Prologue
"Are you sure you don’t want to give you and me another try?"
I never thought I would hear those words coming out of her mouth. First, I should probably introduce myself: I'm Arnold T. Elias, a 22-year-old billionaire. Which industry do you ask? Technology. I've been creating my empire since I was in high school while maintaining that 4.0 GPA. With money came fame, I've had multiple girlfriends while climbing up the social ladder, and yet the one I've wanted to have was always out of reach.
Now, back to where we left off. The lady who surprised me was Erin Landelot, heiress to the Landelot fortune, self-professed femme-fatale, and my ex-girlfriend. Her father, media mogul Daniel Landelot, has been eying one of the companies I own so he could expand his empire. Anyway, back to the conversation.
"I know that our break up was a messy one," she said as she moved to my side, "but I still love you."
Saying that our break up was a messy affair was a grave understatement. When we broke up, not only did she claim that I was only doing this for fame (which I wasn't), also that I was lying when I said that I was working late (which I was) and instead I was "screwing" my secretary (I wish that one was true). And the funniest thing is, everything she had accused me of, she had done herself. The only difference was that she was a smokin' hot woman with a figure that most women would die for and I was an introverted geek that looked average at best and was loaded. In other words, I wasn't her. And that instantly put me on America's most hated list. And that was one of the reasons why I was so hesitant to get back with her. In my head, I was looking for a way to get out of my current position and was seriously hoping that I had a meeting coming up. At that exact moment, my secretary and best friend Lily Sanderson came in.
"Mr. Elias, your mother is on line 1."
"Thanks, Lily. I'll pick it up."
I tried not to stare as she walked out of the room, and trust me, if you saw her you would understand how hard that is. It also didn't help that I had a humongous crush on her. If Erin was a femme-fatale, then Lily would be the girl next door.
"Sorry Erin, I need to take this call." Without waiting for her answer, I picked up the phone, and before I could say hi, my mom started talking.
"Hey sweetheart. I'm at the psychiatrist with Volante and was wondering if you could come as her diagnosis has come in." In my head, I ran all the possible situations and couldn't come up with a suitable one. After finishing up with my mom, I paged Lily.
"Lily, please come in."
As she walked in, I tried to keep my head-on.
"Please call David and tell him to take the car around. Also, cancel all my meetings for the rest of the day."
"Uhm, is this a bad time, 'cause I could come back another day?"
Between Lily and my mother, I completely forgot that Erin was even in my office.
"Everything is fine. Just a family problem." After a slight pause, I added "I'll call you when I'm free. Lily, please escort Ms. Landelot out."
Once they left, I let out a sigh of relief. It's never easy having feelings for a friend so close and yet it happened to me.
Oh man, Lily was a looker. At five foot three, she was shorter than all my previous girlfriends, yet this never stopped me from fantasizing about her. We met when I was seven, when I was being bullied by some of her "girlfriends". And like David, she ended up being my bodyguard ever since. She was the first person who ever truly understood me outside my family. So it was kinda weird when, in high school, I fell in love with her. Seeing her with other guys, especially that asshole Fabian, somehow would hit a raw nerve, yet I always supported her with a smile. Sometimes I think that she knew that my feelings toward her went past friendship, but she never acknowledged it. Then along came Erin and suddenly the roles had been reversed. I had never seen her react with such rage and it was fascinating to see her blow her top. It was something so beautiful yet so dangerous at the same time that it sometimes scared me to see her like that. Luckily for me, I've never been on her bad side (a miracle in itself considering some of the stupid things I've done since I met her).
Ten minutes later, Lily came back furious.
"Lily, you're breathing fire. What did Erin do this time?"
After a long string of obscenities, she finally replied, "I swear to God, one of these days I'm going to run her over."
I laughed out loud.
"Are you even taking me seriously? If you get back with her, not only will I quit, I'll run you over as well."
"Defensive as I always see." I said, trying to hold back the laughter "Anyway, I'm heading to the psychiatrist to meet mom and Volante. Has David arrived yet?" She nodded her head and walked out. I took one look in the mirror to make sure I didn't look like a love-struck geek. Satisfied with my appearance, I walked out of the office.
"Say hi to them for me, Arnie."
At least I was still on her good side.
"Will do Lil."
The next words out of my mouth I will probably regret for the rest of my life.
"Do you want to come over to my place for dinner later?"
I think she was as shocked as I was about what I said.
"Sure. I'll be over at around seven."
"That's good," I said, breathing a bit easier. "Can't wait," I said as I headed for the elevator.
"David, remind me to start looking for a place far away from this infuriating traffic."
David let out a small chuckle as I started my usual rant about traffic. I've known him since college, when he came between me and an atomic wedgie. Ever since, he's been like a bodyguard to me, making sure that I didn't end up in a situation that would require a good shower. And trust me, I had enough of those. Having one of the football players as your friend does come in handy, yet I was never fully accepted as one of the popular kids.
Thirty minutes later, I was sitting in Dr. Amberose's office. "Good afternoon Elias family. I have Volante's diagnosis back and it seems that she has ADHD." My mother and I looked confused, but Volante was on another planet.
"Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god. I have ADHD." After a slight pause she asked, "What's ADHD?"
As soon as she asked that, I knew that my life was about to change.
