Chapter One: How they all met
I left the park in Ocho Rios, in the evening I started walking home after I started walking up the hill when I heard a strange noise. I was curious on where the sound was coming from, I released that the sound is coming from up ahead after I bended the corner I saw a vehicle up ahead with the head-lights on. The doors wide open, at first, I thought they was you know having s*x, turns out that he was r****g her. I remembered that another path heading down, the hill. I walked down the hill, stopped right under them.
…..
It was a cold morning in the first of February in 2016, I yawned but I didn't wake up. My alarm went off at 6:30a.m., I got up and I went through my daily morning routines. I attend Bustamante Academy high School, I’m 6’1. I’m sixteen years old, my favorite subjects are English, Maths. Bustamante Academy high School is a private school, we wear black and white school uniform. I arrived at school around 7:30a.m., Bustamante high school was built in 1965. By a descendant of Bustamante, he was our first principal. Their motto is “Teach our students, who will become successful workers of the future.” It's a big campus, I got searched then I went on my grade block which is C, School starts at 8:30a.m., We walked to the Auditorium for devotion. I joined my grade line, at devotion we would sing songs, then we would pray and then the principal whom I heard was only being principal eight months before I started attending Bustamanti. After devotion we would head to our classes, there I saw Paul and John in class talking to Tom and Matthew. That was an unusual sight because Tom and Matthew usually avoid talking to us. Plus they are also in our class, Tom is 6’4 and Matthew is 5’9. As I approached, I realized they were talking about girls.
Tom and Matthew are among the popular sect at school. They are those guys who get all the hot girls. They know what to say, when to say it, and how to approach just about any girl to get her to do their bidding. They think every guy on campus wants to be like them, but they don't hear what is whispered about them behind their backs. I didn't want that level of corruption seeping into my life or the life of my friends.
A girl walks in, pulling the attention of everyone. Paul acts normal, as if she means nothing to him. But we knew the truth. She was one of Paul's girls; one of many, who thought she was the only one. Paul pretends as if he doesn't see her sending smooches his way. He pretends as if he doesn't hear the guys jeering him for being a hortical galis. He was a real dawg, but he takes offence at being called that. He hates it actually. He has been to the principal's office a few times because of that one word. The girl walks over, with both hands-on Paul's shoulder signaling ownership. Paul shifts a little in his seat, not quite comfortable with that gesture in such a public place. I stifle a laugh at his discomfort.
I watched as she smiled, and kissed him on his cheek. He got up and he took her hand, they were about to leave but before they left, he told us that he was turning in his galist card. I smiled because he won't do it, he always have a girl on the side, John suggested that Paul should turn it over to him. The guys laughed; I cleared my throat because I already knew that you can't turn in your galist card. Give it to someone else, and you can't make someone a galist they have to be made galist, after they left, I knew that John wanted to be popular and a galist I told him to get new friends if he wanted to be popular.
I remember the first day that I met Paul in grade four, he was always a galist even back then. But he was also worst back then too, he got better since I became his friend.
And from that day on Paul got better at it, even better than me. I never told him, that I had a sister who I get tips from about girls every now and then and I added it to what I already knew about girls. And now on to John, we met him in grade eight, he was being bullied by two boys. Paul went over to settle it, and to stop them from bulling him. We ended up in the principal’s office along with the two bullies, the bullies got 8 weeks suspension. I and Paul got three weeks suspension; we left the principal’s office.
A girl brushed by me, said she’s sorry, that’s when I recognized her voice, she used to be Paul’s girlfriend. I saw her and Paul talking, then I saw her hug, John. I gave him two thumps up, John smiled and he hugged her back. They left the class together; our teacher entered our class. Paul’s girl went back to her class.
I remembered Paul telling me how he and Amy met, they met at the library in St. Ann’s Bay. Amy went to the library to do her assignment, and Paul had said that he went there to burrow a book. I scoffed when he said that, but I didn’t say anything. Amy also mentioned that he helped her print her assignment, I remember John mention that Paul is a hero.
My sister Elizabeth Chase, she’s shy around guys. And she finds it really hard to make friends, I remembered asking her one time how’d she became friends with Sharika, Tash, Tasha. Elizabeth told me that she met Sharika in grade 5, at lunchtime. According to Elizabeth Sharika isn’t afraid to make new friends, she’s 5’5 kinda on the shabby side. She’s a little weird, Elizabeth mentioned that Sharika was already friends with Tash and Tasha. I remember asking Elizabeth if they accepted her, I remember Elizabeth saying that it took three days before Tash accepted her as her friend. It took Tasha three weeks before she accepted my sister as her friend.
I used to attend youth group with my sister, ever Friday evening. That’s where I met Brittany Smith, it took me a week before we became friends. She’s one of the friendliest girls, I’ve ever met, we dated for a little while.
Jodian Gooden, we met in grade 7 at Bustamante high school, we dated for about three months. We spent every day together; I didn’t have time to hang with Paul. I had a little feeling that Paul was glad that I and Jodian broke up.
…..
I stayed there until I hear the door opened and closed, I ran back up and I saw it reversing until it made a U-turn. I remembered that I had my phone in my hand and I took a photo of the license plate number, before it drove off. I got up I ran up to her, I took out my phone turned on my flashlight. I didn't shine it on her face, just from her neck to her legs, I saw that we attended the same high school. I sighed, and I searched for her phone but instead of calling the police I whatsapped her father. I dropped the phone beside her and I ran away from the scene.
On Monday I got searched before I entered through the school gate, I ran into Brittany before I reached my class. I asked, “Were yu waiting for mi?”
“Not really, just have one question?”
“Wat is yu question?”
“How come yu didn’t tell John to go after mi?”
“I forget how word spreads in this place,” I thought. “He shut yu done remember.”
“Okay, later.”
Lunch time came, I and my friends went for lunch we met Amy on the way to the cafeteria. We started walking back to our class, I heard my phone beeped. I ignored it, We walked past a few kids. We heard them talking about a girl who got r***d.
“Wat do we want to do.”
“Split up, try and find out more about this girl who got raped.”
I headed up the staircase, with my lunch I ran into Tom. He walked by me; I kept walking I passed a couple of kids on the block in conversations. I heard one of them saying, “I hear that some girl from our school got raped.”
I stopped and asked, “Wait wat yu say?”
“That a girl from our school got raped.”
“Do yu know who this girl—”
“Nope it’s just wat I heard.”
I nodded my head, and I whispered, “I need to find Brittany.”
I found her at the library and asked, “So wat do yu, know?”
“About the girl who got r***d?”
“Yes.”
“Wat make yu think that I would know?”
“Come on we both know that yu know.”
“Okay, all I know is that girl is in our grade. That’s all, except I found out that four girls didn’t come to school today.”
“And yu think that one of these four girls got r***d?”
“Yes, so yu want to know more?”
“Nope I’d find out tonight,” I thought. “Nope, I try not to listen to rumors.”
“Okay Michael.”
I left the library and I went to my class and I had my lunch.
Later that evening, I went to my sister’s room. I opened the door, before I could say anything. Elizabeth said, “Come on in, take a seat.”
“So sis wats up?”
