CHOSEN

A Dark Vampire College Romance

Zara Kane thought she had finally gotten lucky.

Broke, alone, and desperate for a way out, Zara receives a mysterious letter offering her a full scholarship to Ravenswood University—a prestigious university she barely knew existed.

At first, it feels like the opportunity of a lifetime.

But Ravenswood isn't like other universities.

There are no campus tours.

No normal admission process.

No clear information about the school.

And the students seem to know things Zara doesn't.

On her first day, strange things begin happening.

A mysterious raven carving cuts her hand—and seems to whisper her name.

Students stare at her as though they recognize her.

She begins dreaming about a mysterious man with silver eyes.

Then she meets Kael Drayton.

The school's mysterious Founder.

A man who looks impossibly young despite the fact that Ravenswood has existed for centuries.

A man who seems to know far too much about Zara.

And when Kael discovers the strange wound on her hand, his carefully controlled composure begins to crack.

Then Zara discovers something that changes everything.

Her missing sister attended Ravenswood the year before.

Kael knows what happened to her.

But he refuses to tell Zara the truth.

Instead, he warns her to stay away from the northern grounds, the forbidden buildings, and the secrets buried beneath Ravenswood.

Because Zara didn't simply receive a scholarship.

She was brought here for a reason.

And the deeper she digs into Ravenswood's secrets, the closer she gets to discovering what Kael really is...

—and why her blood seems to affect him in ways neither of them can explain.

Ravenswood chose Zara.

