On the way back home my mother was a bit twitchy in a way that most people would dismiss as nerves. Something was off. "Mama, what's wrong?" I asked as we drove home. "Hmm...? Oh nothing dear, I'm just tired." My mother said wearing a fake smile. "You sure mama?" I asked. "Yes my dear. Now sit still we are almost home..." My mother said trying to hide her feelings.
"Hallo hallo, look at all of you. Come give your aunty Stella a big hug." Said aunt Stella, she wasn't one of the nicest people and we still have no idea where she fits in the family but nobody ever dares to ask that question. Dragon lady would be the best way to describe her on a good day. "Come now, why all the long faces?" She asked. "Sorry aunt Stella, I'm tired, had my tennis game today and came in 2nd place." I said trying my best to look genuinely happy but tired at the same time. "Oh all right then. Guessing I'll be having all of the chocolate tart for myself then." Stella said with that 'I dare you to walk away' look on her face.
"You can give my peace to Kim and Trace aunt Stella. I'm going to take a shower." I said walking past Stella straight to my room. "Are you feeling OK Charlotte?" My father said behind me. "Daddy! Out! I'm dressing! MAMA!!!" I screamed. "What is it my de-- Gordan what the hell are you doing?" My mother said as she saw my father in my room and me in a half naked ball on the floor. "Sorry I didn't mean to scare her. I just wanted--" "Out Gordan." My mother said pointing my father out of my room and closing the door behind him. "Sweetie are you OK?" My mother asked and helped me up. "Yes, I think so mom. I didn't hear dad knock..." "It's going to be OK my dear. Go and enjoy your shower, dinner will be ready when you are finished." My mother said. "Thank you mom" I said.
"Charlotte, your mother says you got 2nd place in tennis today, is everything alright?" My father said. "Yes dad, um well it was a tough few games but I know next time will be better." I said not looking at my dad. "That's my girl." My father said with a proud smile on his face. "Yes well, sometimes we all find a stepping stone along the way, don't we Gordan?" My mother said keeping the stare with my dad. "Yes dear, that is very true." My dad said.
"Mom do I have to share a room with aunt Stella?" I asked my mom as she came out Kim and Trace's room. "I know you don't like her my dear but yes you have to. It's only for tonight." My mother said looking down the hallway. "OK mom. If she gets too much can I go sleep in Kim and Trace's room?" I asked. "Sure sweetie, just don't wake them ok?" My mother said. "OK thank you mom" I said and was off to bed.
"...what if they find out?" I heard Stella saying. "No one will find out, you just keep your trap shut and no one will ask questions. Got it?" My dad said. "I understand, what about Clare?" Stella asked. "What about my mother?" I said as i walked into my room to find my dad there alongside Stella. Stella had a very guilty look on her face. "Well? Must I go and get my mother so she can ask the question instead?" I said with my arms crossed. "No Charlotte, your aunt was just planning on a surprise for your mother and we don't want her finding out about it before it's time. Or do you want to ruin the big surprise for her that might just have made her very happy?" My father said with a smirk. "No, sorry I didn't know it was something for mom. Good night dad." I said feeling drained. I didn't like the feeling of this whole thing, but I also didn't want to cause my mother pain or heartbreak for if my father and Stella are telling the truth.
