"Come home?" Matthias asked in shock. He had no idea what the man standing in front of him, who had identified himself as Ernest Darwin, was talking about.
Ernest nodded, bowing slowly again in absolute humility. "Yes, young Master."
Matthias' eyes widened in shock, unable to comprehend what was happening around him.
"This must be a mistaken identity. I'm just an orphan who’s struggling. I don’t deserve this treatment. My name is indeed Matthias Kane, and as far as I know, I’m the only Matthias Kane in my school. But I’m sure I’m not who you’re looking for."
Mr. Darwin chuckled lightly.
"We made no mistake, Young master. You are the young man we’ve been searching for all these years."
Matthias' mouth dropped open in shock. He could hear everything but nothing was making sense.
"How? Nobody knows me to be looking for me in the first place. I have no family, no home. I grew up in an orphanage, and when I was old enough, I left to start struggling through school. I have no family," he explained, believing it was all a mistake but Mr. Darwin remained insistent.
He gave Matthias a slight smile. "Young Master, it’s true you grew up in an orphanage, and your grandmother is very aware of that."
"My grandmother?" Matthias asked in shock, wondering when he had a grandmother.
He smiled widely at Matthias and nodded twice in a gentle way.
"Yes, your grandmother. What isn’t true is your assumption that you have no family. Your grandmother has been searching for you for years. Recently, we finally got a lead on you, and that’s how we found you here," he explained to Matthias whose heart was pumping really fast in uncertainty.
Matthias' head began to spin. He closed his eyes tightly to maintain his footing. When he opened them again, he hoped to find no one there so he could assume he was hallucinating. But Ernest Darwin was still there, smiling.
"You are the only heir to the Nelson Empire, and I must say that it is time to assume your position as the heir to your family's numerous establishments," Ernest said.
Matthias' heart stopped for a moment in shock. Did he just called the heir to numerous establishments?
"T-The N-Nelson Empire?" he stammered.
"Yes, young Master. I'm talking about the widest, most successful business empire in this side of the world." Mr. Darwin confirmed.
"Your grandmother, Madeline Nelson, has been searching for you ever since you were lost. She never gave up hope of finding you."
Matthias felt his knees go weak. "But... but..." he stammered, unable to articulate his words in a way that would make sense, but he was interrupted by Mr. Darwin.
"There were many obstacles," he explained gently. "But the important thing is that we have found you now. Your grandmother wants you to come home and live the life you deserve."
Matthias shook his head, still in disbelief. He had a thousand questions but couldn't find a way to get them out of his mouth.
"It’s a long story," Mr. Darwin said. "One that your grandmother will explain when you meet her. For now, please come with us. We have to take you home to her."
Matthias looked at the gentleman dressed in suit in front of him, then at the luxurious car, and finally back at Mr.Darwin...
He had nothing to lose and nowhere to go. They could not be kidnappers, judging by the way they dressed.
Taking a deep breath, he nodded. "Alright, I’ll come with you."
Mr. Darwin smiled warmly and motioned for Matthias to get into the car.
As they drove off, Matthias couldn’t help but feel strange. Maybe, just maybe, his life was about to change for the better.
As the car approached the mansion, Matthias' eyes were glued to the extravagant structure.
The white walls and massive gates studded with gems were unlike anything he had ever seen. He had been shocked by how mighty Rafael Vicenzo's father's mansion was, thinking it was the largest he would ever see.
But this mansion was like a collection of four or five such mansions fused together into one paradise. His mouth hung open as he stepped out of the car when it finally came to a stop.
Mr. Darwin grinned and gestured to the mansion. "Everything you see here, every block, every corner, and all the staff, including myself, are all under your payroll," he explained.
Matthias was stunned, struggling to believe what he was hearing. He thought to himself that this must be a dream or a mistake, and that once inside, he would be embarrassed when Madeline Nelson realized he wasn't her grandchild.
He felt tense and nervous, his palms sweating. As he stepped away from the car, he called out to one of the men in suits, "Please, let me take my backpack from the car."
Darwin responded, "There's no need for that. You're home now, and everything here is yours. You can get anything you want."
Matthias hesitated but insisted on having his backpack. One of the men who had accompanied Darwin rushed to get it for him.
