The inside of the van was suffocating. Ava's breath was ragged as she struggled against the zip ties binding her wrists. The hood over her head blocked out the light, and every sharp turn the van took only made her panic worse. She couldn't believe this was happening. One moment, she was determined to bring Raj down, and now she was being abducted, likely by the very people she was trying to expose.
Sophie had screamed. Ava prayed she had managed to escape. The last thing Ava wanted was for her best friend to get caught up in this nightmare.
Suddenly, the van screeched to a halt, throwing Ava forward against the cold metal floor. She grunted in pain but quickly tried to steady herself. The doors opened, and rough hands grabbed her, dragging her out onto what felt like gravel. The air outside was cool, and she could hear the distant sound of waves crashing against rocks. Where was she?
Ava was pushed forward, stumbling as her feet met uneven ground. They were moving fast, the sound of footsteps around her growing louder. After what felt like an eternity, they stopped. The hood was yanked off, and the sudden brightness stung her eyes.
Blinking, Ava looked around. She was in some kind of abandoned warehouse by the water, dimly lit by flickering overhead lights. The smell of saltwater and rust filled the air. Standing in front of her was a man she didn’t recognize—a tall, broad figure with cold eyes and an air of authority. He gave a twisted smile as he stepped toward her.
“Ava Patel,” he said slowly, savoring her name. “You’ve been quite a nuisance, haven’t you?”
Ava glared at him, refusing to show fear. “Who are you? What do you want?”
The man chuckled, his voice dark and mocking. “That’s not important right now. What matters is that you’ve been poking your nose where it doesn’t belong.”
Ava’s stomach churned. Raj must have sent him. She kept her voice steady, though her heart was pounding. “If Raj thinks he can scare me into submission, he’s wrong. I’m not going to back down.”
The man’s smile faded, his expression turning hard. “Raj? You think this is all about him?”
Ava frowned, confusion washing over her. “Isn’t it?”
The man leaned in closer, his breath hot against her ear. “Raj is a small piece in a much bigger game, Miss Patel. You’ve stumbled into something far more dangerous than you realize.”
Before Ava could process his words, the warehouse door burst open with a deafening crash. Her captor straightened, his hand reaching for a gun at his waist. Two men, dressed in black tactical gear, stormed in, their faces concealed by masks.
Shots rang out, and chaos erupted. Ava dropped to the floor instinctively, her heart racing. The man who had threatened her was exchanging gunfire with the new intruders, the sound of bullets deafening in the enclosed space. Sparks flew as bullets ricocheted off metal beams, and Ava crawled behind a stack of crates for cover.
Her mind was racing. Who were these new attackers? And why did they seem to be rescuing her?
Just as she was about to make a break for the exit, someone grabbed her arm—gently this time. She gasped, turning to find Karan standing over her, his face grim but determined.
“Karan?” she breathed, unable to believe he was here.
He quickly cut through the zip ties on her wrists, pulling her to her feet. “We have to go. Now.”
Ava didn’t argue. She followed Karan as he led her toward a side door, ducking behind crates as bullets continued to fly. The warehouse was a warzone, and the air was thick with gunfire and the sound of heavy boots thudding against the floor.
As they reached the door, Karan pushed it open, revealing a sleek black car waiting outside, engine running. He practically shoved her into the passenger seat before jumping in himself and slamming the door shut.
The car sped off, tires screeching against the gravel.
Ava’s heart was still racing as she turned to Karan, her mind spinning with questions. “How did you find me? What’s going on?”
Karan kept his eyes on the road, his knuckles white as he gripped the steering wheel. “I’ve been tracking you since last night. I knew my father would try something, but this...this is worse than I thought.”
“Who were those men?” Ava asked, her voice shaky. “The ones who kidn*pped me, and the ones who rescued me?”
Karan’s jaw tightened. “The men who took you work for someone my father has been dealing with for years. Raj has powerful allies—dangerous ones. I think they’re tied to some sort of underground syndicate, but I’m still piecing it together.”
Ava felt a chill run down her spine. “And the ones who helped us?”
Karan glanced at her, his eyes filled with regret. “I hired them. Private security. After I found out what my father was planning, I knew I had to protect you.”
Ava swallowed hard. “So, this is all because of Raj?”
Karan hesitated for a moment before shaking his head. “No. It’s bigger than him. He’s involved, yes, but there are others pulling the strings. People more powerful than I realized.”
Ava sat back, her mind reeling. She had thought exposing Raj’s manipulation would be the hardest part of this fight, but now it seemed she was caught in something much darker and more dangerous than a simple corporate power struggle.
They drove in silence for a few minutes before Karan pulled into an underground parking garage beneath a nondescript building. He parked the car and turned to Ava.
“We’re safe here, for now,” he said quietly. “But we need to figure out our next move. Whatever Raj is involved in, it’s going to get worse. And I can’t protect you from all of it.”
Ava stared at him, her emotions a whirlwind. She didn’t know whether to be angry or relieved that Karan had shown up. Part of her wanted to lash out—after all, he was still part of the family that had orchestrated her downfall—but another part of her was grateful he had saved her life.
“I don’t know who to trust anymore,” she admitted, her voice trembling. “You, your father...I feel like I’m just a pawn in this game.”
Karan’s expression softened, his hand reaching out to gently touch her arm. “I understand why you feel that way. But I promise you, Ava, I’m on your side. I want to take my father down as much as you do. Maybe even more.”
Ava met his gaze, searching for any hint of deceit. But all she saw was sincerity—and a deep sadness that mirrored her own.
Before she could respond, Karan’s phone buzzed. He glanced at it, his face paling as he read the message.
“We need to go,” he said urgently. “Now.”
Ava’s heart skipped a beat. “What is it?”
Karan looked at her, his eyes filled with a mix of fear and determination. “It’s Raj. He knows where we are.”
