CHAPTER ONE : THE HUNT
Chapter One: The Hunt The forest swallowed every desperate breath that escaped my lips. Branches tore at my dress as I ran, their sharp edges scratching my arms and face until warm blood trickled down my skin. My bare feet pounded against the damp earth, ignoring the rocks and thorns cutting into them. I couldn't stop. I wouldn't stop. Not this time. "She's heading east!" The shout echoed through the trees, followed by the chilling howl of wolves. Fear wrapped itself around my heart. They were close. Too close. I pushed myself harder, gasping for air as my lungs burned. Every muscle in my body screamed for me to stop, but stopping meant only one thing. Going back. And I would rather die than return to Black Moon Pack. A branch caught my hair, yanking my head backward. I cried out, tearing myself free as strands of dark hair remained tangled in the bark. "Moon Goddess..." I whispered between breaths. "Please... help me." No answer came. Only another howl. Closer. My wolf whimpered inside me. Run. "I'm trying," I whispered. For years, I had dreamed of escaping. Years of scrubbing floors until my hands bled. Years of sleeping in a cold storage room while other omegas had beds. Years of being called useless... broken... cursed. Years of pretending their words didn't hurt. But tonight... Tonight I finally ran. The packhouse had fallen into chaos during the celebration of the annual Moon Festival. Warriors were drinking, guards were distracted, and no one noticed one insignificant omega slipping through the back gate. At least... Not until it was too late. A loud crack echoed behind me. I looked over my shoulder. Three wolves burst through the bushes. Their golden eyes locked onto me. My blood turned to ice. "No..." I stumbled as panic flooded my body. One wolf lunged. I threw myself sideways just in time, crashing down a steep hill. Pain exploded through my shoulder as I rolled over rocks and roots before slamming into the base of a tree. For several seconds, I couldn't breathe. The world spun around me. Then I heard them. Footsteps. Slow. Confident. "They found you." A familiar voice. My heart stopped. Beta Ryker. He emerged from the darkness with two warriors beside him. His lips curved into a cruel smile. "I told Alpha you wouldn't get far." I forced myself to my feet despite the pain shooting through my ankle. "I won't go back." His smile disappeared. "You don't have a choice." "I do." "You belong to Black Moon Pack." "I belong to no one." His eyes darkened. For a moment, silence stretched between us. Then he laughed. "You've become brave." "No." I swallowed hard. "I'm just tired of being afraid." The amusement vanished from his face. "Bring her." The warriors stepped forward. I backed away until my shoulders hit the rough bark of the tree. There was nowhere left to run. One warrior grabbed my wrist so tightly I cried out. "Let me go!" I struggled with everything I had, kicking and twisting, but they barely moved. To them... I was only a weak omega. Ryker stopped in front of me. His cold eyes traveled over my bruised face. "You've caused enough trouble." "I only wanted freedom." He smiled without warmth. "Freedom isn't meant for someone like you." His words cut deeper than any blade. For years, I had believed them. Tonight... I refused to. I lifted my chin. "You can drag me back." His eyebrows rose. "But you will never own me." For the first time, anger flashed across his face. He struck me. The force sent me crashing onto the ground. A metallic taste filled my mouth. Blood. One of the warriors grabbed my arms before I could stand. Ryker crouched in front of me. "You should have stayed obedient." He leaned closer. "Now Alpha is very angry." My stomach twisted. If the Alpha was angry... What awaited me would be worse than death. Ryker stood. "Tie her up." One warrior reached for the rope hanging from his belt. Just as he bent down— A deafening roar shook the entire forest. Every bird flew from the trees. The ground itself seemed to tremble. The warriors froze. Ryker's confident expression disappeared. "What was that?" Another roar echoed through the darkness. Closer. Much closer. And this one... Didn't belong to anyone from Black Moon Pack. The roar echoed through the forest a second time. Every wolf around me froze. Even Beta Ryker looked unsettled. "What was that?" one of the warriors whispered. Ryker's sharp eyes scanned the dark forest. "Stay alert." The wind suddenly changed direction. A powerful scent filled the air. Cedar. Rain. And raw Alpha dominance. The warriors immediately stiffened. "That scent..." one of them breathed. "It can't be..." Before anyone could finish speaking, a massive black wolf emerged from the shadows. His silver eyes glowed like moonlight piercing through the darkness. He was enormous. Larger than any wolf I had ever seen. Power rolled off him in terrifying waves. Even without knowing who he was, every instinct inside me screamed one thing. Alpha. Not just any Alpha. A King. The wolves beside Ryker instinctively lowered their heads. Ryker himself clenched his jaw, refusing to submit. "What is the Alpha King doing this close to our borders?" he muttered. Alpha King? My heart skipped. I had heard stories. Everyone had. Alcaide. The strongest Alpha in the Northern Kingdom. A king feared by enemies and respected by allies. Some said he had never lost a battle. Others claimed even rogue wolves avoided his territory. I had always believed they were only stories. Until now. The giant wolf stepped forward. His silver eyes swept over the scene before landing on me. Something changed. For a brief second... His eyes widened. Confusion flashed across his face. Then it disappeared. A low growl rumbled from his chest. The sound alone made my knees weak. Ryker stepped in front of me. "This omega belongs to Black Moon Pack." The black wolf didn't move. Didn't blink. Didn't even acknowledge Ryker's words. His gaze remained fixed on me. I lowered my head. Why was he looking at me? I was just an omega. Broken. Worthless. Nothing special. Another growl escaped him. This one was louder. More dangerous. The air itself seemed to vibrate. Suddenly, several wolves burst out of the forest behind him. They shifted into human form almost