THE VOICE IN THE ASH

1772 Words
The Ashen Crown rose from the wasteland like a skull half-buried in the earth. Sunny stopped walking. He had been walking for three days, through the Wastes, through the ruins, through the bones of a dead world. He had seen nothing but dust and stone. Nothing but death. But this was different. The Ashen Crown was massive—larger than Ember, larger than anything he had ever seen. Its walls were black, cracked, covered in symbols that glowed with faint light. At its center, a tower rose into the sky, impossibly tall, impossibly ancient. And it was calling to him. The light in his body pulsed in rhythm with the glow of the walls. It was pulling him forward, drawing him toward the tower. Sunny walked through the gates. --- Inside, the city was dead. Buildings crumbled. Streets cracked. There was no sign of life—no people, no animals, no plants. Just dust and silence and the faint hum of the glowing symbols. Sunny moved through the ruins, his hand on his blade. He didn't know what he was looking for. But he knew he would know it when he found it. He found it in the center of the city. A figure sat on a throne made of ash. Old. Ancient. His skin was the color of stone, his eyes burned like coals. He wore robes that had once been white but were now gray with dust. "You came," the figure said. His voice was like grinding stone. "You sent for me." "I did." The figure gestured to the ground before him. "Sit. We have much to discuss." --- Sunny didn't sit. He stood, his hand on his blade. "Who are you?" "A friend." The figure smiled. "Or an enemy. It depends on what you do next." "That's not an answer." "It's the only answer I can give." The figure leaned forward. "You destroyed one of the spirits. The Ember Fist. You did it with the ritual. You sacrificed part of yourself to save your city." "How do you know that?" "I know many things." The figure paused. "I know you carry the light of the Ember Fist inside you. I know it's burning you from the inside. I know you don't have much time." Sunny's blood ran cold. "What do you mean?" "The ritual didn't destroy the spirit. It merged it with you. You are the prison now." The figure's eyes burned brighter. "The light will consume you. In a month, maybe two. Then you'll die." --- Sunny felt the world tilt. "I'm dying?" "Slowly. Painfully. The light will eat away at your soul until there's nothing left." The figure paused. "But there is a way to stop it." "Tell me." "The other spirits. The ones who were sealed before the Ember Fist. They're waking. They're breaking free. If you can find them, if you can absorb their power, you can stabilize the light inside you." "Absorb them? How?" "The same way you absorbed the Ember Fist. The ritual. The sacrifice." The figure paused. "But each spirit you absorb will make you stronger. And weaker. The more power you take, the more the light will consume you." "That doesn't make sense." "It's a balance. The spirits are part of a whole. The world was broken when they were separated. The only way to heal it is to bring them back together." "Bring them back together? In me?" "Yes." Sunny stared at him. "You're asking me to become a vessel for the spirits. To let them inside me. To risk losing myself entirely." "I'm asking you to save the world." --- The figure stood. His robes fell away, revealing a body covered in scars. Symbols carved into his skin. A crown of ash on his head. "I was the first," he said. "The first martial artist. The first to bond with a spirit. I've been watching for a thousand years. Waiting for someone strong enough to finish what I started." "Finish what?" "Free them. All of them. And then destroy them." He paused. "Including me." Sunny stared at him. "You want me to kill you?" "I want you to save the world. And I am part of the problem." The figure smiled. "Do we have a deal?" Sunny was silent for a long moment. He thought about Ember. About Kaycee. About Zora. About everything he had built. "I don't have a choice," he said. "There's always a choice." "Not for me." The figure nodded. "Then let's begin." --- The training started immediately. The figure—he called himself the Ash King—pushed Sunny harder than anyone ever had. They fought in the ruins, day and night. The Ash King was fast, stronger than Kael, more skilled than anyone Sunny had faced. "You're holding back," the Ash King said, blocking a punch. "I'm not." "You are. You're afraid of the light inside you. You're afraid of what it will do." He struck, sending Sunny flying. "Fear is the enemy. You must embrace the power." Sunny rose. Blood dripped from his mouth. "I don't know how." "You do. You've done it before. When you fought Kael. When you performed the ritual." The Ash King circled him. "Let go. Stop fighting it." Sunny closed his eyes. He felt the light inside him—burning, pulsing, consuming. He