Chapter One:The Journal That Changed Everything
The aroma of freshly brewed coffee drifted through Bloom & Brew Café, wrapping itself around every customer like a warm embrace. Outside, the rain fell gently against the large glass windows, turning the busy streets of Lagos into a blur of headlights and shimmering reflections. Inside, soft jazz played in the background. Some people came to the café for the coffee. Others came for the pastries. But Elena Brooks came because it was the only place where her thoughts made sense. She sat in her favorite corner, the one beside the window, her caramel latte untouched as her fingers danced across the pages of a brown leather journal. To anyone watching, she looked like a young woman writing in her diary. But it wasn't a diary. It was a collection of letters. Letters to a man she had never met. She smiled softly before writing the familiar words. Dear Future Husband, Today was ordinary. Nothing exciting happened. I sold three journals, spilled coffee on my favorite sweater, and listened to Grandma complain that I work too much. If you're having an ordinary day too... I hope you know that ordinary days can still become beautiful memories. Maybe one day we'll laugh about days like this together. She paused, twirling her pen. A tiny smile appeared on her lips. "Still writing to your imaginary husband?" Elena looked up and laughed. Zoey Brooks stood in front of her table with two shopping bags hanging from her arms. "You scared me!" "I've been standing here for almost a minute," Zoey said dramatically. "You were too busy flirting with a notebook." "It's called writing." "It's called being single." Elena burst into laughter. "You'll never change." "I hope not," Zoey replied as she sat down. "Because somebody has to remind you that there are actual men walking around Lagos." "There are." "So why are you writing to one you haven't met?" Elena closed her journal and shrugged. "I don't know... maybe it's silly." "No," Zoey said, surprising her. "It's actually kind of sweet." Elena blinked. "You've never said that before." "I know." Zoey leaned forward with a grin. "But imagine if one day some handsome man accidentally reads one of those letters." Elena's eyes widened. "I would die." "Oh, I would pay to see your face." "Zoey!" "I'm serious! Imagine him reading, 'Dear Future Husband...'" Elena grabbed a sugar packet and threw it at her cousin. They both laughed so loudly that a few customers turned to look at them. The barista smiled from behind the counter. This wasn't unusual. The cousins always filled the café with laughter. After another twenty minutes of teasing, Zoey stood. "I have to go. Mom will kill me if I'm late." Elena nodded. "I'll stay a little longer." "You and your journal." "You and your drama." Zoey winked. "One day, those letters will change your life." Elena rolled her eyes. "I seriously doubt that." If only she knew. The rain had almost stopped by the time Elena packed her things. She slipped her phone into her bag, tucked her pen behind her ear, paid the bill, and hurried toward the door. Halfway outside, her phone buzzed. Grandma ❤️ "Oh no..." She answered while trying to cross the street. "Grandma, I'm on my way!" "My dear, don't forget the bread I asked you to buy." "I won't." "And don't let this rain soak you." "I promise." She smiled as she ended the call and rushed toward the bakery across the road. In her hurry... She forgot one thing. Her journal. Still resting quietly on the café table. Waiting. Twenty minutes later... The bell above the café door chimed again. A tall man stepped inside. His charcoal-grey suit was perfectly tailored, though a few drops of rain clung to the shoulders of his coat. He wasn't the kind of man who demanded attention. Yet somehow... The room noticed him anyway. "Good evening, Mr. Kingsley," the manager greeted with a respectful smile. Adrian gave a small nod. "The usual?" "Yes." Black coffee. No sugar. He chose the empty table by the window. As he pulled out the chair, something caught his attention. A brown leather journal. He frowned. Someone had left it behind. He picked it up carefully. No name on the cover. Just a small pressed daisy tucked between its pages. He looked around. "Did anyone leave this?" The waitress shook her head. "No, sir. The young lady who sat there left about twenty minutes ago." "I'll hand it in." He opened the cover, hoping to find a phone number or a name. Instead... His eyes landed on the first line. Dear Future Husband... His fingers froze. He should close it. Immediately. He knew that. But one sentence caught his attention. If you're having an ordinary day too... I hope you know that ordinary days can still become beautiful memories. For reasons he couldn't explain... He smiled. Just a little. Then, without reading another word, he gently closed the journal. He whispered to himself, "I hope I find you."
