Ember was burning, and Sunny had been gone for three weeks.
He saw the smoke from the Wastes—dark columns rising into the gray sky. He saw the fires flickering in the distance, the glow of something wrong. He ran the last mile, his body screaming, the new power inside him pulsing with cold fire.
The gates were open. The streets were empty.
And the Tiger compound was under siege.
---
Sunny didn't stop to think. He charged through the gates, past the barricades, into the courtyard. Bodies lay everywhere—Tiger guards, Boar soldiers, Phoenix warriors. The air was thick with the smell of blood and smoke.
A group of armed men stood in the center of the courtyard. They weren't wearing family colors. They were mercenaries—hard-faced, scarred, their weapons still dripping.
"Where is he?" one of them demanded. He was holding Kaycee by the throat.
Kaycee was bloody, beaten, but alive. His eyes found Sunny's across the courtyard.
"Right here," Sunny said.
---
The fight was short.
Sunny moved faster than he ever had. The power of the absorbed spirits flowed through him—cold, precise, devastating. He broke the first mercenary's arm, drove his fist through the second's chest, and caught the third by the throat before he could scream.
"Who sent you?" Sunny demanded.
The mercenary spat blood. "You think this changes anything? You think you're the only one with power?"
"Answer the question."
"The Crane family. They've united the others. They're coming for you. All of you." The man laughed. "You're already dead. You just don't know it yet."
Sunny tightened his grip. "Where's Francisco?"
"Gone. They took him."
"And Evado?"
The mercenary smiled. "The assassin? He's the one who let us in."
---
Sunny dropped the body and ran to Kaycee.
"Are you alright?"
"I've been better." Kaycee wiped blood from his face. "Sunny—Evado—"
"I heard."
"It's not true. It can't be true. He's been with us since the beginning."
"I know." Sunny helped him up. "Where's Zora?"
"Safe. She took the elders to the Deep Market when the attack started." Kaycee paused. "But Sunny, there's something else. Something worse."
"What?"
"The Crane family. They're not just attacking us. They're attacking everyone. The Boars. The Phoenixes. The Serpents. They're trying to take control of the whole city."
"The council—"
"Dead. Or captured. Most of them, anyway." Kaycee looked at him. "Ember is at war. And we're losing."
---
Sunny found Zora in the Deep Market.
She was guarding a group of elders—old men and women who had survived the initial attacks. Her blades were bloodied. Her face was hard.
"You're back," she said.
"I'm back."
"I told you not to take too long."
"I know." Sunny looked at the elders. "How bad is it?"
"The Crane family has three thousand soldiers. Maybe more. They've taken the Spire District. The Mid-Levels are contested. The Lower Quarter is a war zone." Zora paused. "They're calling themselves the Ashen Army. They say they're fighting for the old ways. For the families."
"They're fighting for power."
"Of course they are. But people believe them. They're afraid. They want someone to blame." Zora looked at him. "You."
---
Sunny sat with his council—what was left of it.
Kaycee. Zora. A handful of elders. A few loyal guards. They gathered in a small chamber beneath the Deep Market, surrounded by darkness and fear.
"Where is Evado?" Sunny asked.
No one answered.
"I need to know. If he betrayed us, I need to know."
"He didn't betray us." Zora's voice was sharp. "I've known Evado for years. He's not a traitor."
"He let the mercenaries in."
"He was captured. They tortured him. Made him talk." Zora paused. "Or they used him. There's a difference."
"How do you know?"
"Because I know him. He's not the kind of man who breaks easily. If he helped them, there was a reason."
Sunny thought about it. Zora was right. Evado had proven his loyalty. He had risked his life for Sunny more than once. If he had helped the Crane family, there had to be a reason.
"Find him," Sunny said. "Bring him back. I need to hear his side."
"And if he's guilty?"
"Then I'll deal with it."
---
The next days were chaos.
Sunny fought alongside his people, defending the Deep Market, pushing back the Ashen Army. The power inside him grew with every battle—the spirits lending him strength, speed, endurance. But it came at a cost.
He was losing pieces of himself.
A memory. A feeling. A fragment of who he was. Each time he used the power, something slipped away.
Kaycee noticed.
"You're different," he said one night, after a particularly brutal fight.
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine. You're fading." Kaycee grabbed his arm. "I've seen it before. Soldiers who've seen too much. Fighters who've lost too much. They start to disappear. They become something else."
"I'm still me."
"Are you?"
Sunny looked at him. He wanted to argue. He wanted to say that he was the same man Kaycee had found in that gutter. But he couldn't. Because he wasn't.
"I have to do this," Sunny said. "I have to absorb the spirits. I have to save the city."
"And what happens when there's nothing left of you?"
"Then at least the city survives."
---
Zora found Evado three days later.
He was in a cell beneath the Spire District—the Crane family's stronghold. He had been tortured. His face was swollen, his body covered in cuts and burns. But he was alive.
"You came for me," he whispered.
"Always." Zora cut his bonds. "Can you walk?"
"I can try."
She helped him up. They moved through the tunnels, avoiding guards, until they reached the Deep Market.
Sunny was waiting.
"Evado."
"I didn't betray you." Evado's voice was raw. "They had my sister. They threatened to kill her if I didn't help them."
"Your sister?"
"She's alive. She's been in the Spire District for years. I didn't know. They found her. They used her against me." Evado's eyes were wet. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
Sunny was silent for a long moment. Then he said, "Where is she now?"
"I don't know. They moved her after the attack. I don't know where."
"We'll find her." Sunny put a hand on his shoulder. "I promise."
---
The war continued.
Sunny led his people through the tunnels and back alleys of Ember, striking at the Ashen Army, disrupting their supply lines, freeing prisoners. The power inside him grew. The light pulsed. The darkness spread.
He was becoming something else. Something more.
But he held onto the memories. Kaycee's laughter. Zora's touch. His father's voice. He held onto them like a drowning man holds onto a rope.
One night, a messenger arrived at the Deep Market.
"A woman," the messenger said. "She says she has information. About the Crane family. About their plans."
"Who is she?"
"She wouldn't give her name. But she said you would know her."
Sunny went to the entrance.
The woman was waiting in the shadows. When she stepped into the light, Sunny felt his blood run cold.
Norah.
Francisco's first love. The woman who had betrayed him.
"I know why you're here," Sunny said.
"I'm here to help."
"You betrayed Francisco. You sold him out to his rivals. Why would I trust you?"
Norah smiled. It was a sad expression. "Because I'm not the same person I was. And because I know something you don't."
"What?"
"The Crane family has Francisco. They're going to execute him tomorrow. And the only way to save him is to give them what they want."
"What do they want?"
Norah looked at him. "You."