Now she has to find out why. 🩸🖤

CHAPTER 1: THE LETTER
The letter arrived on a Tuesday morning. Zara Kane was halfway through counting the money in her wallet when someone knocked on the door of her tiny apartment. She froze. There was no money left to count. Twenty-three dollars. That was everything she had until Friday. She stared at the bills spread across the kitchen table, hoping that somehow the amount would change if she counted it again. It didn't. Twenty-three dollars. Zara sighed and shoved the bills back into her wallet before standing. Another knock came. This one was firmer. “Coming.” She glanced around the apartment as she walked toward the door. The place was small enough that she could see almost everything from where she stood. The faded sofa. The tiny kitchen. The stack of unpaid bills beside her laptop. The peeling paint near the window that she'd been meaning to fix for months. She couldn't afford paint. She couldn't afford much of anything. Zara reached the door and looked through the peephole. A man stood in the hallway. He was wearing a black suit. Not the kind of suit people wore when they were heading to an office. This one looked expensive. Perfectly pressed. Perfectly fitted. And completely out of place in her building. Zara frowned. “Who is it?” “Delivery.” She wasn't expecting anything. She opened the door slightly, keeping the chain in place. The man looked at her. “Zara Kane?” “Yes.” He held out a large cream-colored envelope. “This is for you.” Zara stared at it. There was no company logo. No return address. No stamp. Only her name written across the front in elegant black ink. ZARA KANE Her stomach tightened. “Who sent this?” The man simply smiled. “You'll find out when you open it.” Zara didn't take the envelope immediately. “How did you get my address?” His smile didn't change. “It's all in the letter.” That answer somehow made her more uncomfortable. Still, curiosity won. She reached through the opening and took the envelope. It was heavier than she expected. The man nodded once. “Have a good day, Miss Kane.” Then he turned and walked away. “Wait.” Zara opened the door wider. “Excuse me?” But the man was already walking down the hallway. She watched him disappear around the corner. She stood there for several seconds. Then she slowly closed the door. Something about the entire thing felt strange. She looked down at the envelope again. There was something else she hadn't noticed before. A black wax seal covered the back. Pressed into the wax was a strange symbol. A raven with its wings spread wide. Zara's fingers tightened around the envelope. She had never seen the symbol before. At least, she didn't think she had. She carried the envelope to the small kitchen table and sat down. For several seconds, she simply stared at it. Maybe it was a mistake. Maybe someone had the wrong Zara Kane. That would actually make more sense. She turned the envelope over. Her name was definitely there. Zara reached for her phone and took a picture of it. She wasn't sure why. Maybe because the whole thing felt like something she'd eventually have to explain. Then she broke the seal. Inside was a single sheet of thick paper. She unfolded it carefully. Her eyes moved across the first line. And then she stopped breathing. Dear Miss Kane, We are pleased to inform you that you have been selected for a full academic scholarship at Ravenswood University. Zara blinked. She read the sentence again. Then again. “Ravenswood?” She had never heard of the university. She continued reading. The scholarship covered tuition. Accommodation. Books. Meals. Transportation. Everything. Her hands began to shake. This couldn't be real. She grabbed her phone and quickly opened her email. Nothing. She searched her application history. She had applied to dozens of universities over the past year. Colleges in New York. Boston. Pennsylvania. A few in California. Most had rejected her. Some had never responded. A few had offered partial scholarships that she couldn't afford to accept. She had almost given up. Her dream of attending university had slowly started turning into something she told herself she could live without. But this letter was offering her everything. There was only one problem. Zara looked back at the paper. She couldn't remember applying to Ravenswood. Not even once. She frowned. Maybe she'd forgotten. She had filled out so many applications that it was possible. Still, something didn't feel right. She picked up her phone again and searched the name. Ravenswood University. The results loaded. Zara waited. Then frowned. There were only a few scattered references. An old article mentioning the university. A forum post from someone asking whether Ravenswood was even real. Another page with a blurry photograph of what looked like a large stone building surrounded by trees. Then nothing. Zara scrolled. No campus tour videos. No student reviews. No official social media accounts. No recent photographs. No application portal. No rankings. Nothing that a normal university should have. She searched again. Ravenswood University New York. The results were almost identical. Zara stared at her screen. “That is weird.” She clicked on one of the forum posts. The page was old. Someone had asked: Has anyone actually attended Ravenswood? The replies were stranger. My cousin got accepted. Then the university disappeared from her email. Another person had written: You don't apply to Ravenswood. Zara's eyebrows pulled together. Then the page suddenly stopped loading. She refreshed it. Nothing. “Seriously?” She tossed the phone onto the table. Maybe the university was private. Maybe it simply didn't advertise. That didn't explain the scholarship. Or the letter. Or why she couldn't remember applying. She returned to the envelope and pulled the letter closer. At the bottom was an address. Ravenswood University Ravenswood Estate New York Underneath it was a date. Her enrollment date. Two weeks from now. Zara leaned back in her chair. For the first time that morning, she smiled. Maybe this was her way out. A chance to start over. A chance to leave behind the apartment with peeling walls, unpaid bills, and the constant fear of not knowing what tomorrow would bring. She had spent her entire life struggling. She was tired of choosing between what she needed and what she could afford. University was supposed to be her escape. Maybe this was it. Maybe, just maybe, something good had finally found her. Zara picked up the letter again. Her eyes moved to the final paragraph. Your acceptance is subject to your arrival and registration at Ravenswood University. She nodded slowly. Then came the sentence that made her smile disappear. Please do not attempt to locate the university before your assigned arrival date. Zara stared at it. “What?” She read it twice. Then a third time. Why couldn't she find the university herself? Why was there almost no information about it? And why had they selected her when she couldn't even remember applying? She should have been suspicious. She knew that. Every instinct in her body was telling her that something wasn't right. But the scholarship was everything she had ever wanted. And sometimes, when you had spent your entire life struggling, an opportunity didn't have to make sense before you accepted it. It just had to be real. Zara folded the letter carefully and placed it back inside the envelope. She looked at the black raven stamped into the wax. For a strange moment, she felt as though the bird was watching her. She shook the thought away. “I'm overthinking this.” She stood and walked toward the window. Outside, the city moved like it always did. Cars passed. People hurried down the sidewalk. Someone shouted at a taxi. Everything looked normal. Everything felt normal. Zara had no idea that the moment she accepted that scholarship, her ordinary life had already ended. Because Ravenswood University didn't accept students. It chose them. And somehow... it had chosen Zara.
