Madeline turned around, holding Matthias' hand, and walked him over to the table where a document and a pen were placed.
"Son, on this table is the ownership document of your father's vast empire," she said to Mathias who glanced down at the table.
Matthias was still having a hard time processing everything. She gently guided him to sit down.
Mr. Darwin bowed slightly to her before taking his leave, giving Madeline and her grandson some time alone.
Matthias sat on the chair, while his grandmother took her seat opposite him.
"I'm old now, Matthias," she began, her voice was soft but still firm.
"I'm getting really tired and can no longer handle all the hassles of managing your late father's empire." She pointed to the document.
"This is a list of all the companies and groups under the Nelson Consortium. Have a look."
Matthias, feeling overwhelmed, glanced at the list. He knew nothing about businesses, and just seeing the extensive list of companies made his head spin.
His mouth dropped open when he saw there were 35 business entities listed in all, and the surprising fact was that each had at least 5 branches across different countries.
"Are all these yours?" he asked, incredulous. It shocked him that all these was owned by one person.
Madeline smiled and nodded. "Yes, they all belonged to me after your parents died. But now that you have been found, they belong to you. Every one of those 35 business entities, along with all the money in your father's personal and numerous business accounts, is yours."
Matthias hung his head, feeling strange and overwhelmed. He rubbed his forehead. He was in shock, the kind that made him speechless.
"I mean, a few hours ago, I was roaming the streets, homeless and hungry. And my life in school, I had been an errand boy, taking delivery tasks for as low as one dollar just to have something to eat. Still, it wasn't sufficient," Matthias said, his eyes blurring out in shock.
His hands folded to his chest as he felt really cold all of a sudden, remaining silent.
Madeline looked at him with empathy. She grabbed his arm from his chest and squeezed his hands tightly.
"I'm sorry that I was never there. I know it, but I still can't believe that you went through all that. I can't believe my own grandson, the heir to the Nelson Empire, is dressed in such clothes and has been looked down upon by even those who shouldn't walk on the same floor as him," she said.
Matthias sighed deeply, thinking about Paula and the pain he felt when he discovered she had cheated on him. He remembered how boldly she insulted him and admitted to leaving him because of his poverty.
His grandmother's voice brought him back from his thoughts.
"Now, no one will ever treat you like a disease anymore," she told him. "You are rich beyond anything you could ever imagine."
Matthias' eyes widened. "Rich beyond anything I could imagine?" he repeated, still trying to grasp the enormity of the situation.
"It's hard to believe, Grandma. Just this morning, I was struggling to find my next meal. And now... all of this?"
Madeline nodded, her expression softening with understanding. "Yes, all of this is yours. You have suffered enough, Matthias. Now it's time for you to step into the life you were always meant to have. You deserve this."
Matthias' heart raced as he looked around the lavish room. "I never thought I’d see a day like this. It’s overwhelming," he admitted, his voice trembling slightly.
"I know it’s a lot to take in," Madeline said gently.
"But you are strong, just like your father. You will learn, and you will thrive. We have all the time in the world to get you accustomed to your new life. And remember, you are not alone in this. I am here, and so is Mr. Darwin. We will help you every step of the way."
Matthias was stunned. "This must be a dream, right?" he asked, his brows drawn together in disbelief.
Madeline shook her head gently. "No, Matthias, this is not a dream. You are the rightful owner of the Nelson Consortium. The only reason you weren't recognized as such was because the person who rescued you from the accident didn't reach out to your family and instead registered you at the orphanage."
"You and I are the only living members of the Nelson family, and I am too old to handle everything now," she added, squeezing his hands gently.
She picked up the pen from the desk and handed it to him, turning the page to the ownership documents.
"Son, this is your time to rule," she said, her voice was filled with raw emotion.
"It's time to make your father and your parents proud. The only thing standing between you and your birthright is your signature on this document."
Matthias took the pen, his hands trembling. "Are you sure about this?" he asked, looking into his grandmother's eyes.
