A petite lady wearing a bright pink sundress and floppy straw hat signalled back. She was standing with the St John’s Ambulance volunteers and used a series of exaggerated gestures to bring Danny’s attention to their rainbow-striped epaulettes. Satisfied he’d seen, she headed toward him. “The police and Fire Service are wearing them, too,” said Danny as his mother approached. “Their idea, not mine.” “Really? Well, I never.
