CHAPTER EIGHT: The Secret Within
Lila
I couldn't sleep.
Every time I closed my eyes, I saw the silver pendant lying on the floor outside my bedroom.
I heard the hurried footsteps.
The shouting of the guards.
The fear in Alcaide's voice when he called my name.
He had looked...
Terrified.
Not angry.
Not annoyed.
Terrified.
No one had ever looked at me that way before.
The memory lingered in my mind as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the curtains.
With a weary sigh, I pushed the blankets aside and climbed out of bed.
The palace was unusually quiet.
Walking to the balcony, I rested my hands on the marble railing.
The kingdom stretched before me, bathed in golden morning light. Smoke curled lazily from chimneys as merchants opened their shops and children chased one another through the streets below.
From this distance, everything looked peaceful.
But I knew the truth.
More guards stood along the palace walls than before.
Archers occupied every watchtower.
Warriors patrolled the courtyard in pairs instead of alone.
The attempted kidnapping had changed everything.
Because of me.
A familiar ache settled in my chest.
How many more people would be forced to fight because I existed?
I closed my eyes.
Maybe...
Maybe there was only one way to end this.
If I left.
If I surrendered myself to Black Moon Pack...
No more attacks.
No more innocent people getting hurt.
No more war.
The thought lingered longer than it should have.
Perhaps that had always been my purpose.
To sacrifice myself for everyone else.
A knock interrupted my thoughts.
Before I could answer, Martha stepped into the room carrying fresh clothes.
She smiled warmly.
"Good morning, Lady Lila."
I forced a smile.
"Good morning."
Her experienced eyes studied my face.
"You didn't sleep."
"It wasn't easy."
She placed the folded dress on the bed.
"His Majesty didn't sleep either."
I blinked.
"He didn't?"
Martha shook her head.
"He remained in his study until dawn, reviewing security reports."
A strange feeling stirred inside me.
Because of me...
He had spent the entire night awake.
Guilt tightened around my heart once again.
"I should leave."
The words escaped before I realised I had spoken them aloud.
Martha froze.
"What?"
I lowered my gaze.
"If I leave the palace..."
"They'll stop attacking."
Silence filled the room.
Then Martha walked toward me.
She cupped my face gently, forcing me to look into her eyes.
"Listen to me carefully."
Her voice was calm but firm.
"You are not a burden."
I looked away.
"You don't know that."
"I know what I've seen."
She smiled sadly.
"I've watched our King for many years."
"He carries the weight of this kingdom every single day."
"But yesterday..."
She paused.
"I saw fear in his eyes for the first time."
My heart skipped.
"Fear?"
"He was afraid of losing you."
I stared at her.
"No..."
"He barely knows me."
Martha smiled knowingly.
"Sometimes the heart recognises what the mind hasn't accepted yet."
Before I could ask what she meant, another knock sounded.
"My King."
A guard's voice came from outside.
"The council has gathered."
"I'll be there shortly."
Alcaide's voice.
He was outside my room.
A moment later, the door opened.
His blue eyes immediately found mine.
For several long seconds, neither of us spoke.
His gaze slowly travelled across my face, as if making sure I was truly unharmed.
Only then did his shoulders relax.
"You look tired."
I smiled weakly.
"So do you."
A faint smile touched his lips.
"I've looked worse."
Martha quietly excused herself, leaving us alone.
An awkward silence settled between us.
Finally, I spoke.
"I've been thinking."
His expression became serious.
"So have I."
"I should leave."
The words hung heavily in the air.
His face hardened instantly.
"No."
I swallowed.
"You didn't even let me explain."
"I don't need an explanation."
He stepped closer.
"I know exactly why you're saying it."
I looked down.
"They're attacking your kingdom because of me."
"They're attacking because they chose violence."
"If I return—"
"You won't."
His voice remained calm, but there was an unmistakable edge beneath it.
"I won't allow it."
I looked into his eyes.
"Why?"
The single word carried every question hidden in my heart.
Why save me?
Why defend me?
Why lose sleep over me?
Why risk war?
His jaw tightened.
For one impossible moment, I thought he might tell me everything.
Instead, he said quietly,
"Because your life has value."
My breath caught.
"No one has ever said that to me before."
"They should have."
His voice softened.
"Lila..."
"You have spent so many years believing your life is worth less than everyone else's."
He shook his head.
"They lied to you."
Tears blurred my vision.
"You don't know who I am."
"No."
"I know who they convinced you that you were."
He took another step.
"But those are not the same thing."
The walls I had built around my heart for years began to crack.
For the first time...
Someone wasn't trying to tell me what I should become.
He was telling me I already mattered.
Suddenly, hurried footsteps echoed through the hallway.
The door burst open.
Xander entered, breathing heavily.
"My King."
Alcaide immediately turned.
"What happened?"
Xander's expression was grim.
"We found something."
"What is it?"
"The intruder wasn't searching randomly."
He placed an old piece of parchment on the table.
"We searched Lady Lila's room."
"And we found this hidden beneath one of the floorboards."
I frowned.
"That's impossible."
"I've never seen that before."
Alcaide carefully unfolded the ancient parchment.
His expression darkened.
It wasn't a letter.
It was a map.
A very old map.
And at its centre...
Someone had drawn a single symbol in faded red ink.
A crescent moon.
Directly beneath it were three chilling words.
"The Last Heir."
Alcaide slowly lifted his eyes to meet mine.
The room fell silent.
Neither of us understood what the words meant.
But somehow...
We both knew our lives had just changed forever.