"Yes, my dear," she replied, her eyes glistening with tears. "You are my grandson, the rightful heir. Your parents would have wanted this. They would have wanted you to have everything they worked for."
Taking a deep breath, Matthias looked down at the document. With trembling hands he signed his name on the ownership papers.
Madeline reached across the table and placed her hand over his. "Everything belongs to you now, Matthias. Welcome home."
Matthias smiled, "Thank you, Grandma. I won't let you down."
"And before I forget, tomorrow is Jude Campbell's birthday ceremony and we are invited," Madeline said to Matthias who froze instantly. The name was not new in his ears.
"Wait!" Matthias said, shocked. "Is it the Jude Campbell I always hear about?"
Madeline chuckled. "Well, that depends on which Jude Campbell you're talking about."
Matthias knew Jude Campbell as the president's only son, a very popular figure, and he found it hard to believe that the president was inviting his grandmother to his son's birthday party.
"Jude, as in the president's son?" he asked incredulously.
Madeline seemed puzzled by his reaction. "Yes," she confirmed. "They always invite me because the president and his wife have been trying to get me to take their son under my wing since I own the most prosperous business entity on the continent."
"Wow!" Matthias was stunned.
Madeline continued, "Getting a spot in the Nelson businesses is tough, and the president and his family have been giving me preferential treatment just to get their son, who is studying accounting, a position in one of our business branches."
Matthias, curious, asked, "So, what are you going to do about it?"
Madeline chuckled again. "I would have done something if I were still the owner of the Nelson Consortium. Whoever I appointed in any of the branches would stay, but now the power is no longer in my hands. I have already informed the president and his family about the transfer of ownership to you, and any favor would have to be granted by my grandson."
Matthias was taken aback. "The ball is now in my court?" he asked, stunned by the sudden responsibility and power.
His grandmother nodded. "Yes, you are now in the position to decide whether the president's son gets a job in one of your companies or not."
He still couldn't believe it. "How come?" he muttered, trying to process everything.
Madeline nodded. "You should get ready for the meeting with the president's family tomorrow morning at birthday party, 10:00 am. "
Matthias' eyes widened as he remembered he had lectures the next day. "I need to be in school around that time," he said.
His grandmother asked, "Is it an urgent lecture?" He nodded. As they deliberated, he heard a beep from his phone. Glancing at his broken screen, he saw a notification from his departmental student group on w******p. He looked up, shocked. "The lecture has been cancelled," he said.
His grandmother smiled. "What a coincidence."
He nodded in relief.
His grandmother then said, "Get to the dining table, eat as much as you can. Everything here is yours." She snapped her fingers, and a lady with a gentle smile rushed in. She bowed slightly to Matthias.
"Mr. Nelson," she said, "I will take you to your room, show you around, and also serve you anything you would like to eat. Please, tell me where you would like to start?"
Matthias smiled, feeling a sense of belonging for the first time in a long while. "Let's start with the dining room," he said. "I'm really hungry."
The lady nodded and led him to the dining room, where a feast awaited him. As he ate, Matthias couldn't help but marvel at how much his life had changed in such a short time.
He had gone from being a struggling student with no place to call home to the heir of a vast empire, with decisions to make that could influence even the president's family.
9:00 AM - FRIDAY
Matthias felt like he had slept on a cloud the previous night. He didn't want to wake up but was forced to when the sun started rising, spilling light onto his face through the window.
He rolled on the bed, savoring its softness until he fell off the edge and landed on the floor. Just at that moment, Lisa walked in, the young girl assigned to assist him. She was shocked to see Matthias on the floor, trying to get up.
"Young Master, are you alright?" she asked, concerned.
Matthias nodded, getting to his feet and dusting himself off. He noticed the box in her hands—a gorgeous box with a golden emblem of the Nelson Consortium. She placed it on the bed.
"What's in the box?" Matthias asked, curiosity piqued as he got back up.
