NEW BEGINNINGS
Shouts reverberated from under her. They were fighting, they never fight but now they are and it's all because of her. She didn't mean to say yes but she wanted to, nothing happened but her dad wouldn't want to believe it. She had to do something before it got worse, she knew how bad her dad’s temper was. Taking careful but heavy steps she made her way down the stairs. The voices became louder as she approached the living room, squatting by the edge of the stairs she hid from sight so they wouldn't know she could hear them. “It’s your fault she's like this”, her dad said “Honey nothing happened between them”, her mum tried for the umpteenth time to convince him. “It doesn't matter. The fact that she said yes to him means she could have been preparing herself for a whole lot more she thought she was ready for” “She’s 16 Jake!, she's bound to have a boyfriend sooner or later. I don't know why you're making a huge fuss over it” “We’re moving”, her dad suddenly declared “What? No!”, Amelia came out of her hiding place and shouted “We’re moving and that's final!” “Jake you can't keep running from this forever” “Oh I can and I will”. With that, he stormed up the stairs and slammed the room door behind him. Amelia looked over to her mum for help but she just held a defeated look and she knew right there and then that all hope was lost. They were moving and there was nothing she could do about it. ... New school, new house, new life, and a whole new phase of loneliness. The car seemed to be going faster than usual, as if her Dad couldn't wait to get out of their neighbourhood. Clouds and trees passed by in haste, she couldn't even recognize the area any longer. They were moving further and further away from her childhood, were she could in the least say she had fun. Moving away from him, the loneliest of all. She didn't even get a chance to say goodbye and wish him well, didn't look at his face one last time, didn't trace the freekles on his cheek, didn't look into the dark hazels of his eyes and see the smile that made his eyes look small. She would miss him but would he miss her? Will he wonder what happened and where she was headed? Will he come find her? This isn't a movie Amelia! Don't kid yourself, he probably has already forgotten about you, she thought. Being the kind of people they both were, they didn't get any pictures taken together. No chance to capture the moment and keep to reminisce on later. The memories would remain in her head and her head alone and who knows, maybe at some point she would wonder if they were all real or just pigment of her imagination. The letters! She rumaged through her bag and wherever else she could in the moving car, those were the only reassurance she had that he felt something for her even if it was little. They were not there. Gone. “Dad can we go back I think I forgot something” “Ame, I know this is your way of trying to stop but were going” “I’m not trying to stop anything dad! I really forgot something” “I’m sorry but we're not turning back” “Mom please tell dad I really forgot something” Her mum looked over to her dad and saw his face, she looked at Amelia with pleading eyes and shook her head. That was it, she couldn't get them back. The only place were her true emotions were shown. Were she could talk, laugh and imagine without feeling some type of way. The papers were gone, her feelings on paper just blown away like dust. Unable to hold it in any longer, she sobbed. Shook violently as hot tears streamed down her face, she couldn't even try to admire the scenery around her. Everywhere was blurry, she laid down in the back seat and closed her eyes wishing the pain and nightmare would stop. “Hey Amelia! Look out!”, Jay shouted. Amelia thinking she was in real danger squatted, put her hands over head and let out the scariest shriek ever. She heard laughter around her and decided to put her head up, Jay stood right in front of her laughing. “Jay! It's not funny” “Oh trust me it was, you should have seen your face. Priceless!”, he continued laughing “I’m going to get you for this trust me” “Oh please you've been saying that ever since I started pranking you and guess what? You haven't gotten me back, not even once” “That’s a lie but okay” Out of nowhere a red light started moving around her eyes and her face. She looked up and found Jay with a light pen moving it around her face. “Oh no you don't”, she said reaching out to grab the light pen and failed because he moved too quickly. Damn his reflexes, she thought “Here have yours”. He threw another light pen at her and she caught it without grace. Round and round the cafeteria they went targeting each other with the light pen. Jay got more of Amelia while she just kept on laughing and trying to dodge the one's she could. They ran and ran until Amelia admitted defeat and fell back on the floor. “I can't go on anymore Jay, you won” “Of course I do. I always do.” They laid back on the floor in silence catching their breaths. “Hey Ame” “Yeah?”, she looked over to him and caught him starting at her “That was fun. Thanks” “You’re always welcome Jay” “There’s something I want to tell you”, he said looking uncertain. This was the first for him, Jay usually doesn't care what he says and how others took it but right at that moment, he did care. “Shoot, you know you can tell me anything” “I...” With that Amelia opens her eyes. Shoot! The memories, she thought. They were still on the road and her shirt was already drenched with sweat. “Dad can you put on the air conditioner?, she asks “Sorry love but its not working” “Looks like nothing seems to be going my way today”, she mumbles. She winds the window all the way down and sticks her head slightly out. Closing her eyes and