Chapter 10: The Choice of Fire The city went silent. Even the screams below seemed to fade beneath the force pouring from Lena’s body. White light surrounded her like a storm of stars. Cracks spread across the street beneath her feet, glowing from within. Rain turned to steam before it touched her skin. Adrian had seen kingdoms fall. He had never seen power like this. Selene stepped backward, fear finally visible on her perfect face. “What are you?” she whispered. Lena’s voice echoed strangely, layered with something ancient. “I’m done being what others made me.” She raised one hand. The Heart Below roared and charged. Its massive fists came down like collapsing towers. Lena did not move. The moment the fists neared her, they stopped midair—as if the world itself had obeyed her command. Then, with a single gesture, she flung the giant backward. It crashed through three buildings, sending smoke and debris across the skyline. Elias groaned from the broken bus stop. “Did... did she always do that?” Adrian almost smiled. “No.” Selene’s rage replaced her fear. “She cannot hold that power! It will tear her apart.” “Then you should run,” Adrian said coldly. Selene screamed and unleashed a storm of black blades toward Lena. Lena turned. The blades melted into harmless ash before reaching her. Selene froze. Lena crossed the ruined street, each step leaving light in the cracked pavement. “You built your life on control,” Lena said. “Just like him.” She glanced at Adrian. Pain flashed across his face. Selene attacked again, faster, wilder. Lena caught her wrist. The entire avenue shook. “Enough.” A pulse of light burst outward. Selene was thrown across the street, crashing through a stone wall. She did not rise. The Heart Below climbed from the rubble behind them, angrier than before. Its chains whipped through the air like serpents. Lena swayed. Adrian reached her side. “You’re weakening.” “I know.” “This power is killing you.” She met his eyes. “Then help me finish it.” For a moment, all the anger between them disappeared. Only truth remained. Adrian placed his hand over hers. Darkness and light intertwined. The city trembled as shadow and silver power spiraled together into one burning force. Elias, barely standing now, stared in disbelief. “Okay,” he muttered. “That’s annoyingly dramatic.” The Heart Below charged once more. Lena looked back at Elias. Their eyes met. Warmth. Safety. Everything she wanted but might never have. Then she turned to Adrian. Regret. History. A love that had wounded them both. She inhaled shakily. “No more bonds,” she whispered. She pulled her hand free from Adrian’s. Then she took all the combined power into herself. Adrian’s eyes widened. “Lena, don’t—” She launched upward like a comet of white and black flame. Straight through the chest of the Heart Below. The giant stopped. Light burst from every crack in its body. Then it shattered into dust across the city sky. Silence followed. Lena fell. Adrian moved first. Elias moved second. Both reached for her. But only one caught her. And when the smoke cleared, Lena lay unconscious in Elias’s arms. Adrian stood beside them, staring at his empty hands. Rain began to fall again. End of Chapter 10 Say Chapter 11 when you're ready.
