I woke up again in the hospital, surrounded by blinding white light. For a moment, I thought I had gone to heaven.
But unfortunately, I was still alive, with Leo beside me. His happiness was clear when he saw that I was awake.
"Shirley, you're finally awake! How are you feeling right now? I can call the doctor if you need anything."
I didn't respond, and I could see a flicker of anger in his eyes. But he held it back, likely because of how weak I looked.
"Shirley, you really need to behave yourself. Haven't you suffered enough?"
Suffered? All my suffering came from you, didn't it?
Just then, a doctor walked in, announcing, "Family of Shirley Thompson, please step out for a moment."
Leo finally stepped away, and I allowed my thoughts to drift.
I couldn't understand the purpose of my life. My parents had died young. My partner had betrayed me. I had lost my child. I was violated by several men. Was my only role in this world to be deserted again and again?
I didn't need a doctor's diagnosis to know that my body was in rough shape. A faint ache in my stomach reminded me of everything I had endured.
When Leo returned, he looked somewhat sad. The doctor had likely given him bad news.
I didn't want to face him. "I'm tired. Go out."
He was glad that I spoke, and his voice softened. "Shirley, I won't bother you. I'll just stay here and keep watch over you, okay?"
Whatever. I was truly exhausted and didn't want to deal with anything anymore.
