CHAPTER ONE
Latoya’s pov I grabbed the steering wheel tightly as I pushed through the heavy traffic of Chicago. The lights from the streets illuminated the raindrops on the windshield as it was a perfect mirror to the turmoil growing inside me. I exhaled, my fingers trembling. Tonight was supposed to be the night that gives me a fresh start. A night that I had worked tirelessly to build but I had an unease that came back to haunt me. I pulled up at the underground packing lot of Sloth enterprise where I worked as senior customer care service executive. The big glass building towered over me. I looked at it and remembered how I had fought tooth and nail to be here. After years of struggles and hardship, here I was—a stable job. That allowed me to provide for my children. But no matter how far I run away from the past, it always seems to catch up with me. I took a deep breath before I stepped out of the car. I adjusted my jacket, as I took a glance at myself in the side mirror. The exhaustion in my eyes was evident but thanks to makeup, I could mask it very well. I stepped into the building, the familiar sound of different people talking and walking surrounded me. The company was bustling as their polished shoes kissed the marble floors. The scent of freshly brewed coffee was in the air. I had a little smile on my face as my legs carried me to the executive elevator. I pushed the elevator button with only one destination in my mind—Jack Sloth’s office. Jack Sloth is the CEO of Sloth's enterprises and he is also a rich billionaire who is both respected and feared in the business world. He is known for his ruthless and cold behavior but beneath all that hardness I had the chance of seeing someone different—something different. A man who despite his arrogance and pride had actually been so kind to me. A man who, beyond all the odds, had fallen for me. As the elevator door slid open, I stepped into the lavish corridor leading to his office. His personal assistant, Melissa, gave me a smile and a little wave. She pointed to the heavy door behind her, indicating I was free to enter. “He is expecting you….” Melissa said. I nodded my head as I straightened my dress before I pushed the door open. Jack was standing by the window which was reaching the ceiling, his hands in his pocket as he gazed at the busy city of Chicago. The dim light gave vision to his sharp facial angles- his broad and chiseled chest. He had a commanding aura which choked up any room he stepped into. “Latoya…” he called without turning back, his deep voice echoing all around the office. It was laced with something, something I couldn’t quite put my finger on. I swallowed hard, “Hmmmm…..You wanted to see me?” He turned to me, his eyes scanning me with some hint of intensity, “You left work early, yesterday.” I shifted slightly, trying to compose myself “Yes, I did. Donny had a fever and I…..” His eyes softened for a bit, “Is he okay now?” I gave a slight nod, “Yes, yes he is. Thank you for asking.” Jack studied me for a while before he walked to his desk. He picked up a crystal glass of whiskey, taking a slow sip. “Latoya…..” he called me, making me a little nervous, “You know how much I value honesty.” I stiffened, my fingers curling at the side of my dress. I knew where this was going. “There is something about you.” He continued with a hint of danger in his tone, “something you are hiding.” My heart was pounding so hard on my rib cage, “Hmmmm….I don’t know what you are talking about.” I said with a natural expression. He placed the glass down on his table, as he leaned in on the desk, his arms crossed, “ I have been patient and I have given you enough time. I need to know everything, Latoya. I don’t like secrets.” I swallowed hard. I had been honest about Donny. I had also told him my history with Henry and how I struggled but I had not told him about one tiny little detail—Renny! It wasn't because I wanted to keep lying to him but I was scared of the outcome. It was all too messy and shameful. Two children from different men! I took a deep breath, “Jack, I told you everything already—everything that matters.” “Everything that matters to you….what about me, Latoya?” He asked me. For a while it was silent. The tension in the air was so thick it could be cut through with a pair of scissors. Finally Harry stood up as he walked up to me, his fingers slowly brushing my face. “I want to marry you, Latoya.” My breath hitched. He stepped closer, “I want you by my side, for life but……..but I need to know if I can trust you…..Completely” My lips parted and my mind was spinning. Marriage? That was the last thing on my mind. I had not expected it—not yet and surly not like this. “Jack….I” Before I could complete the statement, a knock came from the door. The door opened and Melissa stepped into the office with hesitation written on her face. “Hmmm, sir, sorry for the interruption but hmmm there is something you need to see.” Jack frowned, “and what is it?” Melissa hesitated, glancing at me before focusing on Jack. "It's about the Smith account, sir. They're threatening to pull out unless we meet their new demands." Jack’s expression turned icy. "What demands?" Melissa handed him a folder. "They want us to lower our prices by 20% and provide additional services at no extra cost." Jack scanned the documents, his jaw clenched. "This is unacceptable. Get Smith on the phone. I'll handle this myself." Melissa nodded and quickly exited the office. Jack turned to me, his eyes still flashing with anger. "I'm sorry, Latoya. It seems our conversation will have to wait." I nodded, feeling a mix of relief and anxiety. "It's okay, Jack. I understand." He walked me to the door, his hand on the small of my back. "We'll continue this conversation soon. Very soon." I smiled, trying to hide my unease. "I'm looking forward to it." As I left the office, I couldn't shake the feeling that my life was about to change in ways I couldn't control.
