Chapter 1 – The Confrontation
“Marcus… how could you? Marcus… where are you? How could you do this to me?” Adeline’s voice rang through the penthouse, raw and piercing. Her black heels clicked sharply against the marble floor as she moved toward him, every step deliberate, every breath trembling with rage and disbelief. She stopped in front of him, gray suit sharp against her frame, the fabric clinging in all the ways it should, projecting power even while her heart was breaking.
Marcus looked down to her from the stairs, dark eyes flickering with guilt. His tailored navy shirt seemed suddenly tight on him, the sleeves rolled halfway up his forearms. “Adeline… I… I didn’t mean—”
“Didn’t mean?” she spat, voice cracking. “Marcus… didn’t mean? I gave you my everything. My trust, my love, my heart… and you gave it to her! Nora! My friend, my confidante, my—” Her voice caught, trembling for a moment before snapping back into fury. “And you two were laughing, plotting, lying behind my back! How blind was I? How blind?”
“I… I never wanted to hurt you,” Marcus said quickly, his hands tightening on the armrests, knuckles white. “You have to believe me. I didn’t—”
“Believe you?” Adeline laughed, bitter and harsh. “I trusted you, Marcus. I trusted both of you! And all the while, every night I went to sleep thinking I was loved, thinking I was safe… you were with her. Smiling. Whispering. Pretending. How could I have been so blind?”
“I… I thought I could—”
“Thought you could? Handle what?” she snapped, stepping closer, heels clicking sharply. “Handle lying to me? Handle destroying the person who loves you most? Handle taking my trust and twisting it for your pleasure? Marcus… do you even hear yourself?”
“I… I didn’t mean it,” he whispered, shaking his head. “I never wanted it to go this far.”
“Far?” she repeated, voice rising. “Far is forgetting an anniversary. Far is forgetting to call when you’re late. Far is having an affair with my best friend, plotting my downfall while I gave you my life! Far? This is betrayal! Plain, unmitigated betrayal!”
Her chest heaved. Her hands trembled as she pressed them flat against the dining table, nails biting into the polished wood. “Do you know what it feels like, Marcus? To see the man you love, the one you trusted more than anyone, whispering with another woman, laughing at jokes I was never meant to hear? Do you know how it feels to realize that every moment, every memory, every word you thought meant something… meant nothing to him?”
“I… I care, Adeline. I care about you more than anything,” Marcus said, voice tight, fragile. “Please… I never wanted to—”
“Shut up Marcus ! Enough of your lies already!!, You never wanted to?” she shouted, stepping closer until the space between them was electric, suffocating. “Marcus… you spent months hiding messages, avoiding calls, smiling while I thought we were happy. And you… you were lying to me. Every second, every word… all lies!”
“I… I love you,” he said quietly, almost pleading. “I’ve always—”
“Love me?” she laughed bitterly. “Love me? Marcus, love doesn’t lie. Love doesn’t hide. Love doesn’t use someone who trusts you more than their own life!”
“I never wanted to hurt you!” he said, louder now, desperation threading his words. “I didn’t!”
“You didn’t want to hurt me?” she repeated incredulously, trembling with fury. “Marcus… every night I dreamed of us, every morning I woke thinking I had someone to trust, someone to love… and you were betraying me. You were giving everything I gave you to her! Do you understand what it feels like to have your heart ripped out while the one you love smiles at someone else?”
Marcus lowered his gaze, voice breaking. “Adeline… I… I can fix it. I can make it right.”
“You think you can make it right?” she spat. “It’s too late for that. Too late for your apologies, too late for your excuses, too late for your lies. You’ve done enough damage. You’ve ruined our lives. You’ve ruined me.”
Her fists clenched at her sides, knuckles white. “And you, Marcus… and you think she’s innocent? That she hasn’t been plotting too? Nora… my friend… my family… plotting with you to destroy everything I built, everything I am?”
“I… I—”
“Save it,” she hissed, voice low, trembling. “I don’t want your excuses. I don’t want your lies. I want you to see the truth for once. I loved you, Marcus. I trusted you. And this is how you repay me?”
Marcus’s shoulders slumped. “I… I don’t know what to do. I… I—”
Adeline’s eyes narrowed, voice deadly. “Do you know what happens to people who betray me? Marcus, do you? I am not weak. I am not blind. I am not the woman you think I am. And now… now I watch. I see everything. Every plan you make with her. Every lie you whisper. And one day… one day, it will come back to you. Everything. Every secret. Every betrayal. Every move you think I haven’t seen.”
Marcus swallowed hard. “Adeline… please… I—”
“You will not get away with this,” she said quietly, her voice low but lethal. “I will see it all. I will wait. And when the time comes… Marcus, when the time comes… you will pay.” She walked to the balcony as hot tears rolled down her cheeks as she felt a sharp cut of betrayal from the people she loved and trusted the most 💔
⸻
Once Adeline stormed to the balcony, letting the cold Chicago wind whip her hair, Marcus sank into the armchair, running a hand over his face. He didn’t notice Nora leaning casually against the kitchen counter, glass of red wine in hand, shadows from the chandelier slicing across her face like knives.
“She’s gone for now,” she said softly, voice smooth, dangerous. “But she knows too much. What do we do, Marcus? She will expose us if we don’t act.”
“I… I can’t—” he stammered, voice low, shaking. “Killing her… I can’t. I… I just— we can find another way around this — I can’t kill her”
“You can’t?” Nora stepped closer, eyes cold, calculating. “Marcus… she sees through us. She’s not going to wait for us to be polite. She knows everything. Every detail. And if she talks… everything we’ve worked for, everything we’ve wanted, will be gone. Do you understand that?”
He swallowed, fear evident in his face. “Yes… I understand. But… it’s… it’s still… her. I—”
“It’s necessary,” Nora hissed, voice deadly. “If she even suspects what we plan, everything is over. We can’t let her live to ruin us. And the baby? We have to be ready. We take care of everything. She cannot interfere. She cannot—”
Marcus rubbed his forehead. “I… I don’t know if I can—”
“You don’t have a choice,” she cut him off, voice like steel. “We’ve gone too far. You’ve gone too far. And she… she will never stop watching. If we wait, she will ruin us. Do you understand? She will ruin us, Marcus, if we don’t act.”
He exhaled shakily, glancing at her. “Yes… I understand. But… every time I look at her, I… I can’t—”
“Don’t look at her,” Nora said, voice cold. “Don’t think of her. Think of yourself. Think of what we want. Think of everything we’ll lose if she exposes us. Think of your child. Think of our plans. And then… act.”
Marcus swallowed hard. “Yes… yes. I understand.”
