To stick with the chess analogy, Femi was extremely tired of being a pawn. It was the story of his life, to coin a cliche. Femi had never lived up to expectations and had failed at the academia he, according to his father, so badly needed. Without this so-called education, Femi would lose everything, and as such, his father had cut him off from the inheritance. Femi's mother had assured him that his father didn't mean it, but Femi wasn't as positive. It often seemed to Femi that his father hated him. Could Femi help it that he wasn't brought up in a slum in Africa? His father had made sure Femi never wanted for anything. How could they possibly turn out the same way?