immediately. Each wore black warrior uniforms embroidered with a silver crescent moon. The symbol of the Northern Kingdom. One man stepped forward. He had short dark hair, sharp green eyes, and carried himself with quiet confidence. He bowed slightly toward the giant wolf. "My King." King... So the stories were true. The black wolf slowly shifted. Moonlight wrapped around his body. Bones cracked. Muscles shifted. Within seconds, a tall man stood where the wolf had been. He was breathtaking. Dark hair fell over his forehead. His piercing blue eyes were colder than winter itself. Broad shoulders. Powerful build. Every inch of him radiated authority. No one spoke. No one dared. He looked at Ryker. "You crossed my border." His voice was calm. Too calm. Ryker straightened. "This is Black Moon Pack business." Alcaide's expression didn't change. "You crossed my border." He repeated the words more slowly. "This land belongs to my kingdom." Ryker's face hardened. "We're taking back what belongs to us." For the first time, Alcaide looked at me again. Something flickered in his eyes. Something I couldn't understand. He took one step toward me. My heartbeat quickened. Then another. Every instinct told me to run. But my feet refused to move. His gaze searched my face. The bruises. The cuts. The blood on my lip. His jaw tightened. "Who did this?" Nobody answered. His eyes slowly moved toward Ryker. The temperature around us seemed to drop. "I asked..." His voice became deadly quiet. "Who did this?" Ryker folded his arms. "She is our omega." The next thing happened so fast that I barely saw it. Alcaide moved. A loud crack echoed through the forest. Ryker flew several feet before crashing into a tree. The impact shook the ground. The Black Moon warriors stared in horror. So did I. Alcaide hadn't even looked like he was trying. He slowly lowered his hand. "No one..." His voice carried across the silent forest. "...touches a woman like that." My heart stopped. No one had ever stood up for me before. Not once. For the first time in my life... Someone had defended me. And he didn't even know my name. Silence fell over the forest. Even the wind seemed to stop. Every pair of eyes was fixed on the Alpha King. Beta Ryker groaned as he pushed himself off the ground. Blood trickled from the corner of his mouth, and his face twisted with humiliation. No one had ever dared strike him like that. Not in front of his warriors. His wolf growled beneath his skin, demanding revenge. "You'll regret that," Ryker snarled, wiping the blood from his lips. Alcaide didn't even spare him a glance. His attention remained on me. For reasons I couldn't understand, his piercing blue eyes softened ever so slightly. "You." My breath caught. "Come here." I froze. Did he... mean me? Fear rooted me to the spot. Every Alpha I had ever met had looked at me with disgust or indifference. I didn't know how to respond to kindness. Seeing that I wasn't moving, Alcaide took a slow step toward me. "I won't hurt you." Those four words shattered something inside me. I wanted to believe him. Moon Goddess, I wanted to. But believing people had only brought me pain. Another step. Then another. Soon he stood only a few feet away. He frowned as he noticed the bruises blooming across my arms. His eyes darkened. "How long have they been treating you like this?" I lowered my gaze. I couldn't answer. The memories hurt too much. His jaw tightened. "You don't have to be afraid." A bitter laugh almost escaped me. Not be afraid? Fear was all I had ever known. Before I could speak, Ryker burst into laughter. "You actually pity her?" Alcaide slowly turned around. Ryker smirked. "She's nothing but a useless omega." I flinched. The words still hurt. No matter how many times I heard them. "She can't fight." "She has no rank." "No family." "No value." Each sentence was like reopening an old wound. Ryker took another step. "Take her if you want." His smile became cruel. "But she'll only become a burden." My hands clenched into fists. I hated that part of me still believed him. Suddenly— Alcaide's voice cut through the silence. "Enough." The authority in his tone silenced everyone. He looked directly at Ryker. "The only thing worthless here..." His blue eyes turned icy. "...is the way your pack treats its own." The Black Moon warriors lowered their heads. Even they couldn't deny it. Alcaide looked back at me. "What is your name?" My lips parted. No one had asked me that in a long time. Not because they cared. I swallowed. "Lila." The moment my name left my lips... Something changed. Alcaide's body stiffened. His wolf roared inside him. His blue eyes widened almost imperceptibly before narrowing again. It lasted only a second. So quickly that I wondered if I had imagined it. Xander noticed. "Alpha?" Alcaide remained silent. His gaze never left mine. There was confusion... Recognition... Almost as though he had felt something he couldn't explain. Then he took a slow breath and forced his expression back under control. "Xander." "Yes, Alpha." "Take Miss Lila to the palace." My heart lurched. The palace? Ryker stepped forward immediately. "You can't do that!" His voice echoed through the trees. "She belongs to the Black Moon Pack!" Alcaide slowly turned to face him. "No." His voice was calm. "But it carried the weight of absolute authority. "She is standing in my kingdom." He paused. "And anyone seeking refuge under my protection..." A dangerous smile crossed his lips. "...belongs to no one." Ryker's face paled. "You have no idea what you've just done." Alcaide folded his arms. "Enlighten me." Ryker laughed. It wasn't a laugh or amusement. It was the laugh of someone who knew a terrible secret. "You think this is about omega?" He shook his head. "You've just declared war." The forest became eerily quiet. Even Xander's expression changed. Ryker looked directly into Alcaide's eyes. "Our Alpha will come for her." His smile widened. "And when he does..." "He won't leave until your kingdom is reduced to ashes." Those words lingered in the cold night air. For the first time... A flicker of unease crossed Alcaide's face. Not because he feared war. But because he realized... This frightened little omega was far more important than anyone had led him to believe.
