Chapter 8

3844 Words

Weeks went by without a word from Zachariah. Sadie took a job in Murfreesboro as an accountant, making twice as much as she had at the lumberyard. I got an apartment in Atlanta, so I would be closer to Emory. My residency was starting soon, and my first rotation was in the cardiac unit of the hospital. My days seemed to blur together. Between lectures, studying, and my rotations, sleep became a luxury. I called Sadie and Momma Beth nearly every day. On the weekends they came and stayed with me in my apartment, or I would go home. They constantly fussed over whether I was eating enough or sleeping enough. I found their concerns endearing, but at the same time almost annoying. I didn’t have time to worry about food or sleep. I hardly had time to breathe. Though, I would never tell them that.
