Inside the royal medical tent, chaos had given way to sheer, unadulterated terror. Moments before, after another deafening roar of agony shook the tent walls, the head royal physician and his entire staff had bolted out of the entrance, pale-faced, frantic, and shouting in panic that the King’s wolf was too unstable to approach.
The silver poison had pushed Leo past the brink of endurance. He was suffocating in pain, his mind trapped in a violent, feverish haze.
Outside, the royal commanders and General Vance didn't dare step foot near the tent. Instead, they cowardly retreated to the safety of their own command quarters, already huddled over maps to scheme about what they would do if the King died by morning—calculating how to manipulate the power vacuum, cover up their own tactical failures, and keep the Omegas suppressed before the enemy forces closed in.
Abandoned by his own court, left to suffer in agonizing isolation, Leo was entirely alone.
And that was precisely when Madelaine made her move.
Slipping Through the Lion's Den
The camp was shrouded in the deep, silent hours past midnight. Cloaked in the darkness of the shadows, Madelaine moved like a ghost. She slipped past the outer perimeter patrols, using her knowledge of the camp's blind spots to evade the heavy guard rotation. Two elite royal guards stood directly outside the king’s tent entrance, pacing nervously.
Without making a sound, Madelaine scaled the rear canvas wall of the tent. With a swift, silent flick of her dagger, she sliced a narrow vertical slit into the thick fabric, slipping through the gap like smoke before the guards even realized a breeze had shifted.
Inside, the air was thick with the suffocating smell of copper, sweat, and scorched skin.
Madelaine froze, her breath catching in her throat as she took in the horrifying state of the Alpha King. Leo was collapsed across the medical cot, caught in a monstrous, half-shifted state. The upper half of his body remained human, slick with cold sweat and wracked with muscle spasms, but his lower limbs had involuntarily morphed into massive, thick wolf paws, digging frantically into the wooden floorboards as if trying to tear the earth apart.
Thick, heavy leather restraints had been hastily buckled around his wrists and torso to keep him from destroying the tent—or tearing himself to pieces.
As Madelaine took a soft step forward, the floorboard creaked.
Instantly, Leo’s head snapped up. His dark, bloodshot eyes locked onto her. A low, demonic snarl ripped from his raw throat, his wolf surging forward with a primitive, feral rage. He thrashed violently against the leather straps which were tied around his hands by the physicians, his muscles straining to the breaking point. If those bonds hadn't held him back, he would have lunged and torn her throat out in a fraction of a second.
"Grrr... Get... out!" Leo choked out, his voice a gravelly, agonizing roar. "Stay back... I'll kill you..."
Madelaine stood her ground. She didn't flinch. Instead, as she looked at the mighty Alpha King—brought down so low by the jealousy of his own people and the agonizing poison of the silver—a deep, aching wave of pity washed over her. The fierce, untouchable ruler was reduced to a caged, suffering beast.
"Shh, my king. It's alright," Madelaine whispered softly, her voice carrying a soothing, melodic warmth that cut through the madness in the tent. "I'm not going to hurt you. I'm here to save you."
The Healing Touch
Slowly, carefully, Madelaine stepped closer to the cot. Every time Leo’s wolf thrashed, she paused, letting him hear her steady breathing until the wild panic in his eyes flickered down just a fraction.
She reached into her pouch, pulling out the small glass vial of the secret Omega herbal ointment she had brewed. Popping the cork with her thumb, a cool, earthy, sweet-scented vapor drifted into the air, instantly calming the aggressive edge of the silver toxins.
Madelaine reached out, her hand hovering gently over his chest where the silver had burned deep, blistering gashes into his skin.
When her fingertips first brushed his burning flesh, Leo let out a sharp gasp, his body arching off the cot as a fresh wave of pain hit him.
"Easy... I've got you," she murmured soothingly.
With infinite care, Madelaine scooped a generous amount of the glowing emerald-green ointment onto her palms. Gently, she began to massage the salve over his chest, tracing the jagged, silver-burned trails. Her touch was tender yet firm, working the medicinal herbs deep into his pores.
As the Omega antidote made contact with the toxic silver, a faint, soothing hiss echoed in the tent. The burning poison began to neutralize, the jet-black veins beneath Leo’s skin slowly fading back to a healthy hue.
Leo stopped thrashing. The agonizing fire that had been tearing through his nervous system began to cool, replaced by a profound, numbing relief. His heavy eyelids fluttered, the feral darkness in his eyes receding as exhaustion finally claimed him. His massive frame went limp against the cot, his breathing steadying into a slow, deep rhythm.
Madelaine continued applying the soothing salve down his arms and torso until every trace of the silver burns was treated. She wiped the sweat from his forehead, her fingers brushing softly against his dark hair.
Looking down at the sleeping, vulnerable King, Madelaine knew there was no turning back. She had saved him from the silver, but the real war—the battle for his heart and the salvation of her people—was only just beginning.
