CHAPTER ELEVEN: The Perfect Luna Lila Whispers. No matter how large the palace was, whispers always found their way into every corner. I had only intended to pass through the west corridor on my way to the greenhouse. Instead, I stopped when I heard two maids talking behind a marble pillar. "Lady Evelyn is perfect for His Majesty." "Of course she is. She's an Alpha, noble-born, elegant, and she's known the King since childhood." "I've always believed she'll become our Luna." "What about the omega?" A short silence followed. "The King is kind. He's only protecting her." "An omega could never stand beside the Alpha King." Their laughter was quiet, but every word struck my heart. I stood frozen. The tray in my hands suddenly felt heavier. I knew they weren't trying to be cruel. They were simply saying what everyone else believed. The truth. Or at least... The truth I had always believed. I quietly turned around before they noticed me. By the time I reached the palace garden, my chest felt tight. Maybe I had been foolish. Maybe I had mistaken kindness for something more. --- Across the palace... Alcaide "Lila skipped breakfast." Xander looked up from the reports spread across my desk. "She also declined training with Aria." I frowned. "Is she ill?" "No." "Then what's wrong?" He shrugged. "You're asking the wrong person." I pushed my chair back. "Cancel the afternoon meeting." Xander raised an eyebrow. "The council won't like that." "They'll survive." "And if they complain?" "They can complain tomorrow." A grin spread across Xander's face. "You've changed." I gave him a warning look. "I'm going to find her." --- Lila The greenhouse had quickly become my favorite place in the palace. Colorful flowers bloomed beneath the glass ceiling, filling the air with the sweet scent of roses and lavender. Here... No one expected anything from me. No one whispered. I knelt beside a bed of white lilies, carefully watering them. "They're beautiful." The deep voice behind me made me jump. I turned. Alcaide stood in the doorway. Sunlight streamed through the glass behind him, making his dark hair shine with hints of silver. "You frightened me." He smiled faintly. "I didn't mean to." I looked back at the flowers. "I thought you'd be with your council." "I was." "And now?" "I'd rather be here." My heart skipped. He walked closer, stopping beside me. For a while, neither of us spoke. The silence wasn't uncomfortable. It was peaceful. Finally, he asked quietly, "Why are you avoiding me?" I froze. "I'm not." "Lila." His voice was gentle. "You've barely looked at me all day." I couldn't answer. Because if I looked into those blue eyes... I was afraid he'd see everything. "I heard the servants talking." The words escaped before I could stop them. His expression changed immediately. "What did they say?" I forced a small smile. "They were right." He frowned. "I doubt that." "They said Lady Evelyn is perfect for you." Silence. "They said she'd make a wonderful Luna." My hands tightened around the watering can. "And they're right." "I don't belong here." "I'm only..." My voice broke. "An omega." Before I could step away, Alcaide gently took the watering can from my hands and set it aside. Then he turned me to face him. His blue eyes held mine. "Lila." "Look at me." Slowly... I did. "Do you know what I see when I look at you?" I shook my head. "I don't see an omega." "I don't see your rank." "I don't see the lies your old pack forced you to believe." His voice became softer. "I see a woman who survived things that would have destroyed most people." My eyes filled with tears. "I see someone who still chooses kindness after being shown nothing but cruelty." A tear slipped down my cheek. He reached up and gently wiped it away with his thumb. His touch was warm. Careful. As though I were something precious. "Stop measuring your worth through other people's eyes." His voice was barely above a whisper. "They've been wrong about you your entire life." My breathing became uneven. "How can you be so sure?" A faint smile touched his lips. "Because I trust what I see." For a long moment... Neither of us moved. The world outside the greenhouse seemed to disappear. There was only the two of us. Only the quiet beating of our hearts. Without thinking, my hand slowly slipped into his. His fingers closed gently around mine. Neither of us pulled away. Hidden beyond the flowering vines... A pair of cold eyes watched everything. The palace maid. A cruel smile spread across her lips. "So..." "The bond is growing." She quietly disappeared into the shadows. By sunset... The Black Moon Pack would know exactly where to strike next. Alcaide The warmth of her hand lingered in mine. For one perfect moment, nothing else existed. Not the kingdom. Not the council. Not the war waiting beyond our borders. Only Lila. Her silver eyes searched mine with a vulnerability that made my wolf restless. Mate. The word echoed through my