CHAPTER 14

BRITTANY'S POV: "Goodbye, Josh. And please, don’t forget to pick me up on time," I said as I climbed out of the car. My driver gave me a small wave before driving off, leaving me standing at the school gate. Taking a deep breath, I adjusted my bag strap and walked towards my classroom. The day felt heavy already, and I wasn’t in the mood for surprises,, not after Alia’s stunt yesterday. When I got to the class, my eyes immediately fell on Mycseen. He was sitting in his usual spot, head bent over his phone. What was he always doing on that phone anyway? Scrolling endlessly, typing furiously, it was like the thing was glued to his hands. Well, not my business. Before I could sit down, I heard a familiar voice. "Hey, Britt!" I turned to see Dwayne walking into the class, her face lighting up with her usual warm smile. "Hi, Dwayne," I replied, smiling back as she pulled me into a hug. Her hugs always felt comforting, like she could chase away any bad mood. "How are you doing? I hope you're feeling better?" she asked, her tone soft but full of concern. "Yes, I’m fine. Although…" I hesitated for a second before adding, "Alia frightened me, but I’m good." Dwayne frowned but then nodded. "Don’t worry about Alia. I’ll handle her." Before I could respond, another voice chimed in. "Don’t worry about Alia, I’ll handle her," Mycseen said, not even looking up from his phone. I blinked, caught off guard. Was he serious? Was Mycseen, of all people, really going to do something about Alia? Nah, I highly doubted it. He was too busy with… whatever it was he always did. Besides, we weren’t even friends. The only reason he ever talked to me was because of Dwayne. "Uh… thanks," I replied awkwardly, not expecting a response. And, true to form, he didn’t say anything else. Dwayne suddenly stood up and walked to the back of the class. I tilted my head, watching her suspiciously. What was she up to now? "Hey, what are you doing?" I asked as I felt a warm hand on my neck. "Shush, girl. I’m doing something important," Dwayne said, her tone casual yet focused. "Dwayne, what important thing are you doing on my neck? Remember, it’s my neck, not yours," I protested, trying to swat her hand away. "Yeah, yeah, I know that. Now shush and let me finish," she replied, completely unfazed. Before I could argue further, Dawn walked over, curiosity all over her face. "Hey, twinzie, what are you doing?" Dawn asked, looking between Dwayne and me. "Shush your mouth and come this way," Dwayne said, beckoning her over. "What’s happening? And why is my neck tingling?" I asked, feeling completely lost. "Be quiet!" Dwayne and Dawn said in unison, their voices sharp and identical. So much for twins. Finally, Dwayne stepped back and clapped her hands together. "All done!" she announced triumphantly. I spun around to face her. "What did you do? What’s on my neck?" "Why don’t you see for yourself?" a deep voice said. I turned to see Mycseen holding out a small mirror. His expression was unreadable, but there was a slight smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. Taking the mirror from him, I glanced at my reflection, and froze. A golden chain sat perfectly on my neck, simple yet stunning. The soft gleam of the metal caught the light, making it look even more beautiful. "Wow…" I whispered, touching the chain gently. "Who is this from?" "Me," Mycseen said simply. I blinked, stunned. "You?" "Yes. It’s a compensation for what Alia said to you. You don’t deserve any of her shitty behavior," he replied, his voice calm but firm. I stared at him, completely speechless. Of all people, I never would’ve expected this from Mycseen. He smiled faintly and stood up, extending his arms slightly. Without thinking, I stepped forward and hugged him. Wait. What? I was hugging Mycseen?! Realizing what I’d just done, I quickly pulled back, my cheeks heating up. "Thanks," I mumbled, forcing a smile. "You’re welcome," he said casually, as if nothing had happened. He turned and walked out of the class, heading straight to James. "Awww," the class echoed behind me. No, no, no! This wasn’t happening. It was just a chain. That’s all it was. Nothing more. I went back to my seat, where Dwayne and Dawn were grinning like they’d just won the lottery. "That was so romantic," Dawn said dreamily. "Pfft. Really?" I scoffed, rolling my eyes. "It’s just a chain. Nothing romantic about it." "You did this, didn’t you?" I asked Dwayne suspiciously. "Nope. I had nothing to do with it," she replied, raising her hands in mock innocence. "Whatever," I muttered, turning away. "Everyone saw that. Including Alia," Dwayne teased. "Stop it, Dwayne," I said, glaring at her. "Speaking of Alia…" Dawn’s voice trailed off as her eyes shifted to the doorway. I turned and froze. There she was, standing at the door, her expression a mix of anger and frustration. Her eyes burned with something dangerous as she stared straight at me. What now?
