That contact name seared into my eyes.
I held my breath and opened the conversation.
Grant: Baby, I've been thinking about you all day.
Grant: That i***t is going out of town this weekend. Let's go back to that hotel again.
Then they started sending each other explicit photos.
Flirty voice messages and tender texts made my eyes burn as I read them.
My hands and feet went cold as I accidentally opened the photo gallery.
The gallery was full of them. The two of them wrapped around each other on the beach, selfies in hotel beds.
There was even a close-up from my birthday last month, me in front of the camera with my eyes closed, making a wish, while under the tablecloth their fingers were laced together.
Every single time I had gone out of town for work over the past year, they had been together.
I went into the purchase history next.
Last month's charges were right there.
One charge was for the necklace he gave me for our five-year anniversary. Twenty thousand.
The very next charge was for a pair of luxury couple's rings. Sixty thousand.
The shipping address was Camille's apartment.
I couldn't hold it in anymore. I gagged right there in the seat.
Someone knocked on the window.
I killed the screen, shoved the phone deep into the glove box, took a breath, and unlocked the door.
Grant opened the door and slid in, bringing a gust of cold air with him.
Still shaken, he pulled me into his arms and rested his chin on top of my head.
"I'm so pissed. What a dump. Lucia, I swear, I wouldn't come back to this place even if they paid me."
He sounded genuinely outraged, like he was the one who had been wronged.
I leaned into him and caught the scent of Camille's perfume still clinging to his clothes.
I didn't push him away.
"Okay. We won't come back."
Over the next few days, Grant was a hundred times more attentive than usual.
He got up early every morning to make my favorite breakfast and picked me up from work right on time.
Even when I casually mentioned my shoulder was sore, he insisted on massaging it for a full half hour.
Camille kept herself busy too.
She sent me long iMessages every day.
Camille: Lucia, that day really scared me to death. I'm so glad you were sensible and didn't read into it.
Camille: Having a best friend like you is the greatest blessing of my life!
Camille: On your wedding day, I'm going to be the most beautiful bridesmaid and watch you be happy with my own eyes!
I stared at the heartfelt words on the screen and replied with a sticker that said, "Love You". My expression never changed.
I had no tears left.
All I had left now was curiosity. What would happen when cheaters got caught?
My fingers were flying across my phone screen.
Over the past few days, I had found time to export everything from that backup phone.
Hotel reservations, bank transfers, intimate photos.
I sorted them into file after file, page after page.
I calmly compressed them into a zip file, typed in my personal email address, and clicked send.
I watched the sent confirmation pop up at the top of the screen and waited for the storm to hit.
I went on enjoying Grant's attention, kissing him back, joking around with Camille in our group chat like nothing had changed.
That evening, Grant sat on the couch with his arm around my waist, scrolling through wedding dresses on his tablet.
"This mermaid one is nice. It'll show off your figure."
He looked at me with so much love in his eyes. "You're going to be the most beautiful bride in the world."
I smiled and nodded. "Whatever you want."
He went back to scrolling, even starting to plan what color to paint the future nursery.
I closed my email, looked up, met Grant's tender gaze, and smiled back at him with even more devotion than he was showing me.