stopped resisting. He let it flow. The power exploded through him. His body glowed. His eyes burned. He attacked. The Ash King smiled. "There he is." --- They fought for hours. Sunny's power grew with every exchange. The light inside him stabilized, controlled. He could feel the Ember Fist responding to his will, not consuming him. But it came at a cost. Every time he used the power, he felt a piece of himself slip away. A memory. A feeling. A part of his soul. The Ash King noticed. "You're losing yourself," he said. "I know." "You need to anchor yourself. Find something to hold onto. Something that reminds you of who you are." Sunny thought about Kaycee. About Zora. About his father. "I have something." "Then hold onto it. And never let go." --- That night, Sunny sat alone in the ruins. He thought about Ember. About the people he had left behind. About the promise he had made to Zora. He pulled out his father's prayer beads. They were worn smooth, warm from his touch. He rubbed them between his fingers, remembering. "Revenge is a poison, son. It will eat you alive if you let it." "I know, father," Sunny whispered. "I know." --- The Ash King approached. "There's something I need to tell you," he said. "What?" "The spirits you need to find. They're not in this world. They're in the space between—a place called the Veil." "How do I get there?" "There's a door. In the temple beneath the Ashen Crown." The Ash King paused. "But it's guarded." "By what?" "By the first spirit. The one who broke the world. He's been waiting for someone to come. Someone strong enough to face him." Sunny stood. "Then let's go." --- The temple was beneath the tower. It was dark, ancient, filled with symbols that glowed with the same light as Sunny's body. At the center, a door. It pulsed with dark energy, whispering promises of power. "The Veil," the Ash King said. "Beyond this door, you'll find the spirit. You'll find the power. You'll find the truth." "What truth?" "The truth about who you are. About what you're meant to be." The Ash King paused. "About the blood in your veins." Sunny looked at him. "What do you mean?" "You're not just the son of the Iron Fist. You're not just a man seeking revenge." The Ash King's eyes burned. "You're the descendant of the first martial artist. My blood runs through your veins. My power. My curse." Sunny stared at him. "You're my ancestor." "I am." "And you want me to—" "I want you to finish what I started. I want you to free the spirits. I want you to destroy them." The Ash King paused. "I want you to die so that the world can live." --- Sunny opened the door. Darkness swallowed him. He fell through nothingness, through silence, through cold. He fell for seconds, minutes, hours. He didn't know. He didn't care. Then he landed. He stood in a gray void. No sky. No ground. No anything. Just gray. And in the gray, a shape moved. It was massive. Larger than the tower. Larger than the city. Its eyes were black suns. Its mouth was a cavern of teeth. "Welcome," it said. "I've been waiting for you." Sunny drew his blade. "Who are you?" "I am the first. The father of spirits. The breaker of worlds." It smiled. "And you, little one, are my heir." It attacked. --- The fight was unlike anything Sunny had experienced. The spirit was everywhere and nowhere. Its attacks came from all sides. Its power was overwhelming. Sunny fought with everything he had—the Ember Fist, the training from the Ash King, the rage that had driven him for years. But it wasn't enough. The spirit caught him. Held him. Its power poured into him—dark, cold, infinite. Sunny screamed. His soul burned. His mind shattered. And then— A voice. "Hold on." Kaycee. "Don't you dare give up." Zora. "We're with you." Evado. "Always." Francisco. Sunny grabbed the voices. He held them close. He remembered who he was. Why he fought. What he loved. He pushed back. --- The spirit screamed. Sunny's light exploded outward, driving into the darkness. The spirit recoiled, its form flickering, cracking. "You can't—" "I can." Sunny drove his fist into the spirit's core. "I am the son of the Iron Fist. I am the heir of the Ash King. I am the vessel of the Ember Fist." He pulled. The spirit's power flowed into him—cold, dark, infinite. But he held it. Controlled it. Absorbed it. The spirit screamed one last time. And then it was gone. --- Sunny woke on the floor of the temple. The Ash King was there, helping him up. "You did it. You absorbed the first spirit." Sunny stood. His body glowed with a new light—darker, colder, but stable. He felt different. Stronger. But also... less. "One down," he said. "How many more?" "Four. The five spirits must be united. Then you can destroy them." "And then?" "And then you'll be free." Sunny looked at him. "And you?" The Ash King smiled. "I'll be the last. And then I'll be gone."