Lisa smiled and bowed lightly. "This is a special suit, tailored and customized specially for you for Jude Campbell's birthday party. Your grandmother thought you might need it, given the occasion and the short notice."
Impressed with his grandmother's foresight, Matthias thanked Lisa with a nod. Just as she was about to leave, she turned back.
"Oh, that reminds me," she said. "It's already 9:00 am, and the party starts at 10:30. Your grandmother asked me to remind you to be quick."
Matthias nodded. "Thank you, Lisa. I'll be ready soon."
As she was about to leave, Matthias turned his attention back to the suit, tracing the expensive fabric and design with his fingers. It was overwhelming.
"To be honest, I've never worn a suit before," he admitted to himself, feeling the weight of his new life pressing down on him.
He decided to ask Lisa to place an order for a pair of casual jeans and a t-shirt.
It took Matthias a few minutes to get dressed after the outfit was delivered to his room.
He and his grandmother arrived at Allison Event Hall, a multi-million dollar event center accessible only to the high-class society.
As they stepped out of the car and headed toward the grand entrance, Matthias received a text message from his school w******p group.
"Grandma, I need to reply to a text from school. With the music inside, I won't be able to concentrate," he said.
His grandmother nodded, smiling. "Take your time, dear."
He kissed her on the head and watched her walk inside. Matthias strolled toward a corner where there were several cartons of fruit juice for the guests. He picked one at random, opened it, and took a sip while replying to the messages on his old phone.
He had not had enough time to go shopping yet or placing orders for a new phone since it was only few hours since he got all that money.
"What?!"
Matthias heard a familiar voice. He looked up to see Paula, holding hands with her new boyfriend, Rafael Vicenzo. Paula's face twisted in irritation the moment her eyes met Matthias.
"What are you doing here?" she demanded, gritting her teeth. "Are you stalking me now? Following me around to beg for love? Wasn't it clear to you that I want nothing to do with a slum dweller anymore?"
"Why can't you just get it into your thick poverty-stricken skull, that a street rat like you doesn't deserve me? Huh!" She added, pissed just by seeing him.
Matthias remained quiet, watching her rant.
"I'm going to report you to the police if you keep stalking me," she threatened. "Why can't you just be the loser that you are and move on or find other girls who also dwell in the slum?"
Matthias took a deep breath, his face was surprisingly calm. "I'm not stalking you, Paula. I have every right to be here, just like you. So if you don't mind, I have to attend to something urgent."
Paula sneered. "Really? And how did you manage to get into a place like this? Did you sneak in?"
Paula scoffed, her voice was full of irritation. "There's no way a poor, dirty delivery guy like you could get into a place like this. This is for people who can actually afford to feed themselves."
Matthias remained calm, which only seemed to provoke her more. "Look at yourself," she snapped.
Matthias glanced down at his simple outfit. He had chosen it deliberately, even speaking directly to the store manager to get the least expensive jeans and t-shirt because he didn’t want to draw much attention at the party.
Paula, of course, had no idea about this. She shook her head, fists tightening. "You don’t belong here. You’re just here to stalk me. Get out!"
Ignoring her, Matthias turned his attention to his broken phone, intending to reply to his chat.
Paula, enraged by his indifference, slapped the phone out of his hand. The device hit the ground, its screen shattering completely. Matthias felt a surge of anger but remained silent.
"A peasant like you has no right to ignore someone like me," Paula spat, "especially when my boyfriend is a millionaire."
Rafael, noticing the juice can in Matthias' hand, gasped loudly. "Paula, I know why he's here. He came to steal food and drinks from the party."
Paula gasped too, then started screaming, "Thief! Security, there's a thief trying to steal from the president's son!"
Matthias was stunned, unable to respond before two security men rushed over.
"What's going on here?" one of the security men demanded, looking between Matthias and Paula.
"He's trying to steal food and drinks from the party!" Paula accused, pointing at Matthias.
The security men turned to Matthias, their expressions was stern. "Is this true? You are in big trouble, you peasant!”