taking in the scents of trees passing by. She forces herself to clear her mind and to think of the move as a new beginning. A new chapter were she could try to change a lot of things about her and not make the same mistakes as before. ... School was always a thing Amelia had to come to terms with, she wasn't exactly the brightest but at the same time not the dullest. She understood the importance of education but decided at an early age that she would never force education on her children. Whatever they decided to do as long as it didn't harm them directly or indirectly she would be supportive. Now here she was, in a posh school faraway from home with her dad thinking this was the best option for her. Maybe it was maybe it wasn't but she didn't really care, all she wanted to do was to get as far away from her parents as possible. The school was painted yellow with a combination of a dark shade of red or at least that's what she thought the colours looked like. Her brothers usually said she had colour blindness but she refused to believe she was that bad at recognising some colours. The combinations looked nice from outside but she learnt a long time ago to not judge a book by its cover, in most situations it applied but she hoped it wouldn't in this case. Her dad parked their black audi and she surprised herself by getting off before her parents. Flinging her favourite backpack; an old jeans model that had seen better days over her shoulder, she decided to figure out the processes all alone. The parking lot had kernels all over and it was going to be a struggle getting her luggage from the car to the checkpoint, wherever exactly that was. The structures were considerably close together except the building adjacent from the parking lot which she figured was some sort of store. The stairs that led to the main buildings were a few feets away from where they parked. Passing the stairs there was a dining hall to her left and what looked like an old basketball court to her left. Conopies and chairs were set up in the court, she saw other girls loading their bags and talking to the women sitting there. Wait was this an all girls school? She never thought her dad would take such drastic measures just to get her away from a boy but looks like be did. A girl wearing a pair of gray baggy sweatpants and a plain tee was passing by so she decided to ask. “Hi sorry but is this an all girls school?” “Sorry?”, the girl looked extremely confused “Is this a school for only girls? Like are there boys attending this school too?” “Oh oh yeah of course. Sorry the question caught me off guard, it's just weird that that was the first question you would ask after just getting here” “How do you know I just got here?”, Amelia asked “I wasn't stalking you or anything but I noticed you when you got out of your car so fast. You were really surveying the surroundings like maybe there were secrets agents hiding somewhere and you were sent to find them”, she said laughing “Oh” “Yeah. So I'm Gabby, it's nice to meet another person who isn't particularly excited to be here” “Was it really obvious?” “Yeah, more than you probably wanted to show” “I was aiming for this whole I'm not excited be here but I can still make it kind of vibe” “Well at least you got the first part right”, she said laughing “Oh yeah I'm Amelia. Ame for short. It's nice to meet you too” “Same here. So where are you're parents?” “I kinda lost them around the parking lot but I'm sure I'll find them soon. What about you?” “Well my mum is just finalising my clearance and i’ll be headed to the dorm after that” “Well then I guess I should get to clearing myself so I can get settled in the new found prison” “It’s a fancy one don't you think?” “Yeah better than the one's I've been to” “You’ve been to jail?”, Gabby asked with wide eyes “No. I was just going with the flow Gabs”, Amelia said laughing “I was scared for a second” “Why? If I had a criminal record you wouldn't be talking to me?” “No it's not that, you just don't look like someone that would end up in jail” “Well don't judge a book by it's cover” “Don’t worry if you do end up in jail, I'll be your everyday visitor” They both laughed at the thought. “Well Gabs I should let you off now, my parents are probably looking for me now”, Amelia said after calming down “I guess I'll see you around then, I really hope we can be friends and I love the nickname already” “Yeah we can no worries. See you later”, Amelia waved at her and went back to the parking lot. The clearance took longer than she expected. Turns out they take their searching a lot more serious than her previous school. At least they didn't confiscate any of her things. Her room number was A11 and her roommate was a Priscilla something, she hoped they would at least get along if not become best friends. Their room could be considered spacious for just two people. The bunk bed at the farther end of the room with the closet directly beside it, one reading table was in front of the bed while the other was in front of the closet. The walls were painted green and she wondered if she could get it changed to something lighter or neutral. There were no drawers so she would have to separate her underwears when arranging her closet. The closet didn't look like it would accommodate all her clothes so she would have to leave the rest in her box and put it close to her bed. The day passed very slowly after that. The memories invaded her dreams when she napped and it wasn't even nighttime yet. Her room was already filled with boxes so she assumed her roommate had arrived. But seriously who needed this much load? She wondered. Not everyone is like you Amelia, some of them actually care about how they look. Yeah and she really needs to stop