Chapter 97

1737 Words
“Well…” I stammered. I had no idea how to explain my way out of this. “Please don’t ask me about who I am. The important thing is that I’m working hard on becoming an outstanding person so I’m worthy of you.” I was being sincere. I had inherited billions in fortune and was as rich as a country. If my identity was revealed, even the amazing Layla Owens would look at me differently. However, I could not do that. On one hand, it was because of the promise I had made to the board of directors. On the other hand, it was because I did not want our relationship to change. That would not be the kind of marriage I wanted. I did not want her to be with me because of money. I wanted to tame her, completely tame her, with just my sincerity and my actions. When the day that she was completely mine came, I would reveal my identity to her. “Ho, forget it if you don’t want to tell me. We’re in a contract marriage, anyway. Even though we may live under the same roof in the future, I still hope that you’ll keep strictly to the rules we’ve set.” “I will.” She did not continue questioning me, which made me feel greatly relieved. “By the way, Wifey, where’s your luggage? I’ll help you bring it upstairs.” “I didn’t bring anything,” Layla said. “Huh? Do you still have work?” I was slightly disappointed. “We need to film some additional scenes for the movie I’m working on before. I can only make it back after two or three more days. Don’t worry. Once I’m done, I’ll come back here. I won’t be leaving within the next half a year.” “In that case, bring the keys along with you. I’ll help you move in once you’re back.” “Alright, I’ll be going off then.” “I’ll see you out.” … I returned to the villa after I walked Layla out. However, I was not able to cheer up when looking at the empty villa. It was at that point that I realized that living in a huge villa would not bring me happiness. Happiness was living with someone you loved. I locked up the villa and prepared to leave. Right at that moment, Montana called me on the phone. This surprised me. I thought Nadia would be the first to call me. I did not expect it to be Montana. I happily picked up the call. “Hi, Montana. Did you have fun at home during semester break?” “Not really. Do you have time for a chat?” Montana sounded sad. “What’s wrong?” Montana’s state surprised me. I thought she would have a happier time at home now that she did not lack money and the headache that was her younger brother had been taken care of. I did not expect her to sound this way when I picked up her call. “It’s nothing. I’m just feeling unhappy. Just stay with me for a chat. Where are you now? Are you still in school?” Montana purposedly changed the topic of conversation, but the more she acted this way, the more worried I was. “Is your brother bullying you again? Or your stepfather?” “No, they’ve been treating me well. I just wanted to find someone to chat to. Chat with me for a while. Also, remember to help me water the few pots of plants in my room and open the windows for me. And another thing. If you find yourself a girlfriend someday, remember to let me know. I’ll help you make sure she’s a good fit.” “Montana, what’s going on with you?” The more she acted this way, the more I felt something was wrong. From what she was telling me, it sounded like she no longer wanted to be my girlfriend. “Stop asking questions. Just chat to me,” Montana said in low spirits. “Montana!!!” I suddenly roared. “Do you still think of me as a friend? If I’m still a friend to you, just tell me the truth. There’s nothing I can’t take care of in this world.” She went silent after I said this. It was quite a while before I heard her sobbing through the phone. I knew that I had not been fair, so I said in a gentle voice, “Don’t be mad, Montana. I didn’t shout at you on purpose. I was just worried. Just tell me if something is troubling you. I promise I’ll help you out.” “What should I do, Freddie? What should I do? I don’t want to get married! I don’t want to marry!” Montana burst out crying. It seemed like she could no longer control her emotions. “Don’t marry me if you don’t want to. I won’t force you to do anything,” I comforted her softly. “It’s not you that I’m marrying. My stepfather is forcing me to marry the son of the gambling den’s boss! He lost a lot of money there and now owes them a huge debt. The gambling den’s boss said that he would kill my family if I didn’t marry his son. I have no idea what to do now. I don’t want to get married, but I don’t want my mother to be hurt. I really have no idea what to do,” Montana sobbed as she said this. “Everything’s going to be fine. Don’t worry. You still have me. I have money.” I kept comforting Montana. “Freddie, you should stop helping me. You’ve helped me enough. You’ve given me so many gifts before this too. I don’t want my broken family to be a burden to you.” With that, she actually hung up on me. I listened to the buzz on the other end and suddenly panicked. I could tell from what she said that she had realized something. She seemed to have figured out that I was Gentle Heart. Even then, she was not willing to use my help. It was clear that it had to be a huge debt that her father owed. I felt bitter as I thought about it. I had wanted to help Montana out before, which led to me giving her gifts and helping her in secret. I thought I had been doing something good, but in reality… The money I had given her must have ended up in the gambling stepfather’s hands. He did not have money before this, which was why he had gambled with less. Now that he had money, he had gambled a lot, and thus, had lost a lot. I was filled with regret. I had not been helping her before. I had been hurting her. However, there was no point in regretting this now. The most important thing right now was to help Montana solve this problem. I quickly made a few calls to Montana, but all of them were rejected. In the end, she turned off her phone altogether. I was extremely anxious. I had no idea where she was. How was I supposed to save her? However, an idea suddenly flashed across my mind. I managed to think up a good plan. The contact details of my school’s teachers and students should be in the school’s files. I quickly made a call to Franklin. “How can I help you, Mr. Lang?” Franklin said with respect at the other end of the line. “I need your help to get the address of a student named Montana Bale right now. I need it quickly. Quickly, you understand?” “Alright! Wait a moment while I get someone to retrieve it.” Franklin immediately agreed. “Okay. Once you have it, send it to me immediately. Make it fast.” All of Montana’s information was sent to my phone a few minutes later. Her parents’ names and her family’s contacts and address were included. I checked the information and confirmed it as belonging to Montana. There was no mistake. However, I was worried about the fact that Montana lived at the end of the North side of the country, while the city I was in was situated at the end of the South side. I would need to cross the country to see her. It would take at least half a day to rush to her side. At the thought of this, I took out my phone and called Vincent. “Uncle Quinn, I need the fastest helicopter you can find. Can you help me contact someone? I’m at Scenic Villa in Lovers’ Bay.” “Alright. I’ll help you contact them now. But it’ll take at least half an hour for the helicopter to reach you. Would that delay you?” “No, it won’t. Just make it as fast as possible.” From Montana’s tone, I could tell that things were not especially urgent yet if she was still able to chat with me. There should still be time if I went to her now. I stood outside the sales center of Scenic Villa to wait for the helicopter’s arrival after speaking to Vincent. This was the only piece of land big enough for a helicopter to land. Scenic Villa was a luxury villa and served an exclusive clientele, so there were not many customers around. Thus, I did not mind hanging around. Rue noticed me. When she saw me waiting, she came up to me and quietly asked, “Mr. Lang, are you planning to leave? Why not let me give you a lift?” It was obvious that she wanted the opportunity to get closer to me. I coldly rejected her. “That’s not necessary.” “Mr. Lang, this is a pretty rural area here. If you insist on waiting here, you might not get a cab even if you stand here the entire day. Why not let me give you a lift?” Rue said in a friendly manner. “There’s no need to. I’m not taking a cab.” I had just said that when the loud whirring of a helicopter interrupted me from over my head.
