Mason defeated Lord Naphtaloz earlier only because he was a lot more aware both physically and mentally. He hadn't previously battled the destroyer of universes. Mason's only high profile duels have come against Lord Naphtaloz. Prior to that, he'd been using his powers to capture robbers, save fire victims, rescue passengers from dangling buses and so on and so forth - all being tasks that provided no real tests for his abilities.
