The First Gate

Chapter 20: The First Gate The cathedral floor broke apart. Stone slabs slid into the widening pit beneath the altar. Firelight surged upward, painting the pillars red. Ancient chains rattled from the depths like thunder dragged through iron. Something was climbing. Lena backed away with Adrian’s grip tight on her wrist. “What did he do?” Cassian stepped to the edge of the chasm, coat billowing in the rising heat. “I broke the key,” he said, glancing at the shattered sword hilt. “The blade was forged from the lock itself. Destroy it, and the first gate wakes.” Elias stared. “So the evil sword was load-bearing?” “No one asked you to speak,” Selene snapped. “I’m helping emotionally.” The Iron Circle fighters knelt around the pit. Chanting began in a harsh, ancient tongue. Adrian’s face darkened. “They’re feeding it blood-law.” Lena frowned. “Meaning?” “It means we have seconds.” A claw the size of a car slammed onto the stone rim. The cathedral shook. Then another. A monstrous shape pulled itself from the gate—skin like black rock split by lava veins, horns curving backward, jaws lined with molten teeth. Its eyes opened. Burning gold. Elias took one slow step backward. “I would like to resign from all this forever.” Selene’s voice was tight. “Gate Warden.” The creature inhaled. Heat blasted across the hall, setting fallen pews ablaze. Cassian bowed his head to it. “Open the path.” The Warden roared. Sound shattered every remaining stained-glass window. Lena’s silver light flared instinctively, shielding her group from flying shards. Adrian pulled free and stepped forward despite the poison burning through him. “You can barely stand,” Lena said. “I’ve fought worse.” “You’re lying.” “Frequently.” He drew a fallen sword from the floor. Mortal hands. Mortal breath. Still he advanced. Cassian smiled. “That is why they loved you.” The Warden charged. Each step cracked stone. Adrian met it head-on. He ducked the first claw, drove the blade into its forearm, rolled beneath its jaws. Fast, precise, fearless. The sword melted in seconds. He swore. Lena launched a spear of silver energy into the creature’s chest. It staggered. Selene joined with ribbons of black force that wrapped its legs. Elias hurled a burning bench leg. It bounced harmlessly off a horn. “…Worth trying,” he said. The Warden snapped the bindings and backhanded Adrian across the cathedral. He hit a pillar and collapsed. “Adrian!” Lena ran toward him. Cassian moved to intercept. “You care for broken things too easily.” She struck first. Silver light against iron fists. Their clash sent shockwaves through the hall. Cassian caught her wrist, twisted, and whispered: “You are wasted on love.” She headbutted him. His nose broke with a sharp crack. Elias pointed. “Yes!” Cassian blinked once, blood running down his face. Then laughed. Selene dragged Adrian behind fallen stone. “He cannot keep moving,” she said. “He will,” Adrian answered weakly. “That is the problem.” The Warden turned toward the city doors. If it escaped the cathedral— thousands would die. Lena saw it. Saw the burning streets beyond. Saw Adrian bleeding. Saw Cassian smiling through blood. Something in her settled. She looked at Elias. “When I tell you to run, do it.” “I hate when you say things like that.” She kissed him. Quick. Fierce. Real. Then she turned to Adrian. Their eyes met across fire and ruin. Too much history for words. She faced the Gate Warden and lifted both hands. Silver light exploded upward into the shape of enormous wings. Cassian’s smile vanished. “What are you doing?” Lena’s voice rang through the cathedral. “Closing the gate.” And she flew straight into the fire. End of Chapter 20 Say Chapter 21 when you're ready.