mind. Every instinct urged me to pull her into my arms and promise that no one would ever hurt her again. But it was too soon. Lila still carried scars that years of kindness couldn't erase overnight. If I pushed too hard, she would retreat. So instead, I smiled. A small smile. One meant only for her. "You've been taking good care of the flowers." Lila glanced around the greenhouse. "They're easier to understand than people." I chuckled softly. "They don't argue with you." "They don't whisper behind your back either." The smile disappeared from my face. "Lila..." She quickly shook her head. "I'm fine." "No." I stepped closer. "You're pretending to be." She lowered her gaze. "I don't want to cause trouble." "You never do." "But everyone else thinks I do." Silence settled between us. Finally, I reached into my pocket. "I was saving this for another day." She looked up curiously. I opened my hand. Resting on my palm was a delicate silver hairpin shaped like a crescent moon. Tiny blue gemstones sparkled beneath the sunlight. Her eyes widened. "It's beautiful." "I saw it in the royal jeweller's shop." "It reminded me of you." She stared at the hairpin as though it were the most precious thing she had ever seen. "I can't accept this." "Why not?" "It's too expensive." "I've never..." Her voice trembled. "No one has ever given me a gift before." The words hit me harder than any blade. No gifts. No birthdays. No happy memories. Only survival. I gently placed the hairpin into her hands. "Then let this be your first." Tears filled her eyes once again. "I don't know what to say." "You don't have to say anything." For the first time since meeting her... Lila smiled without fear. A genuine smile. It transformed her entire face. Beautiful. Far more beautiful than she realized. Without thinking, I reached up and tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. She didn't move away. Instead... She leaned into my touch ever so slightly. My wolf purred. --- Lady Evelyn From the greenhouse entrance, I quietly watched them. Neither of them noticed I was there. I should have walked away. Instead... I stayed. Not because I wanted to spy. Because I wanted to understand. Then I saw it. The way Alcaide looked at Lila. There was no uncertainty. No obligation. Only affection. A deep ache spread through my chest. For years... I had believed time would eventually bring us together. The nobles believed it. My father believed it. I even believed it. But no one had ever asked Alcaide what he wanted. Now I have my answer. He had already chosen. It simply wasn't me. I closed my eyes briefly. A single tear slipped down my cheek. I wiped it away before anyone could see. "I hope..." I whispered. "...she realizes how lucky she is." With one last glance toward the happy couple, I quietly turned and walked away. --- Lila The afternoon passed more quickly than I expected. Alcaide insisted on showing me parts of the palace I had never explored. We wandered through quiet gardens hidden behind stone walls. He told me stories about climbing trees as a child and getting caught by his tutors. I laughed. "You?" "I wasn't always a responsible king." "I don't believe you." He placed a hand over his heart. "You wound me." I laughed again. The sound echoed through the garden. For a moment... I forgot everything. The war. The whispers. My past. I simply enjoyed being beside him. As we reached a small bridge crossing a clear stream, I stopped. The water reflected the evening sky. "It's beautiful." "It is." I smiled. "I'm glad you brought me here." He looked at me quietly. "I am too." Our eyes met. Neither of us spoke. The distance between us slowly disappeared. He took one careful step forward. Then another. I could hear my own heartbeat. His hand slowly lifted. His fingers brushed gently against my cheek. Everything else faded away. I thought... He was going to kiss me. A loud horn suddenly echoed across the palace. The moment shattered. Alcaide immediately stepped back. His expression hardened. A warrior sprinted across the bridge. "My King!" "What happened?" "The border scouts have returned." "They've captured one of the enemies." Alcaide's eyes narrowed. "Alive?" "Yes, Your Majesty." The warrior hesitated. "But..." "He keeps repeating the same sentence." "What sentence?" The warrior swallowed. "He says..." "...the Moon Princess must come home before the Blood Moon rises." Silence fell. Lila's heart pounded. Moon Princess? The warrior continued. "He refuses to say anything else." Alcaide turned toward Lila. His jaw tightened. Whatever was happening... It was becoming far bigger than either of them had imagined. Far away, hidden in the forest beyond the palace walls, the hooded leader watched the kingdom from the shadows. A cold smile spread across his face. "The game has begun." He raised his hand. Hundreds of glowing wolf eyes appeared in the darkness behind him. "This time..." "We won't leave without her."
