CHAPTER FOURTEEN: A Heart Worth Fighting For Lila Morning sunlight poured through my bedroom window, but I was already awake. I couldn't stop thinking about yesterday. The dance. The training. The way Alcaide had looked at me after I blocked Captain Aria's attack. He had smiled as though I had accomplished something extraordinary. No one had ever looked proud of me before. A gentle knock sounded at my door. "Lady Lila?" Martha entered carrying breakfast. "You seem happier today." Lila smiled shyly. "Do I?" "You've been smiling since you woke up." Heat rushed to my cheeks. "I didn't realize." Martha chuckled. "I think our King would be very pleased to hear that." Before Lila could answer, another knock came. A young guard bowed respectfully. "Lady Lila, His Majesty requests your presence in the royal stables." "The stables?" The guard nodded. "Immediately." --- A short while later... Lila arrived at the royal stables. The scent of fresh hay filled the air. Magnificent horses stood proudly inside polished wooden stalls. Some were pure white. Others were midnight black. One beautiful silver mare calmly approached Lila, nudging her hand. Lila laughed softly. "Hello." "They like you." She turned. Alcaide stood leaning against the stable door, dressed simply in a black shirt, dark trousers, and riding boots. Without his royal robes, he looked less like a king and more like the young man hidden beneath the crown. "You wanted to see me?" He nodded. "I thought today we could leave the palace for a while." Lila looked surprised. "Leave?" "We won't go far." "I've been keeping you surrounded by guards and walls." "I think you deserve to breathe." She smiled. "I'd like that." Alcaide led her to the silver mare. "Her name is Moon." "She's beautiful." "She can also be stubborn." Lila laughed. "I think we'll get along." Alcaide smiled. "I suspected as much." --- A few minutes later... Lila stood nervously beside the horse. "I've never ridden before." "I know." "I'm going to fall." "You won't." "How can you be so sure?" "Because I'll be with you." Before she could protest, Alcaide gently lifted her onto the saddle. She gasped in surprise. The world suddenly seemed much higher. "I don't like this." "You will." "I definitely won't." He laughed. "I give it five minutes." She frowned playfully. "I give it thirty seconds." He mounted the horse behind her. His arms reached around her to take the reins. Lila froze. She could feel the warmth of his chest against her back. Her heart raced uncontrollably. "So..." He said quietly. "Still afraid?" "Very." "I've got you." Those three words somehow chased away her fear. The horse began walking slowly along a quiet forest path. Sunlight filtered through the trees while birds sang overhead. For the first time in many days... Lila felt completely at peace. She didn't notice the shadow watching them from deep within the forest. A pair of crimson eyes followed every movement. The enemy had not stopped hunting. They were simply waiting for the perfect moment. Lila The forest opened into a peaceful meadow bathed in warm afternoon sunlight. Wildflowers stretched across the field like a colorful blanket, swaying gently in the breeze. A narrow stream wound through the grass, its crystal-clear water sparkling beneath the golden light. Alcaide guided Moon to a stop before climbing down. He reached up and held out his hands. "Come on." Lila smiled nervously. "I still think I'm going to fall." "You won't." She placed her hands in his, and he lifted her effortlessly from the saddle. As her feet touched the ground, she slipped on the soft grass. "Oh!" Before she could fall, Alcaide wrapped an arm around her waist. For a heartbeat, neither of them moved. Lila looked up into his deep blue eyes, her cheeks warming as she realized how close they were. "You really do have a habit of falling," he teased. She laughed softly. "I think the ground just likes me." "Fortunately," he replied with a smile, "I like catching you." His words sent a flutter through her chest. Reluctantly, he let her go, and together they walked toward the stream. Lila knelt beside the water and dipped her fingers into it. She gasped immediately. "It's freezing!" Alcaide chuckled as he crouched beside her. "When Xander and I were children, he used to push me into this stream every summer." Lila turned to him in disbelief. "The future Alpha King was pushed into a river?" "Repeatedly." She burst into laughter. "I wish I could have seen that." "I don't." He shook his head dramatically. "It would have destroyed my reputation." Her laughter echoed across the meadow. For a long moment, Alcaide simply watched her. This was the first time he had seen her laugh so freely. There was no fear in her eyes. No sadness. Just happiness. "You've changed." Lila looked at him. "You said that before." "I know." "But seeing you like this..." He smiled. "It reminds me how far you've come." She lowered her gaze. "I still have a long way to go." "We all do." They sat together on the soft grass, listening to the gentle sound of the flowing stream. After a while, Lila spoke quietly. "Can I ask you something?" "You can ask me anything." "Were you ever lonely?" The question caught him off guard. He looked toward the distant mountains before answering. "Every day." She frowned. "But you're the King." He gave a quiet, almost sad smile. "That's exactly why." "I've always been surrounded by people." "Council members." "Warriors." "Nobles." "But very few of them ever saw me as Alcaide." "They only saw the crown." Lila understood. "I know that feeling." He turned to her. "When people looked at you..." "They only saw an omega." She nodded slowly. "They never wanted to know the real me." Alcaide reached over and gently covered her hand with his. "But I do." Lila looked into his eyes. "I don't see an omega." "I see the strongest woman I've ever met." Her breath caught. "I survived because I had no choice." "No." His voice was firm but gentle. "You survived because you refused to let cruelty change your heart." A tear escaped her eye. He brushed it away with his thumb. "You still believe you're broken." She whispered, "Sometimes I do." He shook his head. "No." "They may have broken your past..." "But they never broke you." The words settled deep inside her heart. No one had ever believed in her the way he did. She smiled through her tears. "You always know what to say." "I only tell you what I see." A butterfly drifted through the meadow before landing gently on Lila's shoulder. She laughed. "I think it likes you," Alcaide said. "Maybe." "Or maybe it simply knows a kind heart when it finds one." Their laughter faded into a comfortable silence. The breeze carried the scent of wildflowers around them. "Lila..." "Yes?" "I don't know exactly when it happened." He hesitated, searching for the right words. "But somewhere between rescuing you..." "And watching you find your smile again..." "You became the first person I think about every morning." Lila's heart skipped. Tears filled her eyes once more. "And you've become..." She whispered softly, "The place that finally feels like home." For several long seconds, neither of them spoke. They simply looked at one another. Alcaide slowly reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered gently against her cheek. Lila leaned into his touch without realizing it. Their faces moved closer. His forehead nearly touched hers. She closed her eyes. So did he. Just as their lips were about to meet— Whoosh! A sharp whistle sliced through the air. Alcaide's eyes flew open. He pulled Lila behind him as three arrows shot out from the trees. Thud! Thud! Thud! The arrows buried themselves in the ground only a few feet away. "Stay behind me!" Alcaide ordered, drawing his sword in one smooth motion. Dark figures emerged from the forest. One... Five... Ten... More than twenty masked warriors stepped from the shadows, surrounding the meadow. Their leader pointed his sword toward Lila. "The Alpha King has grown careless." His cruel smile widened. "Hand over the girl..." "And perhaps we'll let you live." Alcaide's golden eyes flashed as his wolf surged to the surface. His growl echoed through the forest. "There is only one way you'll take her." He raised his sword. "Over my dead body." The enemy leader laughed. "Then..." "So be it." With a deafening battle cry... The enemy charged.
