“Alright, I’ll accompany you there.”
It was half an hour later when I arrived at the hospital ward with Montana.
Montana had changed into a wedding dress to cheer her mother up.
When Mrs. Bale saw Montana’s wedding dress from her sick bed, happy tears flowed down her cheek in agitation.
“Good, good, good. I can go to heaven immediately now that I'm seeing you get married before I die. I have no regrets.”
“What are you talking about, Mum? Now that we have money, we’ll be able to cure your illness. I won’t let you die! I won’t allow you to die.” Tears dropped from Montana’s eyes as she said this.
“Be a good girl and don’t cry. This is a happy day. It won’t be nice for you to cry. Now, can you head out for a moment? I have something to say to your husband.”
“But, Mum, you…”
Montana was unwilling to leave, but I patted her shoulder gently. “Go on. I’m here. Don’t worry about it.”
“A-alright. Let me know immediately if there’s anything you need.”
Montana left with a slightly worried look on her face.
…
After Montana left, Mrs. Bale smiled at me from her bed. “The engagement party today must have been tiring for you, Freddie.”
“It wasn't really. Everything went smoothly,” I said with a chuckle. I did not want her to find out anything that might worry her.
“That’s my family out there, and I know very well what they can be like. Anyway, I should really thank you. Thank you for treating Montana so well. That girl grew up without a father, and the stepfather I got her turned out to be a scumbag. Even though she doesn't say anything about it, I know very well how she feels about marriage. It’s great that she met you.”
“I’m the lucky one because I met Montana, Mrs. Bale,” I said sincerely.
“There are a few things I need to say to you, Freddie,” Mrs. Bale said weakly.
“Go on, Mrs. Bale.”
“I can’t hold on any longer. Take Montana away with you after I’m gone. Don’t leave her in Shura City, and please don’t let the Carlsons continue taking advantage of her.”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Bale. I’ll do as you ask.”
“Another thing: even though I don’t have long to live and there’s no one in Montana’s family to protect her, don’t even think about bullying her. If you dare bully her, I won’t let you off even if I need to turn into a vicious ghost and come back to haunt you.”
She sounded quite weak at the beginning of her speech, but at the end, I could see veins popping on her face as she clenched tightly to the side of the bed as if about to turn into a vicious ghost on the spot.
The look on her face was frighteningly savage.
I jumped at that scary look and quickly replied, “Don’t worry, Mrs. Bale, I adore Montana. How could I bear to bully her?”
“That's good to know. Remember your promise to me today.” She stared straight at me as if trying to imprint every aspect of my face into her mind.
“I’ll make sure to remember it.” I nodded earnestly.
People always said that those on their deathbeds would be kind and sentinel.
However, it could have been because Montana was the one thing Mrs. Bale was worried about, but she was saying some frightening words.
“I didn’t mean to scare you on purpose, Freddie. I just want you to treat Montana well. If you treat her well, I’ll be sure to constantly pray for your blessing even after I’m gone.”
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Bale. I’ll make sure to treat her well. I swear to you.”
With that, I raised my palm above my head.
“That’s alright. There’s no need for you to swear on it. I believe you.”
She closed her eyes after that. The long talk must have tired her out quite a bit.
When I saw she was done, I said, “Rest well if you’re tired, Mrs. Bale. I’ll get Montana in here.”
…
Montana leaned in close to me after I walked out of the ward.
“What did my mum say to you, Freddie?”
“Nothing much. She just wanted me to treat you well,” I replied honestly. “I think she’s really tired right now and has fallen asleep. Why don’t you head in to have a look?”
“Alright, I’ll accompany my mum for a while. You should return to the hotel for some rest if you’re tired."
“You don’t need to worry about me. Just take care of your mum.”
…
After leaving the hospital, I was feeling a little down.
I had no idea why, but it could have been because I was missing my mother.
Growing up as an orphan in the orphanage made me feel like a parent's love was the greatest luxury in the world. I also knew it was something that I could never possess.
Even though Montana had an unreliable stepfather, her mother loved her. Even on the brink of death, her mind was only filled with thoughts of her daughter.
As for my parents, where were they?
I wanted to meet them, but at the same time, I was afraid to.
Did they abandon me because they were forced to, or had they never plannee on keeping me? I had no idea.
I had considered searching for them. With all the money and power I had right now, it would not be something difficult to do.
However, what would I even do if I managed to find them?
Nothing could make up for the lack of my parents' love in my life.
My heart felt empty at the thought.
I was feeling pretty tired, so I decided to return to the hotel for some rest.
Right then, a call came in for me.
“Hello, who is this?” I asked.
“How do you do, Mr. Lang? We're calling from the hotel’s front desk. There’s a lady here who claims to have found a diamond necklace of yours worth three million. She’d like to personally return it to you. We’re wondering when you'll be returning to the hotel?”
Diamond necklace?
I was a little puzzled. Montana had been wearing the necklace, right? How had it ended up with someone else?
Questions filled my mind as I wondered what that lady had up her sleeves.
Since I was on the way back to the hotel, I replied, “I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
“Alright. We’ll inform the lady to wait for you in front of your hotel room.”
…
After I hung up the call with the lady at the front desk, I returned to the hotel with all the questions still in my mind.
When I saw the woman waiting in front of my hotel room, I was stunned.
“Lina Holden. What are you doing here?”
The person waiting right in front of my room was none other than Lina, who I had met yesterday.
“You’re here, Freddie.” Lina looked at me with an expression of delight and coyness.
“You haven’t told me what you’re doing here yet,” I said coldly.
“Freddie, don’t you think it’s inappropriate for us to stand here chatting? Shouldn't you invite me in?” Lina said with a wide smile. She was acting really friendly with me as if we had been friends for many years.
I hesitated. However, I eventually decided to allow it as I opened my room door.
“Come on in and say what you have to say. And you can get out after that!”
Lina was not angered by my words. She sat on the bed and looked around my room. “This isn’t much of a room, Freddie. Why would you stay in such a lousy hotel when you’re rich?”
“It’s none of your business what sort of room I choose to stay in. Is there anything else? Get out if there’s nothing!”
“Don’t be so mad, Freddie. I know I shouldn’t have lied to you, but if I didn’t use the necklace as an excuse, the front desk would never have told me your room number. I’m here to sincerely apologize to you.”
“Apologize to me?”
“That’s right. I shouldn’t have humiliated you three months ago when you professed your love so sincerely to me. I made fun of you and humiliated you in front of everyone. That was terrible of me.”
“What difference is there between me and those arrogant rich second-generation heirs?”
“I've been living in guilt for the past few months, and I've been looking for a chance to apologize to you, but the opportunity never came up. Don’t worry, though, I have cut ties with those people and broken up with Young Master Logan.”
“So, what? What are you trying to say?” I sniggered at Lina’s performance.
“Freddie, what I have to say is very simple…”
At this point, she took out an iPhone from her clutch. “Do you remember this phone? You gave it to me that day, and it was thrown on the ground and broke. I took it back to fix it. If a broken phone can be fixed and work as good as new, doesn’t that mean our relationship can be salvaged as well?”
“Are you saying you want to be my girlfriend?” I sneered as I looked at Lina.
This woman had pretty good acting skills.
She had written such a great script for herself just to try and make up with me.
“That’s right. I want to be your girlfriend. I know you like me, and I like you too. It’s Young Master Logan’s fault for deceiving me by bad-mouthing you to me constantly. I was young and believed his words, which was I did so many hurtful things to you. But now, I’ve grown up and I’ve broken up with him.”
“So, what if I don't accept your apology?”