talking to herself, some might actually think she is crazy since she does it a lot. Someone singing a horrible version of Saturday night by Khalid came out of the bathroom in a pink robe. “All the things that I know that your parents don't...”, the person stops immediately she notices Amelia stiffling a laugh “I know I was bad but it can't be that serious right?”, she asks “You’re not that bad but I'm guessing you tend to go off key a lot”, Amelia responds still laughing “Well... I wouldn't exactly call it that but yes yes I do”, the girl says also laughing “I’m Amelia” ”Oh yeah sorry I'm Priscilla. Was wondering when you were going to wake up” “Oh really? Well then expect more to come in the future”, Amelia said and Priscilla laughed at that. With no more conversation springing forth between them, Amelia used the opportunity to properly look at her roommate. She was like 5”6, around the same height as Amelia but she had a prettier face. The one guys would be fighting over and she wouldn't even like either one of them. Long Auburn hair that reached her waist and a slight slim figure with curves to accentuate. She looked like someone that would eat little and still work out to remove the carbs, the direct opposite of who Amelia was. She loved her food and hated exercise, I mean who wouldn't want to eat a burger on a sunny day? “Hey Priscilla” “Yeah?” “Do you wear glasses?” “No I prefer using contacts. Why?” “Oh no it's nothing, I'm just asking” “How did you even know I wear glasses?” “I guess you can say that's my superpower” “Tch that's silly”, she said shaking her head “Yeah well some people out there are probably wishing for a superpower like mine” “No I don't think anyone wishes for that” “Well you never know” Amelia gets off her bed and walks over to the bathroom but stops. “What would you wish for?”, she asks Priscilla turning around “What do you mean?”, she replied confused “I mean for a superpower. What would you wish for?” “Hmmmm. I'll probably go with the power to disappear whenever I wanted to” “Why that?” “I dunno, just guess that when things get too hard for me to handle I could just hide away for awhile before confronting the issues head on” “Except we can't have any of those” “Thats the reality girl”, Priscilla says sadly Amelia finally heads to bathroom to wash up. It takes her half an hour to get ready because she spent almost half of the time singing in the shower. By the time she leaves the bathroom Priscilla had already left the room. Dressing as quickly as possible, she decides to leave alone because well she doesn't have anyone to walk with in the first place. The dorms were quite tricky and she almost got lost twice. Finally she found the dining hall and it was already packed. She picked up her food and scouted for any empty seats around, she heard her name and turned around to find out who it was. She bumped into the girl behind her and their food got thrown to the ground. “What the hell is wrong with you?!”, the girl asked looking seriously annoyed “I’m so sorry I didn't see you there”, Amelia apologized “Next time you open your eyes a little bit wider before abruptly turning around”, the girl said and stomped away Really? Who still stomps in this time and age? Amelia wondered. “Hey Ame I saw what happened, I'm so sorry”, Gabby said rushing over to meet her “It’s not your fault I bumped into her” “Well I was the one who called your name and made you turn around so technically it is my fault” “Well in that case, apology accepted”. They both cleared the mess and Amelia had to get a new tray. She met Gabby and few other girls at a table “Amelia this is Ruth my roommate and Tesa my friend from home”, Gabby introduced once she was seated “Hi guys, it's nice to meet you” “Nice to meet you too”, they responded simultaneously and laughed immediately after “Does that happen often?”, Amelia asked “What? We saying the same things at the same time?, Ruth asked “Yeah that” “No it doesn't, this was just the first time”, Tesa replied “Oh alright” “Guys did you hear?”, Gabby asked “Hear about what?”, Ruth asked “About the new transfer boys. I heard they are totally hot and could pass off as college guys”, Gabby fawned “But you haven't even seen them yourselves, how could you already be fawning over them?”, Amelia asked “Well I heard one of them is the brother of James, this super hot senior that graduated like last year and apparently the looks are genetic”, she replied almost immediately “Yeah well I advice you to not fawn unless you've seen for yourself” “Yes mom”, Gabby said laughing They ate their food in silence after that and went to their rooms for the night. ... First day of school and she hasn't made a total fool of herself yet, that's an improvement. She'd expected to have already drop a book or something since she's extremely clumsy. Their classes started in twenty minutes and she hadn't seen Gabby or her roommate anywhere, they probably aren't in the same class if they aren't here yet. Putting her head on the desk, she decided to get some shut eye before the teacher came into class. Not long after there was a knock on the desk, she looked up and met with an almost familiar set of hazel eyes. She blinked once, twice but still couldn't get any words out of her mouth. “You’re in my seat”, the boy said “Oh really, I'm so sorry”, she said scrambling out of the seat and got all her things off the table “Thanks”, he mumbled She found a free desk two seats away from him at the back, she moved and settled her things there a second time. Looking over to his side, she could only see the back of his brown hair from where she was seated and the view was quite a sight. Well it looks like a whole new obsession begins on my first day! She thought within herself.