Alcaide
Silence filled the room.
The old parchment rested in my hands, its edges worn and yellowed with age.
A single sentence was written across the bottom in faded ink.
The Last Heir.
My eyes narrowed.
"What is this?"
Xander folded his arms.
"Our guards searched Lady Lila's room from top to bottom after the attempted kidnapping."
"They found the map hidden beneath a loose floorboard."
I looked toward Lila.
Her face had gone pale.
"I've never seen it before."
"I swear."
"I believe you."
The answer left my lips without hesitation.
Several council members would have questioned her.
I didn't.
There wasn't even the smallest doubt in my mind.
Someone had hidden the map there.
Someone wanted it.
Or...
Someone wanted Lila to find it.
Xander pointed toward the centre of the map.
"There."
A faded red circle surrounded a mountain range deep inside the Northern Forest.
"I've never seen this symbol before."
Neither had I.
Yet something about it felt strangely familiar.
Almost as though it belonged to an old story I had heard as a child.
Before I could think further, Elder Rowan entered the study.
"My King."
He bowed respectfully.
"Our historians have arrived."
"Good."
"Bring them."
Moments later, three elderly scholars entered carrying ancient books.
The oldest adjusted his spectacles before studying the parchment carefully.
His expression slowly changed.
"Impossible..."
"What is it?" I asked.
The old man swallowed.
"This crest..."
"It disappeared centuries ago."
Xander frowned.
"What crest?"
The historian carefully traced the faded moon carved into the map.
"It belonged to the first royal bloodline."
"The family that ruled before the kingdoms were divided."
Silence settled over the room.
"The records say their entire bloodline vanished."
"They were believed to have died without an heir."
My gaze slowly drifted toward Lila.
The words on the map echoed once more.
The Last Heir.
No.
It couldn't be.
---
Lila
Everyone kept looking at me.
It made my chest tighten.
"I don't understand."
My voice shook.
"What does any of this have to do with me?"
No one answered.
Because no one knew.
The old historian closed the dusty book.
"If the map is genuine..."
"Someone has spent many years protecting this secret."
Another historian nodded.
"And many years trying to find it."
I wrapped my arms around myself.
Nothing made sense anymore.
Yesterday I thought I was simply an unwanted omega.
Today...
Ancient maps.
Lost bloodlines.
Hidden heirs.
It all sounded like someone else's story.
Not mine.
"I think..."
I whispered.
"They've made a mistake."
Alcaide looked at me.
"No."
His voice remained calm.
"I think someone has hidden the truth from you."
Those words frightened me even more.
Because somewhere deep inside...
A strange feeling told me he might be right.
---
Later that afternoon...
Serafina found me sitting alone beside the palace fountain.
The water sparkled beneath the afternoon sun.
Yet I barely noticed its beauty.
She quietly sat beside me.
"I've been looking everywhere."
I smiled weakly.
"I needed to think."
"I guessed."
For several moments we simply listened to the sound of flowing water.
Finally she spoke.
"You're frightened."
I laughed softly.
"I think that's becoming obvious."
She nudged my shoulder gently.
"I would be frightened too."
"I don't even know who I am anymore."
"You do."
I looked at her.
"You are still Lila."
"The kind girl who apologises too much."
"The brave girl who survived."
"The friend I was lucky enough to meet."
A tear rolled down my cheek.
"What if they're wrong?"
"What if I'm nobody?"
Serafina smiled.
"Then nothing changes."
I frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"You'll still be Lila."
"You'll still have people who care about you."
"And you'll still annoy Alcaide by refusing to believe you're important."
Despite everything...
I laughed.
"You think I annoy him?"
"Oh, definitely."
She grinned.
"He spends half his day worrying about you."
Heat rushed into my cheeks.
"He does not."
"He absolutely does."
Before I could argue, footsteps approached.
Alcaide.
He stopped beside us.
"I've been searching for you."
I immediately stood.
"I'm sorry."
He sighed.
"There you go apologising again."
Serafina laughed.
"I told you."
Alcaide shook his head before looking back at me.
"I wanted to ask you something."
"What is it?"
"Would you come with me?"
I hesitated.
"Where?"
"The palace library."
"There are records there."
"If anyone can help us understand this map..."
"We'll find them."
I nodded.
"I'll come."
As they walked away together, Serafina watched them with a knowing smile.
"They're hopeless."
---
That night...
Far beneath the palace...
The palace maid knelt before a hooded figure.
"The map has been discovered."
The figure remained silent.
"And the girl?"
"She knows nothing."
A low chuckle echoed through the chamber.
"Good."
"She must never remember too soon."
The maid frowned.
"What if the King discovers the truth first?"
The hooded figure slowly looked toward the darkness.
"He won't."
"Because before that happens..."
"We'll take her."
The maid lowered her head.
"And if the Alpha refuses to let her go?"
The figure's eyes flashed beneath the hood.
"Then the Northern Kingdom will fall."
Above them...
Completely unaware of the danger closing in...
Lila followed Alcaide through the silent palace corridors.
As they entered the ancient royal library, a sudden gust of wind swept through the room.
An old leather-bound book slipped from the highest shelf.
It landed on the floor with a loud thud.
The pages opened by themselves.
Neither of them touched it.
Both stopped walking.
On the open page was an old painting.
A young woman...
With long black hair.
Silver eyes.
And a crescent-shaped birthmark on her wrist.
Lila's breath caught.
Slowly...
She looked down at her own wrist.
Hidden beneath the sleeve of her dress...
It was the very same birthmark.
