The unyielding moon
Seraphina stood on the edge of the cliff, her figure a striking silhouette against the full moon that hung above the forest. The cold wind swept through her long, silky white hair, sending it billowing behind her like a veil of frost. The chill didn’t bother her; she had long ago learned to embrace the cold. After all, what was strength if not forged in adversity? Below, the forest stretched for miles, dark and untamed, a reflection of the world she ruled. Her pack’s territory. Her home. But for all the power she held in her bones, there was still a voice inside her, one that whispered doubts—doubts planted by those who saw her only as a woman, not a leader. Her piercing blue ocean eyes, cold and sharp like the sea, scanned the horizon, the landscape bathed in the soft, silvery glow of the moon. The same moon that had watched over her since birth. The moon that had never asked her to bend or bow to anyone. Her mind drifted to the conversations she had overheard, the ones she wasn’t meant to hear. “She’s too young. Too inexperienced to lead on her own.” “A Luna must have a mate to be strong. Without him, the pack will fall apart.” “She’s too independent. She’s fighting her destiny.” Seraphina clenched her fists, the nails digging into her palms, but she didn’t flinch. Instead, she focused on the strength inside her. The power that surged with every breath she took, that pulsed beneath her skin. It wasn’t a power that came from a man. It was hers. All hers. Her father had tried to force her to marry—tried to arrange unions with powerful alphas, believing that only with a mate could she solidify her rule. He didn’t understand. He never had. The strength of a Luna was never meant to be defined by the bond she shared with a man. She was the leader, the protector, the force that kept the pack together. She had always known that, even when others doubted her. Her mother, ever the dutiful wife, had tried a different approach. “One day, you’ll realize you need someone to share the burden with, Seraphina. It’s not weakness to lean on another.” But Seraphina didn’t need anyone to lean on. Not a man, not even her mother. Seraphina wasn’t a weakness. She was a storm. A distant howl echoed from the woods behind her, a reminder that she wasn’t alone. Her pack, her wolves, were always close. They trusted her—most of them, anyway. There were whispers, of course, but there were always whispers. She was the Luna, and the role came with its fair share of enemies and traitors. They waited, watching, hoping she would slip. Hoping she would fall into the trap of dependence. Hoping she would make the mistake of looking for a mate. But Seraphina would never make that mistake. She straightened her back, her chin lifting defiantly toward the sky. I don’t need anyone to rule. The words rang in her mind, fierce and unwavering. She would prove them all wrong. The wind howled again, and Seraphina felt it as a challenge, a call to action. She stepped away from the cliff, her bare feet sure against the cold stone. There were battles to be fought, alliances to be made, and enemies to destroy. Every step she took was a step toward securing her place at the top, and no one—not her parents, not the pack, and certainly not any male alpha—would ever decide her fate. Her long white hair fluttered behind her like a banner as she descended the rocky path that led back to the pack’s territory. The scent of the earth, damp and rich with the promise of rain, filled her senses, but it wasn’t enough to distract her from the thoughts swirling in her mind. What did it mean to be Luna, if not the ultimate power? What did it mean to be herself, if the world would always try to shape her into something else? Into a version of herself that fit their narrow expectations. I will not bend, she told herself. At the base of the cliff, the forest opened up, revealing the expansive grounds of her pack’s compound. The grand stone walls of the main lodge loomed in the distance, but it was the surrounding trees, the untamed wilderness, that called to her. The pack depended on her to protect the land, to lead them through the challenges that lay ahead. But Seraphina wasn’t interested in sitting inside the walls, cozying up with politics. She was the one who would carve a path, who would shape the future with her own hands. As she entered the compound, her wolves greeted her with respectful nods, their eyes filled with admiration—or perhaps a hint of fear. Either way, she would not let their opinions sway her. She had her vision, and nothing would stop her from achieving it. The main lodge’s doors creaked open as she stepped inside. The flickering firelight cast shadows along the stone walls, and the heavy scent of pine and oak filled the air. Several pack members were gathered around the long oak table, speaking in hushed tones. The moment they saw her, all conversations ceased. “Luna,” one of the elders said, bowing his head slightly. Seraphina didn’t acknowledge the greeting. She didn’t need to. She was their Luna. Her presence alone was enough to command attention. She strode past them, her gaze sweeping the room. The heavy silence lingered as she passed her father, who sat near the head of the table, his face a mixture of concern and stubborn pride. He wanted her to marry. He believed in the traditional ways. But Seraphina could see it in his eyes—he feared that her refusal to comply might bring ruin. I will prove you wrong, Father, she thought, but she did not say it aloud. Instead, she turned her gaze to the large map on the wall, depicting the territories of the different packs. Her fingers traced the lines, the boundaries, the alliances, and the enemies. It was all coming together. Slowly but surely, her plan was falling into place. She would prove them all wrong.