Slinging it on his back, Matthias felt a small sense of reassurance, that was the only thing he knew really belonged to him. If anything happened to that bag, he'd lose everything he had.
Darwin then told him, "Now, you will officially meet your grandmother, Madeline Nelson."
Matthias gulped and followed Darwin silently. As they walked into the mansion, he was shocked to see an assembly of staff standing still, all bowing slightly to him. It all felt unreal.
Darwin chuckled lightly, seeing the expression of bewilderment on Matthias'face.
"They all stayed up late just to see what their new boss looks like," he whispered into Matthias'ears.
"Really?" Matthias asked, stunned.
They walked past the staff and through the corridor, Matthias' eyes trailing over the walls and the portraits hanging there.
Suddenly, they arrived in front of a door. Darwin knocked once, and an elderly voice called out, "Come in." Darwin turned to Matthias and nodded before walking in. Matthias followed with cold steps.
Immediately he set his eyes on the woman who looked to be in her 70s, he froze nervously. She wore expensive attire and gave out this strong air of authority that would command nervousness in anyone, especially one dressed like a pauper.
The woman herself paused, her hands trembling slightly as she set down the pen she had been using on the documents before her.
She slowly rose from her desk and put on her glasses. She approached them, her steps were careful.
"Darwin, I-Is this him?" she asked with a trembling voice, already getting emotional and on the verge of tears.
Darwin nodded. "Yes," he said, bowing slightly. "You can confirm it yourself from the mark."
Madeline Nelson stepped closer to Matthias, her eyes searching his face. "Please, child," she said softly, "show me your right wrist."
Matthias, still in shock, extended his right wrist. As she examined the small mark, a unique shape of a shield, tears welled up in her eyes. "It's him," she whispered, her voice breaking.
"This mark right here, I gave you this mark when you were very little. This is a representation the emblem of your father's consortium, the one he inherited from your late grandfather," Madeline explained, her voice trembling with raw emotions.
"I gave it to your father when he was born too, and I gave it to you as soon as he gave birth to you. It is a tradition in our family. It was to signal out the first sons of the Nelson family."
Matthias looked at the mark on his wrist, his mind racing. "I have had this mark ever since I was in the orphanage. I grew up seeing it on my wrist, but I never knew where it came from," he said, now realizing its significance. He was slowly accepting the possibilities of what Mr. Darwin had explained to him in the street where he was found.
Madeline continued, her voice breaking, "Your father turned out to be my only child, and you, his only child. Can't you see it? You're my grandson." Tears streamed down her face as she covered her mouth, overcome with emotion.
Matthias fell silent, pondering everything the elderly woman had said. Was it true that she was his grandmother? Did he really have a family now?
Just as these thoughts swirled in his mind, he noticed Madeline moving to her desk, searching through her files.
Suddenly, she pulled out a photo album and handed it to him. "Open it," she said gently.
His hands shivering, Matthias took the photo album and turned it around. The first photo he saw made him speechless. It was an exact copy of a photo he had been given at the orphanage. His mouth dropped open in shock.
"I don't understand. How can this be? How can this be possible?" he asked, his voice trembling as he traced the image of the little boy in the photo.
Silently, he unzipped his backpack and pulled out his own copy of the photo, showing it to Madeline and Mr. Darwin. His hands trembled as the realization hit him: this was all true. The mark, the picture—they proved it.
Desperate to confirm one more thing, he reached into his backpack and brought out an heirloom.
"I was given this at the orphanage. I have no idea how I got it," he said, holding out the object. Madeline broke down in tears, taking Matthias into her arms and holding him tightly.
"That was your mother's. She gave it to you when you were supposed to leave on a trip with your father. That was before the accident happened."
"After the accident, your mother died of a heart attack upon learning your father had died," Madeline said, her voice was filled with sorrow.
Matthias felt sad about the demise of his parents even though he never got to meet them. He only wished he was given the chance to meet them.
He had a family. He had a history. For the first time, he felt a sense of belonging and identity. Hugging his grandmother back, he whispered, "I can't believe this is real."
Madeline pulled back slightly, looking into his eyes. "It is real, my dear. You are home now. I have been waiting for you for so long."
Mr. Darwin, standing by with a gentle smile, added, "Welcome home, young Master. Welcome to your family.”
