Chapter 2

Edited. Sparrow’s P.O.V Morning had come all too fast and I was still thinking about the conversation that my wife, Sadie and I’d had last night. I knew that she was right, that we needed to tell Brie everything, but I still felt that it was too soon. I mean what would happen if she stopped taking those pills and then she shifted, turning into whatever sort of rogue she was and killing everyone around her, that’s what I’m worried about. I sighed as I got out of bed and went to the bathroom, doing my business and getting in the shower. I knew that the Alpha would be sending over paperwork for me to sign and stamp, then send back to him, so I hurried to wash myself, then got out and dried off. I walked back into the bedroom and Sadie was just getting out of bed. “Give me a few minutes and I’ll be downstairs.” Sadie said, walking over to me and kissing my cheek. I nodded, kissed her back and got dressed in jeans and a pullover blue shirt that had a pocket on the right side. I left the bedroom and headed downstairs, where my good friend, Charlie, stopped me. “I was called to the Alpha’s office earlier to collect this paperwork for you.” Charlie said, handing me the paperwork. “Alright, I’ll do it now.” I replied, opening the door to my office. Sadie came down shortly after, smelling like fresh flowers and cut grass, that was her natural scent and I loved it. I walked into my office and tossed the paperwork down on top of my desk, then took my seat. Sadie sat down in front of my desk and we started going through the paperwork. I was filling out the work on the sheets, then signing it and stamping it. After a couple hours of working we were finally done and I handed the paperwork back to Charlie. “All done, give it all to the Alpha.” I said, sitting back in my chair and he nodded. Charlie left my office and I rubbed my eyes, tired of writing and reading. “Oh my Goddess.” Sadie gasped, making me look up at her. She was holding a piece of paper, not taking her teary eyes off it. “What? What is it?” I asked, worried. “Dad, mom, I guess by the time you read this I will be gone. I overheard everything you two said last night and what the hell is wolfsbane? You should have never kept stuff like this from me. I would have tried to listen, tried to have understood, but you never even gave me that choice, you took that from me. Sure I would have asked questions to understand better, but yet again you took that from me as well. Now you don’t have to worry about giving me a choice or telling me anything because I am out of here. Brie.” Sadie said, reading from the piece of paper. I stood up from my desk and took the piece of paper from her, reading it again and again, until the words made sense to me and stuck in my mind. I tossed it on the ground and ran out of my office, going upstairs to Brie’s bedroom to see for myself. I stood in the doorway and saw that her room had been ransacked. The drawers and closet doors were left open and the things that were inside were now gone. “Come on, she couldn’t have gotten far, we need to find her.” I said to Sadie, who was now standing right behind me. s**t, we should have told her, we should have told her everything and now she’s gone. She could hurt someone or worse, kill them. She could end up being killed. s**t, what have we done? Brie’s P.O.V I had no idea where I was, but I was tired. I had been driving through the night and the early hours of the morning, stopping only for food, gas, something to drink and of course to use the bathroom. It was worrying when I walked into a gas station because many would look at me and I swear they looked like they were sniffing the air, which meant they were some sort of supernatural creature, then they growled at me, so I would hurry up and leave. I didn’t want any trouble at all, all I wanted was answers, answers that my parents should have given me. Why did they keep this from me for so long? Why did they lie to me all this time? If I am so much trouble that they have to keep me from knowing the truth, then at least they won’t have to worry about me anymore, will they? After all, I’m eighteen years old now and if I decide to stop I want to make sure that I am as far away from them as possible because if they find me they will just want to drag me back to their pack and I don’t want that to happen. Hell, I wasn’t even a werewolf, I don’t even know what I am, but I do know that I am exhausted and all I really want to do is lie down in a bed and sleep. I wanted to drive for a few more hours to put even more distance between us, but then I saw the sign that I was coming up to. Gatlinburg, Tennessee. Well, that was far enough away from Summerfield, Florida and I had been driving for almost ten hours. The sun was coming up and I let out a huge yawn as I came up to a stop light. I looked around and saw a sign for a hotel. Great, I need to sleep for at least a few hours, I thought to myself. I waited for the light to turn green and then drove onto the hotel parking lot. I parked up, turned the engine off and got out, stretching my arms and whole body. My knees were hurting from driving, so I walked for a few minutes, trying to get the stiffness out. I grabbed the backpack I had filled with my money, not wanting to leave it in the car and then I walked into the hotel lobby. There was a woman at the front counter, looking at the computer screen, but when I walked up to the desk she looked up at me and smiled. “Hi there, how can I help you today, ma’am?” The woman asked, smiling at me. “Hello, can I have a room for a few hours and do you sell newspapers?” I asked and she nodded, pointing to the corner of the room. I walked over to the newspapers sitting on the table in the corner, picked one up and then walked back over to her. She typed a few things into the computer and handed me a key to room 101, then I paid her for the newspaper and the room. “Thank you, I’m just going to rest for a few hours and then I’ll be gone.” I said and she smiled. “It’s okay, sweetie. You look exhausted, so if you want to stay the whole night, you are more than welcome, just get your rest.” The woman replied and I nodded. I left the front lobby and went to my room, unlocking it and going inside, locking the door behind me. I opened the newspaper to look for anything that would