Chapter 7- Happy Birthday

I grabbed my cellphone and blanket and made my way through the dark cabin to the front door. The cabin we were renting had a large front porch facing the forest. I made my way to the top of the steps and wrapped the blanket around me. I looked at my phone for the time June 21 12:15 am and silently wished myself happy birthday. I couldn't help but be sad at the fact that my life could have been so different if my parents didn't die 16 years ago. As I sat there considering the new details of the dream I honestly thought I was going crazy questions swirling in my head.

"Could that have been me?"

"Are the wolves symbolic?"

"Werewolves?"

"Who was the boy?"

"Why did they want the child?"

The nearly full moon illuminated the forest around me and I felt safe and at home here. I sat listening to the sounds around me as I slowly relaxed when I heard a twig snap in the nearby treeline. The smell of the forest after the rain hit me and looking up I saw a large black wolf , just like the one in my dreams and this morning, step out from the trees.

"Mate" a voice in my head whispered as I locked eyes with the wolf.

Okay what the heck was that? Where did that voice come from? I thought to myself.

"Don't be afraid. I am Mai you will understand soon enough" the voice came again.

Oh great I get voices in my head for the 18th birthday I laughed to myself.

I felt safe with this wolf here and again held out my hand to it. The wolf sat down and I slowly approached it as not to scare it.

John Luke's POV

I had just taken a shower and headed to my office when Jack mind linked me again.

"Alpha there was a scream from inside the cabin" He said quickly.

"On my way. Did you see anything?"

"Just a scream and lights came on in 2 rooms"

I quickly ran for the door shifting as I hit the yard. Oclan ran as fast as he could to reach his mate not knowing what was happening.

We reached the cabin and saw Sadie sitting on the porch curled up in a blanket alone. I dismissed Jack and just watched as she sat there. I could smell fear rolling off her, everyone else had fallen back to sleep.

Oclan and I both wanted to comfort our mate, we stepped forward to see her better but stepped on a twig. Sadie's head shot up looking our direction then holding out her hand just like this morning. I could feel her relaxing at the sight of us in the trees. Oclan slowly stepped towards her only to sit waiting for her to come to him. It wasn't long before she was standing just before me her hand outstretched, Oclan sniffed at her hand giving it a quick lick. After the lick she began to pet Oclan sending sparks cascading over us, she pulled her hand back looking at it confused but continued to scratch between our ears. Oclan purred in my head at the affection shown by our mate

"I can feel her wolf now JL" purring.

"Can you speak to her?" I chuckled at the brute of a wolf purring.

I knew I could probably mind link Sadie since she was a pack member but didn't want to scare her, but mated wolves shared a special bond able to speak without either human knowing.

"Mai, mates name is Mai!" He bounced around in my head as he learned her name from her.

After a few minutes of scratches at the wood line Sadie began walking towards the porch leaving us sitting on the ground. She took several steps before turning, patting her leg and saying "come on boy". Oclan quickly padded up beside her and we followed her back to the porch. Oclan and I both knew in that moment that we would follow this woman to the ends of the earth if she asked us too.

She sat on the bottom step and motioned Oclan to sit beside her. Oclan sat beside her and she nuzzled into our neck whispering "my protector". My heart swelled at her name for Oclan, especially since she didn't know just how true that was. Eventually Sadie fell asleep on the porch, I pulled the blanket around her with my muzzle and Oclan and I stood watch over our mate. As the sun started to peak over the horizon I nuzzled her awake. After being awoken by a wolf Sadie wasn't scared but happy, she gathered her things and slowly made her way inside and I walked back towards the treeline.

"Patrick do you mind heading over to the cabin to keep watch?" I mind linked

"You got it Alpha be there in a few"

After about 15 minutes Patrick showed up and took over the watch from me. I headed back to the pack house to get ready to go out for lunch.

As I walked up to the pack house I saw my parents truck and headed inside.

"Mom? Dad?" I called out as I walked into the house.

"Kitchen JL!" My dad responded from the room to my left.

"y'all are here early." I laughed

"We heard you left in the middle of the night so we wanted to know what happened" my mom replied while pouring a cup of coffee and sliding it to me.

"You look horrible son" my dad laughed "I'm assuming you got no sleep"

"Nope there were some rogues by the cabin early last night. Jack and I took care of those easily but around midnight Jack said he heard a scream. I headed that way as quick as I could and found Sadie sitting on the porch terrified. Oclan and I kept her company and calmed her down letting her sleep on us and headed back" I stated drinking down the coffee.

"Is she safe now?" Mom asked

"Yes mom. Patrick is keeping watch right now so that I can get a quick shower and hopefully a nap before lunch."

"Well head up son we will see you before lunch."

I headed towards the stairs before turning "her wolf is named Mai" I yelled over my shoulder feeling like my parents should know that.

I bounded up the stairs headed to my bathroom and took a quick shower. After my shower I walked into my closet throwing on jeans and a black T-shirt. I also grabbed a small black duffle bag throwing a few extra sets of clothes in and heading down to my office. In my office I grabbed a small teddy bear that sits on the bookshelf behind me and the picture off my desk that showed myself, Sadie and our parents, and added those to the bag.

I headed up to my room to get in a quick nap. I had just laid down when my phone dinged and Sadie's name appeared on the screen.

*I got the girls to agree to burgers so hope it lives up to the hype you gave it lol if not neither of us will hear the end of it.*

I laughed at her message and sent off a quick reply

*Happy birthday Sadie. Hope you have a good day today and trust me it will lol*

*Thank you! Any chance we will run into each other today?*

*You're welcome. Not sure I know I will be in town because I have workbut not sure how my meetings land today.*

*Well maybe it will work out*

*I will try to move stuff around just for you birthday girl* I smiled to myself as I typed. She actually wanted to see me.

I knew I needed to clear my schedule both with the pack and at the architectural firm founded by Uncle Sean and my dad that our pack ran. As I checked my schedules there was nothing that couldn't wait until tomorrow and went about moving everything. I called the office and asked my secretary to cancel everything and let everyone have the day off.

Before I knew it the clock on my phone said 11am. I mind linked Cillian, Andrew and Jack to head over since they were going to lunch with us too. My plan was to have them distract her sister and friends while I spent some time talking to Sadie and telling her about her parents once my parents confirmed who she was.

We loaded up in 2 SUVs and headed towards town to get lunch at Baloos.
