Prologue
Everyone deserves a vacation, you know, down time when you catch up on sleep, the movies you missed and books you want to read. I'm the same, but different!
My Mother's realm is the best place to relax. The sun shines, without getting too hot, so tanning is comfortable. The lake is clear and fresh, great for swimming. All of the residents live in peace, which is fantastic.
The other realms, where I work for Mother, are not so peaceful, which keeps me away from home, trying to build peace. Time runs a little slower here too. Although it's been 10 years since I finished my last job in the mortal realm, I've only been here a week.
I was enjoying a really relaxing dream, sure I was going to see the face of my mate when....
"Wake up Beloved"
My Mother could not have worse timing, and she, of all beings, should know better.
"Wake Up Helena"
OK, she means it.
"I hear you Mother, is there a reason you disturbed my dream?"
"Oh" she paused and her eyes went hazy for a moment. "I'm sorry dear, but that was a bit premature, it's not time for you to meet him, yet. I have an important task for you."
"As always, Psyche and I are at your service, what is the task?"
"My sentinel needs to be rescued, delivered and observed. No help, unless it's vital. He is back, and has found her."
So a child needs rescuing, and that's my job. Could be simple, but if I have to observe she obviously thinks there may be trouble from Him. Assuming I can get to the child before Him.
"So which pack am I rescuing from, where am I delivering and what's my cover for observing?"
She knew I would do it, this is just the kind of job I love, though it is tough if I have to witness suffering and not take action to stop it. "We'll find a way somehow, without her noticing. We usually do." said my wolf Psyche.
"Go to the Forrest Moon pack, make it look like an a*******n, we will need the pack later and I don't want him to destroy them. He must believe they have no idea what happened to her."
"Her name is Cassiopeia, but her friends call her Star, she was born on the Summer Solstice 18 months ago. Take her to the Crescent Moon pack. The Alpha family have a sick child you need to heal. There is much more healing needed in that pack, but I know you and Psyche will enjoy sorting them out."
Psyche and I flew to the Forrest Moon pack from our celestial retreat. Mother had said it was urgent so I allowed myself to appear before the pack Luna, (by-passing border controls) as she was less likely to try to kill me on sight than any of the warriors or her Alpha. Packs don't like strangers dropping in without passing their border guards.
As I explain a little of my mission, Luna Cassandra starts to sob telling me my target is her daughter. She knew her daughter was a blessed child, Mother Selene had told her before the child was born. This meant she understood the importance of my mission even though it broke her heart. Our enemy must not lay hands on her, particularly while she is a wolf less child unable to protect herself.
Cassandra wrapped her daughter up well, to protect her from the winter cold, and handed her to me, asking me to watch over her, and bring her home when it was safe.
Taking care to leave tracks, making it look like a rogue had managed to snatch the child, I flew across the country to the border of the Crescent Moon packlands. They are a large, powerful pack with the ability to raise and protect an 'orphan'.
I left the child with a note giving her name, and birth date, asking them, in the name of Goddess Selene, to protect her as her parents could not.
I concealed myself and watched a patrol discover her the Alpha and Luna were summoned, and Luna Elise insisted that they take her in.
Meanwhile the Forrest Moon pack had launched a huge search for their Alphas 'missing' daughter, making sure all of the packs around them knew what had happened. When word of their search reached my enemy he started looking for her again, and left her birth pack alone.
I have never managed to identify my enemy, neither has Mother. I am able to feel his aura though, and while in the mortal and supernatural realms I can sense some of his feelings, and his anger when he lost track of the child was shocking, even triggering a blizzard in the land around Forrest Moon pack.
For several weeks Psyche and I watched over her from a distance, looking for the opportunity Mother had promised to get us into the pack.
Luna Elise had a daughter 6 months older than Star who became dangerously ill. An adult with a wolf would have been able to fight the disease, but a young cub was in real danger and the pack doctors were unable to help.
Psyche is a very distinctive wolf, so she needed a disguise, and chose a midnight black coat, with blue lights, and white tips to her ears and tail. the white crescent Moon shape over her left eye was a nice touch.
Healing the child was simple for one with my gifts, and a very grateful Luna Elise persuaded her Alpha to let me in, and I joined the pack enabling me look after my charge as best I could. What I didn't know was poor Luna Elise had already lost 2 young pups to this disease, and she spent a lot of her time studying for treatments and cures, even though I was able to prevent her losing either of her twins, who came along 2 years after I saved their sister. I'm not sure the Alpha ever really understood what losing 2 pups, and almost losing a 3rd did to his Luna, though they were fated mates & loved each other very much, their eldest child, son and heir Liam who was the apple of his fathers eye.
Safely situated, I was able to watch the pack, and my charge.
It quickly became clear that this pack was behind the times. I was horrified by the treatment of the packs Omega females.
As with all packs, the Omegas were considered to be lowest ranked wolves, weaker than all others, and therefore dependant on higher ranked wolves.
In this pack, Alpha Leo was in charge, supported by his Beta, Mark, in running both the pack and their various businesses. Luna Elise was distracted from her role in running the pack by her mourning and research into the illness that took 2, and almost 3 of her pups. The Gamma, Sam, was in charge of security, primarily as the Luna's bodyguard, but also working with the head warrior on the training of all pack warriors.
As a healer I was awarded Delta status, with all the other professionals of the pack. My orphan charge however had been classed as an Omega so I needed to change the treatment they received from the pack.
It was just after the Alpha's daughter, Stacy had turned 4 that I was given a chance to start improving the life of the Omegas in the pack. Very early on Christmas eve the Luna summoned me to Stacy who was having trouble breathing. The poor child had a nasty cold, but the Luna did have a tendency to overreact when her pups were ill. Having got them both back to sleep I made my way to the kitchen where I knew the Omega team would be starting breakfast preparations. What I was greeted by was shocking. All four of the Omega team were battered and bruised, three were only semi conscious. The one able to speak told me they had been forced to 'play' with a group of warriors. Using my gifts I transported all four to the hospital wing where I examined them all, taking photos and DNA samples from all of them. They had all been assaulted by more than one male, and I was fuming.
As it was now breakfast time I returned to the kitchen ready to read the riot act. I found the head Omega in tears before a furious Alpha who was demanding to know why breakfast wasn't ready.
I organised a team to cook the quickest breakfast ever and dragged the Alpha, Beta & Gamma to the hospital wing. The head Omega came too and confirmed that my patients were the team who should have prepared breakfast. Alpha Leo was already furious, and the state of my patients left him completely speechless. I pointed out that none of what had happened to these poor girls was consensual, but the Warriors in this pack considered unmated Omegas as fair game, no matter what they said.
I showed him images I had of previous victims whose assaults had not led to any serious problems for the pack, though a couple of the girls had left rather than face their abusers. I was aware that I was stepping into the responsibilities of the Luna by raising this with the Alpha, but I could not let this treatment continue. I explained that I could identify the attackers by their DNA if necessary, but this treatment had to change throughout the pack. I also insisted that the female Omegas be allowed to train, to at least give them a chance of defending themselves. As no females in the pack received combat training at that time I did struggle to get that started, but I was persistent until all females were permitted to train if they wanted to.
Although my patients were able to identify their eight attackers, I carefully watched them enjoyable very merry Christmas, without attacking anyone else, but by New Year they were in the cells as we had DNA confirmation. Finally pack members started to show the Omegas a little more respect.
It was Star, many years later, who really showed the warriors just how tough and important the Omegas are.
