Blurb

My fiancé Grant Bennett and I were on our pre-wedding honeymoon. My best friend Camille Vance had insisted on coming along because, of course, she had.

We walked up to the front desk to check in. The clerk held out the room key, not to me, not to Grant, but straight to Camille, like it was second nature.

"Will you two be in 402 again? And is it all right if the other lady takes the room next door?"

The lobby went absolutely still.

Grant's hand stopped in midair. Camille's face turned white.

One look at their faces, the way their eyes darted away, the way neither of them breathed, and I knew.

My fiancé and my best friend were together.

I set my key back on the counter and looked at the clerk.

"I won't be needing my room. Or this honeymoon. They can have each other."

Chapter 1
Nobody moved. The whole lobby felt frozen. The clerk was clearly smart enough to read the room. Her eyes flicked to the two of them and then back to me, and she took the key back with a polished smile that gave nothing away. "I am so sorry about that, ma'am. Our system pulled up an old reservation under the same name by mistake. Mr. Bennett, these are your two keys. Because of the confusion, we will upgrade your room at no charge." Grant snapped out of it and immediately went loud. "What kind of place is this? A system error? If anyone hears about this, do you have any idea how that makes me look?" He slammed his hand on the marble counter. "I want your manager. Now. This is not going away." Then he turned to me, all concern, except his eyes kept sliding off my face. Camille recovered even faster. She squeezed out tears on command and grabbed my sleeve. "Lucia, tell me you're not actually reading into this." Her voice wobbled, all fragile and hurt. "Grant and I have never been anything but innocent. I know you trust him, but what about us? We have been best friends for over ten years. I have been having a rough time lately, and he has only been nice to me because of you. If it makes you uncomfortable, I will leave right now." She reached for her suitcase like she meant it. People were staring. I could feel their eyes on us. Watching the two of them put on their little show, red-faced and desperate, I almost laughed. If I had not seen the sweat on Grant's forehead, if I had not seen Camille's hand clamped onto the back of his jacket like she was holding on for her life, I would have been the i***t apologizing and begging them to calm down. I took a breath and shoved the disgust back down my throat. I pulled my sleeve out of her grip and gave her hand a gentle pat. "All right, stop crying. I did not say I do not believe you." I rubbed my temple and put on my best exhausted face. "It probably was just a glitch. I have been working too much, and my head is pounding. You two sort this out. I'll wait in the car." Grant exhaled like a man who had just dodged a bullet. "Good, good, go rest. It is freezing out there. Do not catch a cold." He even fixed my collar with that loving look he had practiced so well. I turned and walked out. The automatic doors closed behind me, and Grant's fake outrage was cut off mid-sentence. The December air hit my face, and I had never been more clear-headed. I got back in the car and locked the doors. In the glove box was Grant's backup phone. He had always said it was just for navigation, an old phone he barely touched. I pulled it out and pressed the power button. The lock screen appeared. Passcode required. I typed in Camille's birthday without thinking. The phone unlocked on the first try. Of course it did. The screen filled with unread iMessages. The only pinned thread was from Camille. The contact name was saved as Babe.
