CHAPTER 15-TO THE STREETS

1217 Words
A month later...... Gill never attended work after the circumstance. He stayed in his room and sobbed most of the time. Occasionally, he did visit a few friends of his. "I can't believe I got sacked", Gill frustratingly emphasised. "What would have happened, how would I have got sacked. It is all because of Lisa. I will get my revenge", Gill continued. Gill restricted communication with Laurel for a long period of time and finally, Laurel got worried about the situation. She thought of travelling for three days but restricted that thought knowing that a huge sum of money would be involved. "Oh, boy. Guy, de don sack me", Gill told one of his old colleagues. "I know. I am in the same company with you. The CEO told us that you got arrested and in a nut shell, needed to be sacked", the colleague emphasised. Gill remained speech less for some time before the thought ot speaking up came flowing through. "It is my fault that I fell into that temptation. I could not keep my greedy hands to myself and look where it got me", Gill sorrowfully said. "Do not be sad. If you did not fall into the temptation you would have never gone back to meet Laurel, the love of your life", the colleague consoled. "Certain and secure", Gill said as he left the room wearing a black suit, an inner white top and a pair of dark grey trousers. Meanwhile, the colleague was left staring blankly at the table. One month later...... It took another month for Gill to sum up courage to tell Laurel the situation. He entered into the room of Sandra and ordered Sandra to leave. "I have something important to say to mom", Gill exclaimed as Sandra walked away in her light pink gown. "So why have you not been providing me with my monthly cut", Laurel rudely interrupted when Sandra had left the room. Gill stared around the room speechless as if he was trying to avoid the question. "The answer is upon us", Gill said when he had finally spoke up. Laurel stopped her intentions and waited to see Gill's intentions. "I have been terminated from my work", Gill exclaimed. Laurel smerked and said, "Stop speaking big grammar for me. Speak the truth and not all your lies". "I am not lieing. I got sacked", Gill retorted again. Laurel was left in shock not knowing what to do or say. All her questions had been answered to her in a flash. She quickly let off some steam before calming down. "So what do we do now", she questioned without even initially asking on how he got sacked. "Well for your information. I got sacked for being arrested. The job does not take wanted for applicants", Gill then explained. "And what we do now is return back to the streets and beg for money to see what to eat and what to drink", Gill continued. "I can't return to the streets. Not after my life advancing into such a state. No, no, no", Laurel shouted for a third time. "We don't have a choice. If we don't go, we might possibly die of hunger", Gill emphasised. Laurel got tired of hunger so she agreed to the idea; but she first decided to go around asking people for if they had any spare change she could use. "That seems like a bad idea", Gill stated. "What do you mean", Laurel abrubtely said. "You mentioned that the people here are crooks that aim to steal your money", Gill then informed her. Laurel wasn't fased by the current discovery. She still had faith in God that they could pass through the situation unharmed. Gill agreed as support of a husband and they went on to see as much money as they could gather. Two weeks later...... It took two weeks before Gill finally decided to start a conversation. "So, how much have you gathered", Gill curiously stated. Laurel was speechless, mainly by the sudden surprise of the question asked. Gill then repeated the question and this time it was said with more eagerness. "Only about 5000 naira. How about you", Laurel said as she tried to bring the question back to Gill. Gill knoted his tie and dragged his shirt upwards indicating that he was about to speak. He then cleared his throat and said, "I made a total of 20,000 naira", Gill retorted with a smerk. Laurel was shocked to hear that news. 'That could last us for a whole month', she thought as she raised her eyebrows indicating she was lost in thought. "Where did you get the money from", Laurel queried. "Oh, some friends gave me to help me sore through these hard times", Gill answered truthfully. Laurel took a final deep breath as she left the room. Gill stared blankly at the door for a few minutes and thought of the situation he would have possibly brought upon his family. One week later..... It took a week before they finally decided to tell Sandra the news. "We are broke and are destined to go back to the streets in about a month time", Laurel immediately uttered to her only adopted daughter. Sandra didn't seem fased. She had experienced such a situation before and on the plus side, she had no friends that she could get embarrassed of. She nodded her head casually while she dragged her tight Jean skirt along with her. "So how did she take it", Gill questioned. Laurel shrugged indicating a sign of 'I don't know' as she walked past Gill without saying a word. Meanwhile, Lisa met the man of her dreams. His name is Leo. He had exactly the same attributes of Lisa that some may say that the only difference between them was that they were of different genders. He was kind, wrinkly, hot-tempered and also averagelly tall. He could be described as about his early fifties and he is also the only surviving child of his mother. He dislikes noise and rudeness despite him being also rude. He also has black hair and a dark complexion. The two dated for a while before it was finally decided that they would marry. They did the traditional marriage accompanied by the church and court marriage where they filed all necessary papers. Although they were of different traditions, they still made the most beautiful of couples. 'Lesa' was their marriage name. They were married for about two years before they finally got their fist child. Meanwhile, Gill and Laurel had been begging for money for quite some time before the matter came in a room quarell. "We are going back to the streets. We have no other choice", Gill instructed. "Pls, just give me more time to gather more money", Laurel pleaded. "No more time. It is done. We will leave to the streets in about a month time", and with a sound of sincerity, Gill left the room. It was later discussed and agreed about the matter of returning to the streets. It took a while but there was no other way to escape the oppression. The life ahead of the poverty stricken family kept getting a farther distance to understand as well as it was yet to be determined.
