Chapter 1
The first message arrived at 8:43 PM, a photograph. Ryan Brew sat inside a private lounge with a blonde woman curled against his side while his hand rested possessively on her waist. Underneath the image was a short anonymous text. ”Your husband has been lying to you for a long time.” For several seconds, Ivy Lois simply stared at the screen without blinking. Then she locked her phone and continued arranging the dining table. The crystal glasses remained perfectly aligned. The candles burned softly beside the untouched dinner. At the center of the table sat a small white gift box containing the pregnancy results she had picked up that morning. Positive. After four years of treatments, disappointment, injections, tears, and prayers whispered in the dark, she was finally pregnant and tonight was her wedding anniversary too. Another notification appeared, this time, a video. Ivy pressed play. Ryan’s voice immediately filled the room. “You worry too much.” His tone was relaxed. “I’ll deal with Ivy soon.” The blonde woman laughed. “What if she refuses to leave?” A pause. Then Ryan answered. ”She won’t.” The certainty in his voice turned Ivy’s blood cold. The video ended. Silence swallowed the dining room and slowly, Ivy lowered herself into a chair. For months, she had felt something changing about Ryan’s behavior. Sometimes when she spoke, he barely seemed to hear her. Yet every time she questioned him, he smiled gently, kissed her forehead, and told her she was imagining things and she believed him because she loved him. At twenty-one, she had abandoned everything for Ryan Brew, her family, her future, her inheritance and also her position within Lois Group. Ryan had promised her that love mattered more than status. Now she understood something humiliating that to Ryan Brew, everything had a price. Even love. The front door opened downstairs, footsteps echoed through the mansion. A man’s voice drifted closer and a woman’s laughter followed. Not even hiding it anymore? Something inside Ivy went strangely calm. She stood just as Ryan entered the dining room with Vanessa Reed beside him, his secretary. Vanessa’s lipstick was slightly smudged, Ryan’s tie hung loose around his collar. Neither looked surprised to find Ivy awake, Ryan glanced briefly at the candlelit table and then at her. “Ivy.” His voice remained smooth. “You’re still awake?” Still? The word lodged itself sharply inside her chest. Vanessa looked around the room. “How romantic.” Ivy studied Ryan quietly, the same man who had once sat beside her during fertility appointments, the same man who had promised they would build a family together. Only now, she wondered if any of those promises had been real. “You brought her here?” Ivy asked. Ryan exhaled. “I don't want another argument tonight.” Not denial, not even an apology. Vanessa slipped naturally against his side. “I told him this was a bad idea,” she said softly. “But Ryan hates lying to you.” The hypocrisy nearly made Ivy laugh.Instead, her gaze dropped to the faint red scratches near Ryan’s watch. Vanessa’s lipstick matched them perfectly. Something inside her finally snapped. Ryan loosened his cuffs. “What’s all this?” His gaze swept over the anniversary dinner. For one dangerous second, Ivy almost told him, almost reached for the pregnancy results, almost told him about their baby, then she remembered the video and her fingers curled. A man already planning her replacement did not deserve that truth. “You forgot our anniversary dinner.” Ryan’s expression hardened. Vanessa answered for him. “We already ate.” Ivy nodded. For years she had blamed herself for the growing distance between them, her infertility, her failures, meanwhile Ryan had simply found someone else. “How long?” she asked. Ryan looked irritated. “Does it matter?” The question hurt more than shouting. Vanessa folded her arms. “You should stop making things difficult, Ivy.” Ivy looked at her, then at Ryan. “You know what’s funny?” Ryan frowned. “I thought life was testing our marriage.” Her voice remained calm. “But it turns out the problem was simply that you’re a coward.” Ryan’s jaw tightened. Vanessa scoffed. “Careful.” “No.” Ivy’s gaze never left Ryan. “You’ve both mistaken me for someone desperate.” For the first time that night, Ryan looked surprised. This wasn’t the woman who cried after every argument. This wasn’t the woman who spent years fixing problems he created. Ryan stepped forward. “Enough drama, I'm already having a hard time dealing with the White family.” “You cheated on your wife.” Ivy’s voice stayed steady. “You brought your mistress into her home.” She paused. “But somehow I’m the dramatic one.” Vanessa’s face darkened. “You act like a victim, but Ryan stayed with you out of pity.” Ryan didn’t deny it and that hurt more than the insult. Vanessa walked toward the dining table and casually opened the gift box. The smile vanished from Ivy’s face. Inside sat the pregnancy results. Vanessa blinked and then laughed. “Oh my God.” Ryan frowned. “What?” Vanessa lifted the paper. “She’s pregnant.” The room went silent, Ryan froze. For the first time that night, genuine shock crossed his face. Ivy instinctively covered her stomach. Something changed in Ryan’s expression, Vanessa saw it too and panic flashed across her face. “Ryan,” she said quickly. “You can’t be serious.” Ryan didn’t answer, his eyes remained fixed on Ivy, on her stomach. Vanessa moved suddenly, paper slipped from her hand as she grabbed Ivy’s wrist. “You planned this.” Her voice turned sharp. “You got pregnant on purpose.” Ivy jerked backward immediately. “Let go of me.” But Vanessa’s grip tightened harder and Ryan stepped forward sharply. “Vanessa.” She was already furious. ”You’re not trapping him with a baby!” “I said let go.” This time Ivy shoved her. Vanessa stumbled backward near the staircase before suddenly screaming. “Ryan!” Everything happened too fast afterward, Vanessa reached for Ivy and Ivy lost her footing.
A sharp pain exploded through her body as she crashed against the stairs, the world spun violently. By the time she hit the bottom, warmth spread beneath her. Blood. Somewhere above her, Vanessa started crying, Ryan rushed past Ivy instantly and straight to Vanessa. “I almost lost the baby…” Vanessa sobbed into his chest. The words barely registered through Ivy’s growing dizziness. Baby? Ivy looked up weakly. Ryan held Vanessa protectively while staring down at Ivy with fury rather than concern and in that moment, Ivy understood everything. Vanessa was pregnant too. “My baby…” she whispered. Ryan looked away first. ”I’m taking Vanessa to the hospital,” he said coldly. “Handle your own mess for once, Ivy.” Then he walked out. He walked out while she bled on the floor carrying his child, the front door slammed shut behind them.
