Chapter 94

“Ask him?” The saleswoman was stunned. She looked at me in disbelief. I could see the astonishment in her eyes. It was clear that she did not think I could afford to buy a house. She might have even mistaken me for a bodyguard. Otherwise, she would not have looked so shocked. “Ms. Melson, can I ask about your relationship to him?” The saleswoman tried to find out about me. “Hoho, he’s just a junior who’s always bragging to me, saying that he can buy the most expensive house you have without blinking an eye. Let him purchase the property worth fifty million. There’s no need to give him a discount. He has nothing but money. My mother-in-law’s words were dripping with sarcasm. The saleswoman was quite the suck-up. She immediately understood our relationship from those short words. She smiled and looked at me. “Sir, the house that you’re looking at is priced at fifty-five million. Would you like to make the payment with a cheque or credit card?” She sounded respectful, but her eyes were filled with arrogance and glinted with a look of disdain for me. It was obvious that this was an attempt to expose me and curry favor with my mother-in-law. She was not treating me like a customer. In her heart, my mother-in-law was the real customer. I saw through her tactics and said with a sneer. “I’m your customer. Should you treat customers so arrogantly? Also, I’m feeling thirsty. Make me some coffee.” The saleswoman did not budge when she heard this. She gave me an insincere smile. “I’m sorry, but the coffee here is only for customers. You aren’t qualified to be served any.” “I’m not qualified?” I began to get angry. “Tell me, who is qualified, then?” “Anyone who can afford to buy our villas, of course. People of high society like Ms. Melson.” With that, she gave my mother-in-law a friendly smile. “Fine. Looking down on me, are you? You’ll regret this in a bit. I’ll take the villa. Draw up the contract for me,” I said with a cold smile. “What? You’re buying it?” The saleswoman was shocked. “That’s right. I’ll pay by card!” I said with determination. “Please give us your card before I draw up a contract for you.” The saleswoman did not believe I could make the purchase and was adamant about me showing her my credit card first. “Fine.” I reached into my pocket to take out the supreme black credit card from Stamen Bank. The card had no spending limits. It would not be an issue to make a fifty-million-dollar villa purchase. However, I was surprised when I reached into my pocket. There was no credit card inside. It was then that I remembered that the black credit card was in the clothes I had worn yesterday. The saleswoman looked like she understood something when she saw me unable to produce the credit card. She said tauntingly, “Sir, didn’t you claim I would regret it once you showed me your credit card? When can you show it to me?” “Well, I didn’t bring my card with me. Can you reserve the villa for me, and I’ll return in the afternoon to pay for it with my card?” I smiled and said in embarrassment. My mother-in-law could not help but burst into laughter when she heard this. “Freddie, if you don’t have any money, just have a clean break with my daughter. You can stop your pretense now.” “I’m not lying to you. I really did leave my credit card at home,” I replied with a bitter smile. “Why should we believe you? Do you think we were born yesterday? Or do you just think we’re so easily tricked? If you’re a real man, keep your promise and sign the divorce papers now.” With that, my mother-in-law passed me the divorce papers. I broke out in a cold sweat. I did not expect to make such a mistake at this crucial moment. I had to think quickly and figure out how to resolve this issue. Right at that moment, I spotted a sign by my side describing a new development called Scenic Villa. It was by the same developer of the villa I had bought for Yvette. An idea came to me. I said to the saleswoman, “Did you mention before that your general manager was around? Is his name Morris Xavier?” “That’s right. Why do you ask?” “Get him here. I know him, and he can prove that I can afford the villa,” I said with confidence. “I…” The saleswoman hesitated. “Don’t worry. I’m not a conman. You’ll find out the truth once he’s here. Hurry up and get him. Remember to let him know that my name is Freddie Lang!” Under my insistence, the saleswoman unwillingly went to get Morris. It was a few minutes later when Morris arrived hurriedly at the sales lobby in a suit. A big smile appeared on his face when he saw me. He extended his hand to shake mine. He was full of respect for me. My mother-in-law and the saleswoman were quite astonished to see that I really did know the general manager. However, I did not have time to enjoy this as I was worried that Morris would reveal my identity. I quickly said, “Morris, I believe you remember that we’ve met previously.” “Of course I do. What brings you here today, Mr. Cha… Lang?” Morris said with a smile. “I have my eyes on a villa of yours worth fifty million, but I forgot my credit card today. Could you help me reserve the villa, and I’ll pay for it later?” “Pay for it later?” Morris looked quite angry. “Are you kidding me?!” “That’s right. You must be kidding, Freddie! If you can’t afford it, don’t try to buy it. You’re just embarrassing yourself here.” My mother-in-law taunted me. Morris shook his head when he heard this. “Don’t misunderstand me, please. I wanted to say that it’s a huge honor for us that Mr. Lang is willing to stay at a property we developed. How could we sell this villa to you? You should have it for free!” “What???” My mother-in-law and the saleswoman were shocked. “Are you joking, Mr. Xavier? This villa is worth fifty million!!! We can offer him a discounted price, but we can’t just give it out for free!” “Do you have the right to speak on this? Get out of here, and draw up the contract.” “But…” “No buts. Just go!” Morris insisted. I was a little shocked myself when I heard Morris’ words. I knew he was trying to butter me up. No matter how much he might have wanted to give me the villa, it was still worth fifty million. I suspected he wanted from me. That was why I did not agree immediately. At this point, I said to Morris, “Mr. Xavier, let’s talk about the villa a little later. I need to use the washroom. Could you show me the way there?” “The washroom? Alright, follow me!” With that, Morris led me out of the lobby. … Once I was done with the washroom, I said to Morris, “Mr. Xavier, thank you for the gesture, but this villa is worth too much. I cannot accept it.” I expressed my thoughts to him clearly. Morris grew anxious when I rejected his offer. “Mr. Lang, please accept it. To be honest, I’m not giving you the villa entirely for free. There’s something I need your help with.” “What is it?” “Well, Scenic Group’s eight billion dollar loan from Stamen Bank is due soon. I hope you’ll be able to convince Mr. Quinn to extend the deadline for us. Please consider this villa as a gift of goodwill.” “I see…” I hesitated and said, “Thank you for the kind offer, Mr. Xavier, but I really can’t accept this villa. As for the loan, I can put in a good word for you to Vincent. However, I’ll still pay for the villa in two days.” “Alright.” Morris was a little dejected when I refused his offer. “Also, I hope this conversation can stay private. We’ll stick to the story of the villa being gifted to me. It’ll help me earn some respect from my mother-in-law.” “Noted. I’ll do my best to cooperate with you, Mr. Lang.” … When I returned to the lobby with Morris, I prepared to show off my new achievement to my mother-in-law with a big smile on my face. However, before I could say a word, she pointed at my nose and scolded me. “Lang, did you g**g up to put on a show for me? Just you wait. I won’t let you off so easily!” She seemed set on her own beliefs. She prepared to leave once she was done with her scolding. I quickly stopped her when I saw her about to leave. “Mom, you can leave now, but you have to keep your word. As long as I’m able to afford the villa, you can’t come between me and Layla.” “Hmph, if you want to take our surname, just go ahead, but don’t for a minute think that I’ll be nice to you!” With that, my mother-in-law left in a huff.
