A time for every purpose under heaven, the Bible wisely says. The challenge is to discern for ourselves at each point what the purpose is. There are times to laugh, there are times to cry, but sometimes we confuse them. Sometimes, something we fervently seek eludes us and its lack brings us to the edge of despair, but later we see that, in being forced to seek elsewhere, we find our heart’s true desire. Other times, the very thing that seems to bring us joy is, in the next moment, snatched from us and we wonder at the cruelty of the joy because, in the sudden absence of the source of our joy, the grief is too much to bear.
