Chapter 14: A Queen Without a Throne
Rain dripped from the alley fire escape.
The streetlamp above Selene flickered, casting gold light across her dark coat. Gone was the white bridal elegance she once wore. Tonight she looked sharper, colder—like mourning turned into a weapon.
Elias groaned softly.
“Why does everyone in your world enter dramatically?”
Selene’s smile widened.
“Because ordinary entrances are for humans.”
“Rude.”
Lena stepped forward, silver light gathering in her palm.
“You should have stayed gone.”
Selene looked almost amused.
“And miss this? The fallen king bleeding in alleys. The runaway girl playing protector. The charming mortal still somehow alive.”
Adrian’s voice turned hard.
“Say what you came to say.”
Selene’s gaze slid to him.
“You first.”
For a heartbeat, something old passed between them—history, betrayal, unfinished war.
Then she spoke.
“The lower courts have split into factions. Some want you dead. Some want you restored.” She tilted her head. “Most simply want power.”
Adrian said nothing.
Selene looked at Lena.
“And all of them know she is the easiest road to your throat.”
Lena’s jaw tightened. “Try.”
Selene’s expression softened strangely.
“I’m not here to threaten you tonight.”
“No one believes that,” Elias said.
“Your honesty remains exhausting.”
She stepped closer into the light.
There was a cut at her temple. Bruising along one wrist. Signs of battle.
Lena noticed.
“Who attacked you?”
Selene laughed once.
“The same people who once bowed to me.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “The Iron Circle.”
“So the mortal king still remembers names.”
“The Iron Circle answers to no court.”
“They do now,” Selene replied. “Their leader claims the throne is empty.”
A chill moved through the alley.
Lena looked between them.
“What throne?”
Adrian answered quietly.
“The Shadow Throne. Source of authority over the hidden world.”
Elias folded his arms. “I’m sorry, there’s an actual throne?”
“Yes,” all three said.
He blinked. “Of course there is.”
Selene met Adrian’s gaze.
“They move tomorrow night. Once seated, they control the gates beneath the city.”
Lena frowned. “Why tell us?”
Selene’s mask slipped for the first time.
“Because I would rather destroy you myself than watch fools inherit what was promised to me.”
Adrian almost smiled.
“There she is.”
She ignored him.
“I need your help.”
Silence.
Then Elias burst out laughing.
“No.”
Selene turned slowly. “Excuse me?”
“You tried to kill us repeatedly. You released monsters. You called me a pet.”
“I said she keeps pets.”
“Still rude.”
Lena should not have smiled, but did.
Selene looked offended by it.
Adrian studied her carefully.
“What do you really want?”
For a moment, the answer seemed difficult even for her.
Then she said:
“I want a world where I am not handed from alliance to alliance like jewelry.”
The alley went still.
Lena’s anger shifted.
Not gone.
Changed.
Selene looked at her directly.
“You think we are opposites,” she said. “But they built cages for both of us.”
Lena lowered her hand slightly.
Adrian looked between them, something like regret crossing his face.
“I never knew—”
“No,” Selene cut in. “You never asked.”
Footsteps sounded above.
All four looked up.
Dark figures lined the rooftops.
Dozens.
Iron masks glinting in the rain.
The Iron Circle had found them.
One voice rang out from above:
“Bring us the girl. Kill the rest.”
Elias sighed.
“I miss noodles.”
Adrian stepped beside Lena.
Selene moved to her other side.
For the first time—
they stood together.
