Owen’s POV
I was surprised to see her standing there but even more surprised that I didn’t smell an ounce of fear coming from her. I inhaled deeply and was met with the smell of a she wolf. No wonder she wasn’t surprised. She turned and grabbed a pair of shorts from behind a tree and tossed them in my direction.
“Thanks” I said as I quickly pulled them on. “What are you doing out here this late at night?”
“I could ask you the same thing but it should be obvious that I’m out for a run. It’s a full moon and I’m honestly surprised you didn’t run into anyone else other than Mike and his pack of wussies.”
I smiled at this. I like this girl. She seems confident and intelligent. Not just because she saw Mike as the p****y he is but her aura gave off something more. She was definitely a ranked wolf.
“Luckily, anyone else you would have encountered wouldn’t have given you any grief. This area is usually calm. It is pretty quiet unless it is a full moon. Tonight everyone was a little rowdier than usual because there was wolf grade alcohol at the party we were at. I left before it got too crazy and saw the whole interaction with Mike. Are you a visiting alpha? I thought I had met all the alphas attending school here.” She asked.
I laughed again. “I’m not attending school. I’m just passing through. I am traveling around with permission of the Chancellor.”
At this she started cracking up. I couldn’t help the puzzled look on my face. I knew she wasn’t laughing at me but something I said set her off. I let her laugh for a couple of minutes until she got a hold of herself.
“I don’t understand. What is so funny?”
“I’m so sorry.” She chuckled. “The Chancellor rarely allows rogues to wander his territory. It just isn’t worth the hassle with dealing with all the Alphas. If you knew the Chancellor you would understand how hard it is to believe that.”
She wasn’t aware that I did indeed know the Chancellor and knew what an exception he had made for me. But how did she know so much about him? I just stared at her as she gathered herself and gave me a serious look.
“Ok so now that I had a laugh, tell me the truth.”
“I am telling you the truth. I don’t lie. I have no need to. How would you know who the Chancellor has given permission to anyways? I know for a fact you aren’t his mate.”
“And how would you know that?”
“Well for one, you are too young. The Chancellor has already met his mate and has been happily mated for over 20 years. Secondly, I know you aren’t her because I’ve met her. She has reddish blond curly hair that she keeps wrapped in a bun, gray eyes with a scar over her right ear.”
This stopped her in her tracks. She stared at him with her mouth open in shock.
“How could you possibly know that?”
“I told you. I’ve met her before.”
She pulls out her phone and dials a number. She turns back to me as if she is sizing me up. “What is your name?”
“Owen.”
The line stops ringing and after a moment a man answers the phone. “Sydney! Are you ok? Why are you calling so late?” She motions to me to stay quiet as she speaks to the man on the phone.
“I had a question to ask you and it couldn’t wait till morning. Was there a rogue alpha that was given permission to travel in this territory? If so, what is his name?”
“That’s what this is about?? Yes, there is a lone alpha that is traveling right now. His name is Owen and he has my complete support and blessing. Why?”
“No reason. I’m sorry I woke you. Go back to bed. I love you daddy.”
Daddy?!?! No wonder she is so confident. This is the Chancellors daughter. Now it was my turn to look at her in shock.
“I thought his daughter was like 15. I had no idea you were going to school here. Where are your guards?”
“I don’t travel with guards. My body wash and lotion have special herbs that dull my scent so nobody knows I have regal blood. Nobody knows I am the Chancellor’s daughter. Most of my life I have lived as the daughter of one of the Royal warriors. From a young age it was decided it would be safer for me to keep my identity a secret. After my mother’s best friend was murdered she became a bit paranoid. I don’t mind at all. It allows me to live a normal life until I have to step up to my responsibilities of the next Chancellor.”
I’m still in shock but slowly pulling myself together. I feel a connection to this girl. Not a mate bond but something different. As though she should be under my protection. I decided while I was in this area I would keep an eye out for her.
“How did you get permission from my father. I have only heard of him granting one person that kind of freedom and he was related to the King and Queen and was travelling looking for his mate.”
“I’ve known your parents all my life. Your mother was my mother’s best friend. The same friend you mentioned earlier. Her name was Elise.”
“Wow. I’m so sorry. It broke my mother’s heart when she heard about it. When her and my father finally made it down here there was nothing left. Their pack house was burnt to the ground and a new pack had taken over their territory. They told me how they were heartbroken about your death as well until they heard you had survived months later and that you refused to move to the palace and chose to live as a lone alpha. My mother loved yours so much that she named me after her. My full name is Sydney Elise Agapov.”
“It really is a small world but I’m glad I met you Sydney. Maybe since I’m sticking around, you can join me on runs. I haven’t been getting out as much as I would like and I don’t know any wolves in town.”
She looked at me as if she was going to say something but was holding back. She has a very expressive face that turned serious all of a sudden.
“My roommate is a human. She has no idea I am a wolf, that wolves exist or that she is surrounded by them.”
“So what’s the problem? There are other humans in this territory. She can’t be the first human you’ve encountered.”
“There is something different about her. Something in me wants to tell her about who we are. As if I need to tell her but I’m afraid. I’ve never revealed our secret to a human. I’ve had other human friends in the past but have never wanted or even considered telling them but I’ve bonded with her. She is special.”
“Well I would like to meet her. If we are going to be friends then maybe I can help. I’ve spent more time in my human form than not so I’m used to blending in. Why don’t we get together soon and you can introduce me.”
She clapped her hands excitedly. “We are supposed to go on a hike this morning. Why don’t you meet us after that and join us for breakfast. There is a little café near our dorm called Angel’s and it is wonderful.”
“Sounds good. I need to look for an apartment or a room to rent since I plan on sticking around for a while so breakfast in the middle of town is perfect.”
She opened her phone and handed it to me and I quickly typed in my phone number and name and handed it back to her.
“Great. I will give you a call when we are heading that way so you can meet us there. I’m excited for you two to meet. She has already become my best friend and I know you will like her too. She is so sweet and funny. I guarantee that she will have you cracking up during breakfast. I have a good feeling about this.”
I smiled at that and nodded my head. Something told me she was right. We headed in different directions as I headed to my car that was still in the gym parking lot and she headed towards her dorm. After my run and confrontation I wanted to sleep in a bed so I headed to the nearest hotel and was thankful it wasn’t rundown.
Ally’s POV
I was just about to fall asleep when I heard Syd unlock the door to our dorm. I sat up and expected to see her tumbling in after a long night drinking and partying. To my surprise, she walked in just as she had walked out. She was put together and didn’t look at all hung over. The only difference was that her hair was now pulled into a messy bun.
“I wish I had your tolerance and quick recovery. If I was doing shots and partying, I would be hung over until at least Sunday.” I joked as I switched on the bedside lamp.
“I’m so sorry. Did I wake you?” She asked as she starting taking her clothes off and throwing them into her open closet. I laughed and shook my head. She knew how hard of a time I had sleeping so me being awake really wasn’t a surprise for her. “I’m going to take a quick shower and head to bed. I have so much to tell you but I’m going to wait until our hike so we have plenty to gossip about.”
“Oh! Are we still on for that? It is already past 2 am. I didn’t think you would be too keen on waking up in 3 hours.”
“We are definitely still on but go to bed because if we start talking then there is no way I will have the energy.”
“Deal! I’m going to bed. I have so much to tell you too.”
She headed to the shower and once she shut the door I turned off the lamp. I pulled out my phone and checked that my alarm was still set for 5am. I got back under the covers and was asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
