came for revenge?” “I know you too well.” “No,” he said softly. “You knew me once.” Lightning flashed again. For a second, strange shadows moved behind him—like wings made of darkness. Lena’s breath caught. “You haven’t changed,” she whispered. Adrian’s voice dropped lower. “I changed the night you left.” He reached toward her face. She slapped his hand away. “Don’t touch me.” His eyes burned silver. “You still wear the chain.” Without thinking, Lena touched the necklace hidden beneath her coat. A black stone hung from it. His gift. Her curse. She should have thrown it away years ago. But she never could. Adrian noticed the motion and smiled sadly. “You hate me,” he said. “Yet you kept the only thing I ever gave you.” Lena’s voice shook. “I kept it to remember what monsters look like.” He leaned close enough for her to feel the cold coming off his skin. “Then look carefully,” he whispered. “Because this monster still loves you.” Before she could move, he vanished into the storm like smoke. Lena stood alone on the rooftop, shaking. Down on the street below, Elias had not gone home. He stood in the rain, staring up at the roof. And in his hand was the black stone pendant chain Lena had dropped. End of Chapter 2 Say Chapter 3 when you're ready.
