Chapter Four:The Man She Couldn't Thank

722 Words
Elena stood outside Paper Bloom long after the black Mercedes had disappeared into the afternoon traffic. She tightened her grip on the journal resting against her chest. She hadn't even gotten the chance to say thank you. With a soft sigh, she walked back into the shop. Zoey looked up from arranging a bouquet of fresh daisies near the entrance. "So?" Elena smiled, lifting the journal. "I got it back." Zoey gasped dramatically. "I knew it!" She rushed over and hugged Elena. "Who returned it?" "I... don't know." "You don't know?" Elena shook her head. "A man came. He said his boss found it." "His boss?" "Mmm-hmm." "And you didn't even ask for his name?" "I forgot." Zoey stared at her in disbelief before laughing. "Only you, Elena Brooks." "What?" "You've been crying over this journal since yesterday, and when it finally comes back, you forget to ask who returned it." Elena laughed too. "I guess I was just happy to have it back." Zoey folded her arms. "If it were me, I'd have baked him cookies." "You don't even know how to bake." "I'd buy cookies." The two women burst into laughter. Meanwhile... The elevator doors opened on the top floor of Kingsley Group Headquarters. Employees greeted Adrian as he walked past. "Good afternoon, sir." "Good afternoon." He acknowledged everyone with the same calm smile before entering his office. His assistant, Daniel, followed behind with a stack of files. "Miss Brooks was very grateful." Adrian looked up. "Was she?" "She asked me to thank you." A small smile appeared on Adrian's face. "I'm glad." Daniel hesitated. "Sir..." "Yes?" "You could have returned it yourself." Adrian loosened his tie as he walked toward the window. "I didn't want to make her uncomfortable." Daniel nodded slowly. That sounded exactly like Adrian. Always thoughtful. Always careful. Sometimes... Too careful. That evening... Business was slow at Paper Bloom. Elena sat behind the counter, carefully turning the pages of her journal. Nothing seemed out of place. No folded corners. No missing pages. She let out a relieved breath. Then... Something caught her eye. A tiny white card slipped from between the pages. She frowned. "I don't remember putting this here." She picked it up. There was no name. Just one short sentence written in neat handwriting. You write beautifully. Elena stared at the words. Her heart skipped. She turned the card over. Blank. No signature. No clue. Zoey walked over. "What is it?" Without saying a word, Elena handed her the card. Zoey read it once. Then twice. Her eyes slowly widened. "Wait..." She looked at Elena. "Did..." She lowered her voice. "...did the man who found your journal leave this?" Elena swallowed. "I don't know." For some reason... She couldn't stop smiling. Not because someone had complimented her writing. But because whoever found her journal had been gentle enough to return it... And kind enough to leave behind only six words. Nothing more. Nothing less. She carefully placed the card back inside the journal. She didn't know why. But somehow... It already felt like a memory she never wanted to lose. Across the city... Adrian stood on the balcony of his penthouse. The cool evening breeze brushed against his face. He looked at the city lights stretching endlessly before him. Then his phone buzzed. It was his mother. "Adrian." "Hi, Mom." "You'll be at dinner on Friday?" "I'll be there." "Good." There was a brief silence. Then she asked gently, "You sound... lighter today." Adrian frowned. "Do I?" "You do." He looked out over the skyline again. For reasons he couldn't explain... He thought about a brown leather journal. About soft handwriting. About the name Elena Brooks. He smiled without realizing it. "No," he said quietly. "I think it's just been a good day." His mother smiled on the other end of the phone. Sometimes... A mother's heart notices things long before her son does. The next morning, Elena unlocked the door to Paper Bloom as usual. She had barely switched on the lights when someone pushed the door open. The bell chimed softly. A tall man stepped inside. His back was to her as he looked around the shop. "Good morning," Elena said with a warm smile. "Welcome to Paper Bloom." The man slowly turned around. For a brief second... Neither of them spoke.