be available for me to rent or to buy and after flipping through a few pages I found what seemed to be the perfect house. It was a small one bedroom house, but it was only four hundred dollars a month or I could rent to buy it, which was even better. I called the number on the listing and spoke to the woman who owned the house, who said that I could meet her at the house in a few hours and I quickly agreed. This seemed too good to be true, but I wasn’t going to pass it up. I set my alarm for two hours from now and laid down on the bed, falling asleep almost instantly. At first I thought I was dreaming, but then the weirdest of things happened, the man started talking to me as if I was really there. I was in an office, watching people coming and going, but even though they didn’t or couldn’t see me, I could see them. There was a man sitting behind a desk and he looked like he was a very important man. He was signing papers, making phone calls and reading something on his computer, but the whole time there was always someone else in the office with him, talking to him. When everything was done and the last person had left the man finally got up from his chair and stretched his arms and legs, but that’s when he looked in my direction. He tilted his head and rubbed his eyes like he was seeing things and I realised that he could actually see me. “Who are you? Why are you here? Are you a ghost?” He asked, standing there. I tried to answer him, but when I opened my mouth to speak it seemed like he couldn’t hear a single word I said. I watched as he started to pace back and forth, then he stopped and looked right at me. “You know in all my years, I have never seen a woman as beautiful as you are.” He said, reaching forward. He tried to touch me, but his hand went right through me and that’s when I woke up with a jolt. I sat up in bed, thinking about the dream or whatever that was I just had and then looked at the time on my phone. I only had another ten minutes left before my alarm went off, so I decided to get up and get ready. I did my business, washed my hands and face, freshening myself up and then went back into the bedroom. I grabbed the newspaper and my backpack, not wanting to leave anything behind, just in case my parents came here and tracked me down. I was being super careful and even bought a new phone on the way here, then got rid of my old one so that they couldn’t trace it and find where I was. I went back down to the lobby and handed my key back to the woman behind the desk, thanking her for the room and then left, getting into my car. I typed the address the woman gave me into my phone and drove off in the directions the sat nav was giving me. It only took me thirty minutes to get to the house and when I got there I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was. It wasn’t very big, but it was perfect. The house was in the woods with nothing and no one living around or near it, which was just what I wanted. I got out of my car, just as a woman came around the front of the house, smiling cheerfully at me. She looked to be middle aged, maybe in her early sixties and she had light grey hair with brown eyes. She was wearing a dress that swayed in the light breeze and held her hand out to me. “Hi, my name is Torie, it’s very nice to meet you.” She said and I took her hand, shaking it. “My name is Brie and likewise. I was wondering if I could rent to buy this place, I always wanted a place of my own and this place is just perfect. It’s only a one bedroom and that’s all I need.” I said and she smiled at me. “Well sweetie, you haven’t looked inside just yet, so come on in and let me show you around.” Torie replied and I nodded. We walked inside and she started showing me around, even though she didn’t need to because I was already sold on this place. The living room was a little small, but I didn’t mind because it was only me that was going to be living here. The bedroom was big and I loved how the walls looked like a barn, plus the bathroom was pretty big as well. We walked into the kitchen and I fell in love with it immediately. It was small, but had plenty of storage space, as well as a marble breakfast bar, a glass stove top and oven, an icebox that was just the right size for me and a sink right beside it, plus the cupboards were just the right height for me to put my dishes inside them. “This place is incredible.” I said, still looking at everything. “I tell you what, I’m tired of doing the upkeep on this place, so if you have twenty thousand dollars, then it’s yours and you can do whatever you want with it.” Torie said, looking over at me and smiling. I was completely shocked, but I didn’t have to think twice about it. I had that and more, but I wasn’t about to tell her that, so I just nodded and walked to my car. I grabbed my bag from the trunk and counted out the money, before hiding the backpack again and locking my car up. I walked back into the house and handed her the money, making her gasp at me. “Damn honey, how did you get this money?” She asked and I knew right away what she was thinking. “I didn’t steal it, Torie. I worked hard and saved it up.” I replied and she nodded. She counted out the money in front of me, then signed the deed and handed it over to me along with the keys to the house. “The house and land are now yours, congratulations. Now, from time to time you will hear a few animal noises, but it’s normal around here. It’s the country and you will get used to it. There are wolves, deer and rabbits, as well as other animals that come around here, so be careful, okay. Oh and never leave any food out because they will just keep coming back and they might even break into your house trying to get more, but they will destroy your house. Just remember to always be careful.” Torie said and I nodded. We shook hands and talked for a little bit more, then she left. I grabbed my backpacks and suitcases from the car and brought them inside, putting them in the bedroom. I was so happy that I picked this house and that Torie was such a fair person, but I was even more thankful that it at least had a couch and bed that looked brand new. I shut and locked the front and back door of the house, then went back into the bedroom and laid down. I was so tired that I could sleep for days, but I was so happy too.
